the case of angles in degrees, unless a different level of accuracy is specified in the
question.
You are expected to use a graphic calculator.
Unsupported answers from a graphic calculator are allowed unless a question
specifically states otherwise.
Where unsupported answers from a graphic calculator are not allowed in a question,
you are required to present the mathematical steps using mathematical notations and
not calculator commands.
You are reminded of the need for clear presentation in your answers.

At the end of the examination, fasten all your work securely together.
The number of marks is given in brackets [ ] at the end of each question or part question.

9 Every month, an Italian restaurant orders 180, 480 and 240 cans of tomatoes from
three different suppliers A, B and C respectively. The restaurant manager intends to
choose a sample 30 cans from the 900 cans ordered to test the quality of the tomatoes.
Describe how the sample can be chosen using stratified sampling.
Suggest one advantage of this sampling method. [3]

10 Three students independently select a number each from the set {1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7}.
Find the probability that
(i) all three numbers selected are greater than 4, [1]
(ii) the least number selected is 5, [3]
(iii) the three numbers selected are different given that the least number selected is
5. [3]

11 At a financial advice counter in a hospital, a counsellor provides financial advice to
help people handle high medical costs. On average, the counsellor receives 5 requests
to see him every hour. The duration of the counselling session for each individual
request (in minutes) is assumed to be normally distributed with mean 10 and standard
deviation 2. Each request is assumed to be independent of other requests and the
requests received are also assumed to occur singly.
(a) (i) Assuming a Poisson distribution, find the probability that 4 requests
were received in the first hour given that the counsellor received a total
of at most 5 requests in a 2-hour period. [3]
(ii) Explain why a Poisson distribution may not be a good model for the
number of requests received by the counsellor in a day. [2]
(b) Find the probability that the duration of a randomly chosen counselling
session for one individual request exceeds the total duration of the counselling
sessions for the next two individual requests. [3]

is a normal random variable with mean and variance

. Her waiting time for the
school bus (in minutes) is another independent normal random variable Y with mean
10 and variance 9.
(i) Given that P( 25) 0.1908 X < = and P( 45) 0.0521 X > = , find the values of
and , giving your answers correct to the nearest integer. [3]
(ii) Using the integer values of and found in (i), find P( 2 ) X Y > . [3]
(iii) Dorothy decides to record the journey times on the school bus for 50 randomly
selected days. Using a suitable approximation, find the probability that there
are at most 5 days where the journey times on the school bus took more than
45 minutes. [3]

13 A manufacturer of Quickie Cereal runs a promotion. Each packet of Quickie Cereal
contains either a red coupon or a gold coupon but not both. Four red coupons can be
exchanged for a toy while five gold coupons can be exchanged for a cash voucher. It
is known that 30% of the packets contain red coupons and the rest contain gold
coupons. J erry purchases 10 packets of Quickie Cereal.
State an assumption needed for a binomial distribution to be a suitable model for the
number of red coupons in J errys purchase. [1]
Using a binomial distribution, find the probability that J erry can exchange for
(i) at least 1 toy, [3]
(ii) exactly 1 toy and exactly 1 cash voucher. [2]
J ane buys 100 packets of Quickie Cereal. Use a suitable approximation to calculate
the probability that she can exchange more than 11 cash vouchers. [4]
