PREFACE
This ‘Case Study’ in the form of a booklet, has been prepared and designed as a
practical and creative work in partial fulfillment of the requirements for the practical
subject ‘Student Teaching’, suggested by T.U. to the students of B Ed third year. It is
a provision that the students having passed their respective method subjects are sent
for practice teaching to different schools and in the same race, the student teachers
selecting a student as the case, have to observe and study various aspects of him/her
and carry out a minute study called CASE STUDY. In course of my own off campus
teaching (Practice Teaching) at Bright Future English School, I have selected Miss
Anita Pandey, a talented and quick-witted student studying in Grade 10, for the same
purpose.

Bearing it as a precursor of a premier personality, I have tried my best to accomplish

this very task of case study leaving no stone unturned, and I do hope it works
wonders. This booklet, to cut it short, consists of eight units dealing with different
topics in depth, viz. introduction to the study, significance of the study, statement of
the problem, objectives of the study, delimitations of the study, methodology of the
study, interpretation and analysis of the data, and conclusion and suggestions,
respectively.

For the preparation of it, I received immensely infallible support, information and
suggestions from a good many dominant figures. For this I am grateful to my subject
Miss Anita Pandey, the Pandeys, the students and all the teaching staff of Bright
Future English School who actually provided me with invaluable information by
answering my probing questions, without them I couldn’t claim it to be of first waters.
I am really indebted to all my Gurus and Gurumas who inculcated the priceless
knowledge in me at different levels of study.

My parents and other family members are also the figures to deserve my immense
thanks for their constant encouragement and financial support for my study. Finally
yet importantly, I am to owe my special thanks to Mr. Pushpa Budhathoki, Mr.
Subash Bhattarai, and Mr. Tanka Dhakal, the teachers of Rastranirman Secondary
English School, Itahara, Morang who helped me computerizing this work for its better
outlook.

Thanks!

Unit – 1

Background of the Study / Introduction to the Study

As the students of B. Ed. Third year having passed their respective method subjects
are sent to different sponsoring schools for practice teaching, I am, one of them,
engaged at Bright Future English School, situated at Salakpur, Mrigaulia – 9, morang.
As suggested by T.U., we have to carry out a minute observation and study of a
student (selecting any one from the most intelligent, outstanding, quarrelsome,
indisciplined, addicted, single-minded etc.) and I have chosen Miss Anita Pandey as
the most quick-witted student who is studying in grade ten, for the same purpose.

Miss Anita Pandey, born on 13th Aswin, 2046 is an inhabitant of Indrapur – 8

(Budhabare), Morang and lives in a five roomed house with her parents, two sisters
(Mamata[elder] and Babita [younger]), and a younger brother (Bhabin). Her sister
Mamata is studying in B.A. first year at Janata Multiple Campus, Itahari and Babita
and Bhabin studying in grade nine and five, respectively are the students of the same
school as she is.

I selected Anita for this study with some rhymes and reasons. She is indeed a self-
disciplined, honest, cooperative, and intelligent and has a strong potential to be a real
somebody in future. Above all, the main reason for this choice is that she is the most
talented student of her class who never leads others down the garden path. She treats
all equally as brothers and sisters in a good manner. She seems to know what’s what.
She is a bright eyed and bushy tailed person who is not only talented in reading and
writing but also active enough in several different extra-curricular activities. She has
bagged a great many prizes securing the first and uppermost positions in the field of
study and social works like Child Health Care, Maternal Health Care, Human
Reproduction, (as a trainee and trainer both), village sanitation and so on and so forth.
She, however, frankly says that she doesn’t take much care of her own health and
doesn’t take her meal in time. She makes a clean breast of it that she is a bit arrogant.
Notwithstanding, she is quite A-1 in her study. She suggests her backward friends not
to let the grass grow under their feet.

She expects to pass the upcoming S.L.C. examination with flying colours, i.e. with
distinction. She aims to be a good person and prove herself to be in first waters.

