Students will be able to track and analyze the growth of their caterpillar.
Students will be able to identify the parts of a butterfly.
Students will be able to identify the resources caterpillars and butterflies need to survive.
Students will demonstrate an understanding of the process of metamorphosis.
Language Objectives:
Students will be read about butterflies.
Students will be write about their caterpillar and butterfly using descriptive language
(adjectives and details) in their daily calendar tracking the life cycle of the butterfly.
Students will be participate in the instructional lesson and classroom conversation(s).
Students will orally share their daily calendar to a partner/group.

Anticipatory Set:
Students have been introduced to insects and insect body parts/characteristics.
The teacher will explain to the class that they will be learning about caterpillars and
butterflies. The teacher will identify the lesson objectives.
The engaging minute an a half video of Five Little Butterflies should hook students
as they prepare to learn about what the characteristics of caterpillars and butterflies.
The teacher will review vocabulary.
The teacher will introduce new vocabulary words.


Lesson Sequence:
Sitting in a circle on the floor the teacher will read the From Caterpillar to Butterfly by
Deborah Heiligman while the class follows along with their own copy.
The teacher will present the new terms to the class (butterfly, caterpillar, egg,
metamorphosis).
Pass out the 10-day calendar to students.
o The teacher will explain to students they will draw their observations of their
caterpillar onto their calendar once each day.
Pass out plastic cups, leaves, and caterpillars to students.
o The teacher will model how to construct their butterfly habitat.
o Students will create their own butterfly habitat.
o Have students provide their caterpillar with water using the eyedropper.
The teacher will explain to the students that at the end of approximately 10 days the
caterpillars should metamorphosis into butterflies.
o Students will release their butterflies into nature.
The teacher will proved students with the Butterfly Assessment once their caterpillar is
released into nature.
