Diarrhea is a health problem not only in developing countries but also in developed countries. In
Indonesia, acute diarrhea infection is still ranked about first to fourth major diseases among patients who
are hospitalized. Incidence rate of diarrhea in East Java is 20 out of 1000 inhabitants at all ages. In
Malang, incidence rate of diarrhea reaches 50 out of 1000 inhabitants at all ages. Preliminary study shows
that 64,70% oJ'surveyed children of 6 to 12 years old in dusun Watugel, desa Mulyoarjo, Kecamatan
Lawang, has suffered from diarrhea. Literatures show that washing hands with soap can reduce the
incidence rate of diarrhea by up to 50%. This can be caused by the anti bacterial effect of the soap which
may reduce the transmission of pathogen bacteria. Therefore the objection of this study is to find the
correlation between handwashing behaviour and the incidence rate of diarrhea in children aged 6 to 12
years old This study is analytic observasional study, using cross sectional method with two stage cluster
random sampling. Sample size is 91 respondents which qualifies the criteria of inclusion in dusun Watugel.
The independent variable in this study is hand-washing behaviour in children aged 6 to 12 years old, and
the dependent variable is incidence rate of diarrhea in children of 6 to 12 ' years old. The hypothesis is that
there is a correlation between hand-washing behaviour and the incidence rate of diarrhea in children aged
6 to 12 years old. The conclusion is that there is no correlation between hand-washing behaviour and the
incidence rate oJ'diarrhea in children aged 6 to 12 years old in dusun Watugel, desa Mulyoarjo,
Kecamatan Lawang, Kabupaten Malang.
