Paper 1 30 June 2011

3 hours

Additional Materials: Answer Papers
List of Formulae(MF15)

READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS FIRST

Write your name and class on every script you hand in.
Write in dark blue or black pen on both sides of the paper.
You may use a soft pencil for any diagram or graph.
Do not use staples, paper clips, highlighters, glue or correction fluid.

Answer all the questions.
Give non-exact numerical answers correct to 3 significant figures, or 1 decimal place in the case of angles in
degrees, unless a different level of accuracy is specified in the question.
You are expected to use a graphic calculator.
Unsupported answers from a graphic calculator are allowed unless a question specifically states otherwise.
Where unsupported answers from a graphic calculator are not allowed in a question, you are required to
present the mathematical steps using mathematical notations and not calculator commands.
You are reminded of the need for clear presentation in your answers.

At the end of the examination, fasten all your work securely together.
The number of marks is given in brackets [ ] at the end of each question or part question.

1 Five hundred tickets for a certain music concert were sold. The price guide for the adults, senior
citizens and children tickets are at $7.50, $3.50 and $4.00 respectively. The revenue for the Monday
performance was $3,025. Given that twice as many adult tickets were sold as children tickets, how
many of each category of tickets were sold? [4]

2 The rate at which a radioactive substance decays is proportional to its mass, x, at any point in time. At
the end of 50 days, it was found that the substance has a mass of 5.731 milligrams. Assuming that the
substance has a half-life of 16 days, express x in terms of time t, and deduce the initial mass of the
radioactive substance. [7]
(Half-life is the time taken for the mass of a substance to decrease by half of its initial amount.)

4 A job applicant is offered job employment in Bank A and Bank B. Both banks are willing to pay him
the same annual salary of $x for his first year of service. The remuneration package for subsequent
years from the two banks are as follows:
Bank A: An annual salary increment of 15% of his first years annual salary.
Bank B: An annual increment of 10 %.
(i) Show that his total salary after n years is $ 3 37

(ii) Find his total salary after n years if he chooses to work in Bank B. [3]
(iii) Hence determine the least number of years he should work so that he will earn more in Bank
B than in Bank A. [2]

State the equations of the asymptotes of C. [2]
It is known that C has a turning point. Find the coordinates of this point in terms of a and hence
sketch the curve C, indicating the coordinates of any axial intercept(s), turning point(s) and equations
of any asymptotes. [5]
By sketching a suitable graph on the same axes as C, determine the number of real roots of the

y t t = + .
(i) Sketch the graph of C for 2 2 t . [2]
(ii) The region bounded by the curve C and the x-axis is denoted by R. Express the area R as an
integral in t and evaluate the exact value of this integral. [6]
(iii) The region enclosed by C, the y-axis and the horizontal lines y =2 and y =12 is denoted by S.
Find the volume of solid generated when S is rotated through 2 radians about the x-axis,
giving your answer to the nearest integer. [3]
