Lesson Title: Technology and Reasoning. ACE Technology Uses Advantages of technology Possible Problems/Challenges 1. Using Fundamental Identities Introduction, Using the Fundamental Identities. Explain Everything AppTeacher uses the app to present new vocabulary and key terms to the students. The beginning of a trig unit involves multiple terms and identities that can easily be shared with this whiteboard app. YouTube-video clip is used to give C-Content Explain Everything will be used to present the lecture to the students. The teacher will be walking around the classroom with the iPad introducing the vocabulary without having to be tied to the whiteboard. YouTube will be used to show a short clip on the Explain Everything allows the teacher to be mobile in the room, increasing classroom management. The teacher can also hand off the iPad to any student in the room and have them complete a problem from their seat for the whole room to see. The app can also record the In order for both of theses apps to be effective there must be a strong internet connection. In addition the use of YouTube raises the risk of inappropriate ads and other material being given to the students throughout the use of the app. The Explain Everything app has a harder interface that requires the teacher to be familiar with the app. When handing the app Kimi Van Spronsen Honors Math Analysis
students a real life application of trigonometric identities to help answer the why we learn this question. uses of trigonometric identities to predict whether patterns in Boulder, Colorado. lesson, which can then be emailed or posted on the web for students who were absent or who need extra review. YouTube allows the teacher to draw and implement outside resources and to engage the students through short videos. Seeing math in action is a powerful tool for students and a great motivator as to why it is needed in the world. to students to use they may be confused on how to utilize all of its features to complete the problem. These challenges can be resolved by having the teacher take time to ensure they are familiar with Explain Everything and can give students a short tutorial at the beginning of class with key directions and actions that can be accomplished through the app. In addition the YouTube videos can be prescreened to locate any material that would be inappropriate for the classroom audience.
2. Verifying Trigonometric Identities Trig Wizard AppProvides students with a visual aid in developing their understanding of trigonometric C-Content E-Expression Trig Wizard will be used to give students a visual representation of the trigonometric functions throughout the Poplet allows students to organize their ideas and easily rearrange the identities that are connected with A possible challenge with Poplet is the amount of time that is needed to create such a word map. Another problem is that only one or two students can Kimi Van Spronsen Honors Math Analysis
identities Poplet App This app is appropriate for this lesson because of the large number of identities that exist. This app will help students organize the information into categories and sub categories. unit circle. The app can also be used to evaluate different trig values and identities, through the use of triangles and the unit circle. Poplet will be used by the teacher to help lead the class in creating a word map liking all of the trigonometric identities together into different categories. Students will help arrange and rearrange the identities to assist in noticing patterns and key uses of each identity. one another. There is no need to erase and the creation of the poplet web helps students recognize and make connections for themselves. Trig Wizard provides students with a simultaneous viewing of the trig functions along with the progression around the unit circle. Being able to see both movements increases understanding and provides a live time example that could not be accomplished on a white board. assist the teacher at a time with the production of the word web, which in turn leaves the rest of the class as idle participants. Trig Wizard has a tendency to crash if used for long periods of times and requires a strong wireless internet connection. A counter to the problem with poplet is to engage the rest of the class as the contributors to the poplet while the student holding the iPad is the secretary. In this manner the students are all participating in the flow of information. The wireless connection should be checked before hand to ensure its stability before the lesson. 3. Solving Trigonometric Equations Animator Free AppAllows students to express and create a step by step procedure and process through a flip book for the steps needed to solve trigonometric equations. Educreations AppProvides the teacher with a portable whiteboard that projects to the entire class. This app is appropriate for the content delivery because it allows the teacher to be active in the classroom while still proceeding with direct instruction. E-expression C-Content Educreations will be used to present the lecture to the students. The teacher will be walking around the classroom with the iPad introducing the new information without having to be tied to the whiteboard. Animator Free will be used to create a flipbook of the process of solving a trigonometric equation. This app will be used in a station set up. Students will work in small groups and rotate through creating a flipbook of different problems. All of Animator Free allows the students to determine each step in the process and then see the visual progression of the solution as the flipbook proceeds through each step. Educreations allows the teacher to be mobile in the room, increasing classroom management. The teacher can also hand off the iPad to any student in the room and have them complete a problem from their seat for the whole room to see. The app can also record the lesson, which can then be emailed or posted on the web Educreations has a 30- minute recording limit on the lecture series. It is also limited in the ways in which the recorded session can be shared. The only options for sharing is by sharing a link or emailing the file. Animator free can only handle a certain number of pages and can be slow to respond. In order to fully use this app a better option would be to upgrade to the full app for $1.99. To better use the Educreations app the teacher can pre-write much of the material on the different pages of the app. This will decrease the amount of recording time needed to write out different problems and definitions and allow the lesson to be recorded in a 30-minute time frame. the problems will then be shared with the class and discussed. for students who were absent or who need extra review. 4. Sum and Difference Formulas Socratic-The use of this app provides the teacher with an instant assessment and gauge of the understanding of the students. Students are able to quickly respond and be corrected instantly on any errors they make. A-Assessment Socratic will be used to give a mid- unit quiz to check for levels of understanding. The automatically generated data can allow the teacher to formulate a plan to remediate and strengthen areas of weakness in the learning goals. This technology provides the teacher with instant data results on student responses. The data is complied into a table, which can be emailed to the teacher for further assessment. In addition assessments are automatically graded providing students with immediate feedback as to their performance. A possible challenge of using Socratic as an assessment tool is that it is limited to multiple choice and True/False type questions. Students are unable to show any work or process, an important part of math, and can also not type any free responses. This app also requires each student to have a response device in the form of an app or e- clicker device. To counter these problems the teacher can create SAT type practice questions related to the content or pull sample questions from previous SATs. This allows the students Kimi Van Spronsen Honors Math Analysis
to use the Socratic app without any free responses and also helps them prepare for the SAT environment of multiple-choice math. 5. Multiple Angles and Product Sum Formulas Skitch App This app allows the students or teacher to annotate directly on top of a diagram. An equation can be uploaded as a pic file into Skitch and a student can then write and edit the photo and save the changes. Stick Pick App This app is a classroom management tool that is a can of virtual popsicle sticks with the students names on them. The teacher can randomly C-Content A -Assessment Stick Pick will be used to randomly select students throughout the class to work on the iPad and annotate the different equation. It will also be used to randomly pick students to assess their understanding of previous material with a verbal check at the beginning of the class. Skitch will be used to annotate and share the multiple formulas associated with this lessons study. Skitch allows the students to be active participants in the creation of the multiple and product sum angle formulas. As each formula is discussed and annotated they can be saved into a larger file that can then be shared with the class via email or an LMS. The advantage of using Stick Pick is it help track the number of times each student has participated and also is large enough for all The capabilities of the Skitch are limited and it is difficult to upload mathematics equations into the app without transferring them as picture files. In addition the constant switching between apps involved to use Skitch and Stick Pick simultaneously may be distracting and time consuming for the students. Using the iPad shortcut of swiping with four fingers from side to side will help eliminate the time between Skitch activities and keep the students involved and on task. choose names and track how many times each student has answered a question or created a Skitch diagram. It is also a great way to do an informal assessment of the students by asking questions and randomly asking students for the answers. A student will be in charge of showing the differences in the equation and writing any key information on the diagram as the class lecture proceeds. This information is displayed on the projector screen for the entire class and then saved and distributed to the class at the end of the lesson. students to be able to see the sticks being drawn when the app is projected on the screen.
