Program
Meet Live Birds of Prey
The Upper Marlboro branch (PGCMLS) in partnership with Watkins Nature Center will
introduce you to several live hawks, owls or vultures. Participants will: 1) classify animals
according to their diet, 2) describe the interdependence of living things within an ecosystem,
and 3) describe the behavioral and physical adaptations of birds. Ages 6 -adult.

How the program fits into the librarys mission
Prince George's County Memorial Library System provides materials and information for
study and personal enrichment. One of the Goals of PGCMLS is to anticipate and respond
to the evolving needs of the community. One way we do that is by supplementing the
learning needs of our customers with programs that are enriching, engaging, and
illuminating.

Need for the program
In order to raise awareness for our summer reading program, each branch is hosting three
special STEM related programs. This program supports that initiative. Observing animals
firsthand can spark a students interest in science as well as a general respect for life while
reinforcing key science concepts according to the National Science Teachers Association.
We are very excited to be including live animals in this program. In addition, we are very
eager to build a relationship with Watkins Nature Center, a new community partner for our
local branch.

(Visit http://www.nsta.org/about/positions/animals.aspx for more information).