Here, conducting many researches, I have tried my best to do this case study of a
bright student of Bright Future, Miss Anita Pandey. The Xerox copy of the marks

sheet of class nine exam has also been attached herewith as a proof to prove her as a
talented student.

PROGRESS REPORT

Unit – 2

Significance of the Study

This study, if I am out of woods, I must confess, cannot be a complete case study. In
want of time, I couldn’t carry out a minute and thorough study to get ample details.
Yet, I have to boil down the information I had as tersely as possible for the lack of
space. I however, have tried to put all the information in logical sequence.

Any assignment, what we people do, must have some importance without which our
all efforts will go to dogs. Therefore, I do not let this study end in smoke. Some of
the points of importance of this study are mentioned below.

™ It facilitates in the study and observation of other students like her

™ It provides the researcher with feedback for his/her betterment in the days to
come

™ It serves as a mirror to the students past and present and a preview of later
development

™ It suggests and provides her with necessary guidelines for her better future

™ It pin-points the strengths and weaknesses of the student and reinforces for
further improvement

Unit – 3

Statement of the problem

After having passed their respective method subjects, the student teachers like me are
sent to different sponsoring schools for practice teaching. There they have to select a
student amidst the most quarrelsome, school bunking, dull, bright and so on who are
of special case. In the same course, I have chosen a bright star of bright future, Miss
Anita Pandey, who is brilliant with capital B.

We have to take the students and their behavior, nature, activities, mental state etc. as
problem. But in my case, the problem itself seems to be a grand solution. Not to
mention her academic qualities, she has already presented herself as a good,
disciplined, co-operative, honest, sincere, and open minded lass in the society, her
name also comes out from the mouths of babes and sucklings in her village and at
school.

My intention here is not just highlight her but to sort out what’s what and prove that’s
flat. As the saying goes ‘Accidents may happen’, she might have many ups and downs
while growing youngster. But she seems to have known to ‘quitters never win,
winners never quit.’

I am preparing this case study to conclude the reasons for her intellect and plough her
every detail up. Before some months as I have been observing her, being her teacher
for about two years, there was bad blood between her and her two friends. But now
she takes them to be her best friends. She kept herself to herself for some months.
Recently they have joined up as thick as thieves. Really the teachers were taken aback
by their relationship. From my observation, at the whim of their anger they might
have broken the friendship and when they understood ‘two wrongs do not make a
right’ and ‘to have an hour counsel of a friend is better than a whole day’s meditation’
they buried the hatchet.

Now she is going hand in hand with her friends promising she’ll never burn her
bridge.

Being as bright as button, when she finds anybody, esp. her seniors, committing a
mistake she laughs in her sleeve.

Unit – Four

Objectives of the Study

Without any objectives, the study will be a wild goose chase. So this study has been
prepared with some reasonable objectives. The writer, reporter, or researcher may go
astray if he/she doesn’t have some specific objective in mind. I also have carried out
this study to meet the following objectives.

• To find out her family background

• To find out why she has become quick-witted

• To find out her behavior with her friends

• To find out her minor faults and weaknesses and to suggest her for betterment

• To reinforce and encourage her to expose fully and do yeoman’s service in

future

Unit – Five

Delimitation of the Study

A researcher must consider the time, labor and expense to the most while carrying out
it. So there should be a demarcation line for the area of study in the aforementioned
criteria. Mainly for the lack of time only a few of the students of her class are
involved in the interview.

Face to face talk to her parents was quite tougher for me as they were too busy in their
business. Whenever I go to visit and talk to them, they are away from home. So what
information I got about her family background and environment was just from her and
her sister and a brother who are at the same school.

The conclusion of the study has been drawn with the utmost help from the class
teacher and the school principal.

Unit – Six

Methodology of the Study

While doing research, we have to take the means of finding the sources of data or
collecting them. In order to do that I have applied the following methodology as tools.

• Direct observation

• Interview

• Questionnaire

• Face to face talk with her friends/brother/sister

• Inquiring school teachers about her

A brief questionnaire along with her response in her own handwriting is attached
herewith.

