Everyone has dreams or say ideas, imaginations and even thoughts, but we dont always

recall what we dreamed about. Some dreams are fun or silly, while others can be scary. Most
people dream in color, but some have dreams in black and white or shades of brown! People do
many things in their dreams that they really could or would never do, like fly or ump off a
building, or swim and breathe under water.
!s "r. Seuss, from #he $ora% has said & Unless someone like you cares a whole awful
lot, Nothing is going to get better. It's not. ' $ikewise, ( also have a desire and that is of a
green school.
(f given a chance any kid would like to change their school into a dream school, where most
probably there would be no e%aminations, no pressure of studies from parents and relatives, all
school hours would be leisure hours and more. #he list is endless.
)e all have our own dreams about how to make our school better, and so ( do not mind
sharing my views about how ( would like to have my school changed. My dream is neither to
lower the burden of my studies nor to run away from e%amination but it is to save our world
from the future crisis ahead, that is none other than global warming, a common thorny issue.
#oday, global warming is not a small or locali*ed environmental problem+ it is going to re,uire
international co-operation as well as personal change from all of us to stop global warming. (n
fact, it may be the largest challenge humanity faces in the twenty-first century. .nfortunately, it
has also become a highly politici*ed issue.
So, instead of straight away taking a very large step, why cant we start from a primitive one/
)e spend at least 0 hours a day, 123 days a year, at school. 4oing to a safe, chemical free school
is as important as establishing a clean, to%in free home. 5elping our local school with their
efforts to go green is worth our time and our energy will set a wonderful e%ample for others.
!s said by - 6ustice 5ilario "avide, 7posa v 8actoran 91::;< &(t is not ust for the present, but
for the future, not ust for the people who walk this planet right now, but for the children and
their children to come =the day would not be too far when all else would be lost not only for the
present generation, but also for those to come ' generations which stand to inherit nothing but
parched earth incapable of sustaining life=>

#he present cannot be ignored in order to focus on the future. #he environment influences how
people live and how society develops. 8or this reason, people, progress, development and the
environment are closely linked. #he condition of our environment has become of paramount
concern not only to scientists and environmentalists but also to the maority of the populace of
contemporary society.
.nfortunately most of us take the view that being green is somebody else?s responsibility. #he
stark truth is that we all have to do our bit. #he responsibility for being green is shared among all
of us. why not ust do at least some really simple thing which can be very effective/ )hy not
teach students how to be sensitive to their environment/ (t makes so much sense to teach them
these important habits while they are young.
Children are not vessels to be filled, but lamps to be lit.
this words of Swami @hinmayananda itself indicate that students, being the ne%t generation
play an important role in the development of our world. (f only their potentials are ma%imi*ed by
providing them the opportunity to develop social responsibility and social entrepreneurship,
students can create positive change to the society, and even across borders.
Students learn best when they are engaged and inspired. (magine the learning potential when the
school building itself becomes an interactive teaching tool, educating the ne%t generation of
sustainable leaders towards the green earth.
Aeing environment-friendly, a green school gives rise to a big change in an ordinary school
life. Ay promoting the greening of all schools - new or e%isting - we can make a tremendous
impact on student health, test scores, teacher retention, school operational costs and (t will also
help us by creating ! healthy, productive learning environment.
)e can apply following suggestions including ways to get involved in helping our school go
green as well as we ourselves can try to become green students. )e can Start an eco-committee
of parents and interested teachers to organi*e and direct green activities and efforts at your
school ,students should be represented on the committee as well. )e must try to 8ind out if our
school has an environmental mission statement or Bplanet pledgeB - if they don?t, we must help
establish one. )e can @onduct or attend environmental survey or energy audit or Put on a show
to. Educate the rest of our school by putting on a play or presentation that goes over an
environmental topics like global warming, preserving ecosystems or recycling.. )e should
mostly work on 4reen art proects or organi*e discussion on 4reen topics.
