program of study.

Fourth Rule Find a mentor that holds a PhD.
Selecting a Site
My name is Carrie Jacobs and I am currently working as a high school Assistant
Principal. This semester will conclude my second internship.

Since I had experience working as a teacher at the middle school level, I thought why
not intern at an elementary school. My supervisor/mentor held a PhD from UNC and
was wonderful to learn under. She taught be everything from scheduling, reading the
data, planning workshops, auditing the finances, etc. She was resourceful and
someone that I would consider as a friend. In essence, principal roles at an
elementary level are similar to high school but the responsibilities are definitely
smaller in volume.

This semester I decided to intern at a local university and received my training from
the University Dean. I have been on the work site for three weeks and what an
outstanding boss. He is sharp, forthcoming and wants to add me as a full time faculty
member.

In summary, this is your internship so make it work for you, build positive
relationships and network!