Unit – Seven

Analysis and Interpretation of Data

™ Family and Educational Background

In her words she is from an average family which is able to fulfill hand to mouth
problem. Born on 13th Aswin, 2046 in a rural village of Bhojpur she had to migrate to
Morang after 4 years as the Pandey family like the other families in search of better
life shifted to Terai.

The Pandey family consists of 5 memebers. Her father, Mr. Pandey has got
intermediate degree in Commerce and is thoroughly at home with business. He has
run a poultry firm. So the main source of income of this family is business. Her
mother, Mrs. Indrakala Pandey, a literate but uneducated middle aged woman is a real
mother who provides her offspring with motherly care and wants to see them at the
top of the tree in any good profession in future. As she is the second daughter
(MAHILI CHHORI), nick name-KALI, her elder sister, Mamata is doing her
Bachelor degree in Arts [B.A] at Janata Multiple Campus, Itahari. Her younger sister
(KANCHHI) is a ninth grader and the brother she has, Bhabin is a fifth standard lad at
the same school.

Anita started her schooling from Janata Lower Secondary School, Budhabare (500
meters walk from her home) where she studied up to class three and she moved to
Bright Future English School in search of quality education and to quench her thirst of
learning English. She says with pride she never ever stood the second but first since
the time of toughing the back board jungle.

She doesn’t like to tell a lie, hurt others’ feelings, is quite helpful and co-operative,
sincere, honest and very much curious to learn newer things. She lets the cat out of the
bag that she is a bit touchy and arrogant lassie. To this stand point she sees eye to eye
with her friends.

Regarding her study, she is going on advancing it. She frankly tells me that nepali and
Social Studies are her problematic subjects because she doesn’t get much help in
these subjects as in Maths, Science, English and Account from her family. She further
adds that her own negligence towards them can be the hidden reasons behind them.

Let’s screw it. She is living in a five roomed single storeyed concrete house saving the
joys and sorrows with each family member. Her family has owned 0-16-10 area of
land. She dislikes the materialistic thinking of becoming economically strong. She

says that she lives by a handsome remark ‘Money is something but not everything.
We are rich in honesty, love and character.’

This nature loving girl seems to keep herself to herself. But when one comes close to
her, s/he finds her open and frank. She always keeps an open mind on the suggestions
from seniors. She has the interests of reading G.K. books, listening to music, having
heart to heart with learned people, and enjoying the scenic beauty.

She has proved to be a top-dog bagging a good many prizes in different competitions
held in the school premises and out of the school. To mention just a few, she held the
first position in District Level Speech Programme – 2059 held in Biratnagar; fourth
position in National Quiz Programme -2060 held in Bhadrapur.

She never forgets the moment of exaltation when she secured the First position in
District Level Speech Programme on the topic ‘Importance of Reproductive Health
Education to the Women’. She also can never forget the mournful mishap when she
missed her maternal uncle, Prakash Thapa in a bomb blast in 2060 in Kathmandu.

Regarding the aim in life she says ‘I want to be a good person but not a great one
because I think being good itself is great.’ I do really appreciate her pregnant remark.
She is known to it that it is not easy enough, it’s like craking a hard nut. She is trying
her best to obtain it. ‘Studying hard, trying to form good habits, and nipping the bad
habits in the bud are the measures,’ as she says, ‘to be adopted to kiss the goal.’

Above all, she is all and all due her family’s support and inspiration as they always
give her examples of poor, but honest and good people’s lives.

™ Social Environment

Human beings being conscious and creative social animals want to make their lives
easier for survival. In accordance with the demands of contemporary society, they are
going on advancing their life style by dint of social progress.

The Pandey family is no exception to the truth ‘society moulds our lives even between
the devil and the deep blue sea’. The family has been fluctuated a lot. However, they
are doing all the best they can do to make the society still better.

The society where she has been brought up seems careless though the Pandeys are
playing their roles in the same swing. But they are quite conscious about providing
their offspring with good education. Having seen the progress of the Pandeys, the

society members are being more conscious. Now the whole society seems to be well
aware of importance of education, co-operation and mutual trust.

