7.13 Guided Lesson Plan #13

How do you like to spend your free time?
Summary Description This lesson can be used in a Spanish class when we teach
the topic of Los Deportes y el Ocio (Sports & boredom). This lesson will show students
the amount of time they spend sitting & watching a screen. This will allow them to see
for themselves and realize that they need to reduce it.
Focus Question: How much time do students spend using technologies & what you
can do to reduce it.
Additional Questions:
1. What do students use technology for?
2. How much do peers influence the frequency of technology use?
3. How much time is too much time? What are other alternatives that create the same
result?
4. What are some of the effects of not enough activity?
Lesson Goals/Objectives:
To illustrate the amount of time students spend using technology every day and how it
affects them and recognize others alternatives.

Monkey survey: (can be completed in a computer or a smart device)

Activity Description:
1. Teacher creates a questionnaire on the students use of technology. Its broken down
in 3 sections: at school, at home and other places. Questions inquire about the amount
of time students spend using a computer/laptop, using a smartphone, tablet, mp3
player, talking on the phone or watching TV. Have questions that require students to be
specific about what they use it for, what they feel when they use it and who they use it
with. Have students turn in survey anonymously for best results.
2. Compile the information gathered by students and see where they use the technology
more, in school or home.
3. In a class discussion, ask students where they learned to use the technology. Do
they think about what they are doing when they are using the technology? When they
use the technology do they use it with respect to others?
4. What changes can they do to reduce the amount of time they use technology? What
are other activities that they can do in place of using technology?
5. 10 to 15 min in groups of 4 have students come up with the top three most used
technologies and come up with alternatives that not require the student to use
technology.
6. After groups have completed the activity have each group share their answers with
the whole class.

Lesson Extension Ideas/Activities:
Have students take the information gathered from the survey and the class discussion
and determine the kinds of alternatives they can use. Have students keep a one week
log of often they used the alternative.
Teaching Tips:
1. Ask students to think about their technology use. Have them discuss about how the
use of technology makes them feel.
2. Compare the results that are gathered in the classroom with national average (see
Resources). Are these students following the national trends?
3. Provide help to students to look beyond the basic uses of technology. Urge them to
think about all uses of technology (IM, blogging, MP3 players, etc.).
4. Reiterate that not all technology use is wrong (in and of itself) but how it is used and
how often.