)e can also individually play a role in this process by using recycled products like unbleached
recycled-paper notebooks, water-based paints, recycled pencils ,green tissues , !cid-free glue
stick ,Cechargeable batteries and biodegradable corn starch pens #hese would tend to be of good
,uality and will also encourage more businesses to produce re-cycled materials.. )e should
carry on various efforts to create a clean, safe indoor environment and clean air by using non-
to%ic cleaners and also to save energy by using BgreenB light bulbs, including compact
fluorescent light bulbs and Energy Star bulb in the classrooms and throughout the building. )e
waste enormous amounts of paper in our schools. )e can have recycling barrels ne%t to the
trash-can in every classroom of our school for sheets of waste paper in. )e must also encourage
students to use both sides of a sheet of paper. !lso Plan crafts, activities which use recycled
paper., )e can also conduct a recycle competition to see which class can save the most
newspapers, soda cans, water bottles or any other recyclable item. (f our school isnt willing to
start composting, we can create a mini compost pile outside your classroom to get rid of some of
our garbage, though its probably a smart idea to make sure its cleared with the administration
and fire codes. Each class must grow their own organic gardens by growing various types of
vegetables or flowers, and they must sample what they grow. 5ere they can also .se the
compost to fertili*e the class garden.
)e can also make simple efforts by making sure during the last few minutes of the day, that
whether all the water faucets are completely turned off, blinds are closed, lights are off and
windows are closed. !lso, (f the temperature is nice outside, regulate your inside temperature by
opening up the windows. )e can also conduct programs in which we can adopt a block of our
street or any other place we want to make a difference. 8resh air will also reuvenate everyone
including the students. (f you have leftover water from a cooking or science assignment, use it to
water your plants outside instead of throwing it down the drain. (n certain functions conducted in
school, we can keep a stash of biodegradable plates and utensils.
Eating habits can also play an important role in effecting our environment .for e%ample,
eating hamburgers and fries everyday is not only bad for us, but could be bad for the
environment also. Eating healthy and organic food can be better for us as well as the
environment. #his are the few ways to turn our school green.
7ur environment always teaches us to lead and healthy and cheerful life which will enable to
do our daily household chores and perform our duty at workplace in and elegant manner
without any amount of stress. 7ur very e%istence on the earth is due to resources supplied by
the environment. !s there is an endless supply by the environment our greed is also increasing
and our environment has become fragile and frail. (ts resources are soon going to be e%hausted
and mankind may perish. (t is high time that we students act what we think for our
environment. (n other words we should learn to use our natural resources udiciously. )e
should save these resources for our ne%t generations and successors. #o achieve this task every
school should start auditing the resources. Every classroom is a virtual environment. Every
students mind should be instilled with the fact that we ought to save our nature for that we
should all dream that our school be a green literate school. (n a green literate school each
individual should be green literate from a kindergarten child to the head of the school
administration. Aecause of the depletion of our natural resources, the destruction of our
ecosystems and biodiversity, and pollution are comple% problems that cannot be answered by a
single approach.
ManySmall changes in our lives can make a big difference. Ay encouraging children to think
about the earth they will know that they are playing their part to help the planet. !nd for this
green school is the only one medium as they can help turn back the clock on climate change,
improving the environmental outlook for the children who will one day be faced with the
challenge of finding resolutions to this problem.
So my dream is ust to see all schools become green literate across the world. !ll the students
and teachers who are green conscious and environment lovers and spread the slogan B go
greenBand practically initiate the green mission for safety of mankind and sustenance of the
environment for the future generation. . #o full fill the dream we need to involve in greening
up our schools so that they can go a long way in improving the environment and protecting
Earth?s precious natural habitats. #hen this would be a true green school e%perience as #he
ordinary school building would no longer be a vessel filled with students, teachers and books,
but itself an opportunity for e%periential learning and discovery.
5owever, ( strongly believe in my dream, ( know its difficult but not impossible. ( think if we
all work together for the sake of the earth this type of &"ream School,> can be accomplished.