To cut a long story short, the society itself has forced her to step forward in the right
track. In her view, casting an evil eye over anything or anybody without anything
wrong with them is a harmful and sinful act.

She has involved herself in different social activities like village sanitation, providing
basic training to women related to infant and maternal health care etc. she suggests
her backward friends not to let the grass grow under their feet.

Anyway, the society has contributed a lot to bring her up to this stage.

™ Responsible Factors for being Talented

All the family, society and school environment are quite crucial to lead a person to the
right track or down the garden path.

The responsible factors behind her talent have been mentioned at times. Yet, I have
put some of those factors to the point in order to facilitate anyone to have a clear
understanding of such factors at a glance.

¾ Family is fully supportive in her study, i.e. she has been being guide by her
father (in account), elder sister (in other subjects) and she herself is very smart
and active in learning.

¾ She has a good mother who loves her like mad. Whose motherly care and
affection has added more energy in her study.

¾ School teachers’ continuous support, inspiration, and teachings.

¾ Co-operative and friendly behavior among classmates.

¾ Her own personal interest and labor in study.

¾ She wears her heart on her sleeve, so nobody wants her get into murky water

¾ She is brilliant, as it seemed, she has the inborn potential of talent, and
however, it is something to be developed.

Conclusion and suggestion

Conclusion

As it goes ‘the proof of the pudding is in the eating’, I have tried my best to prove that
Miss Pandey is not a Handy-Pandy-Jack-a- Dandy but a would be patriotic, pious and
useful citizen who can face life boldly and accept its challenges with courage,
conviction and wisdom.

Seemingly simple lass not niffy-naffy about her clothing doesn’t think she’s Miss
BIG. But the two sisters, Anita and Babita are much of a muchness – quick tempered.
Not with standing, she has a mother who is as much a friend to her as a mother, and
has the luck of getting such a sister Mamata, who are not so much sisters as friends.
Mamata and her mother are the true guardians in the real sense as her father is quite
busy in his business deal.

As she complains some teachers have just muddied the water by not providing
necessary guidelines for her study as she has to break the record of the school with A-
rated results.

She has love and respect for poor Jacks and Johns. She doesn’t keep mum if she
notices such people especially for female dominated; she will even be ready to dice
with death. She wants to utilize her knowledge and power in the nick of time.

There is no royal road to making oneself bright. It is too much of an intellectual

process. As far as it goes, she has stood herself in the front row. She is much the best
student to the backbone.

Suggestions

We shall be only too glad if Anita doesn’t become stuck up, considering the fact that
flying off the handle doesn’t get her anywhere. Many a man cares deeply about their
own life, so should she do thinking of her upcoming SLC.

Here I have a strong suggestion to the school teachers for her good (she sees eye to
eye with me at this point), ‘Education certainly is a failure when it is simply
cramming the girl’s head with a lot of disjointed facts powered into the heads as into
the empty basket, to be emptied out in the exam hall and the empty basket carried out
again in the world.’ So in this respect, we teachers should be aware enough to which
summit we leading them up.

She is industrious, yet there is space for being more diligent so that she won’t have to
laugh on the wrong side of the mouth after her ordeal. I do not mean that she should
always be on tender hooks about the exam.

If there’s one thing I loathe it’s people who are not true to their words. ‘Veracity
always pays,’ she says, ‘I have kept this proverb.’ She should never bust it up.

Her aim in life sounds good – ‘to be a good but not a great person because being good
itself is great’. She’d better start doing something in order to kiss her solo aim rather
than just talking about it.

Last but not least, how about dropping out the bad habits and picking up good habits?
She should remember for her betterment ‘a wise enemy is better than a crowd of
wicked friends’. We should also adopt the good qualities of the people who do not
like us, shouldn’t we?

Go on advancing your study. Do not care a damn about the thorns on your way
because you have to make headway. Be amiable, cheerful and sincere. To obtain
anything you like immediately is like getting blood out of a stone, so have patience;
everything will go alright.

I wish success in every walk of her life.

Thanks!
