Graph Paper

READ THESE INSTRUCTIONS FIRST

Write your name and class on every script you hand in.
Write in dark blue or black pen on both sides of the paper.
You may use a soft pencil for any diagram or graph.
Do not use staples, paper clips, highlighters, glue or correction fluid.

Answer all the questions.
Give non-exact numerical answers correct to 3 significant figures, or 1 decimal place in the case of angles in
degrees, unless a different level of accuracy is specified in the question.
You are expected to use a graphic calculator.
Unsupported answers from a graphic calculator are allowed unless a question specifically states otherwise.
Where unsupported answers from a graphic calculator are not allowed in a question, you are required to
present the mathematical steps using mathematical notations and not calculator commands.
You are reminded of the need for clear presentation in your answers.

At the end of the examination, fasten all your work securely together.
The number of marks is given in brackets [ ] at the end of each question or part question.

(a) The degree 4 polynomial ( ) P z has real coefficients. The equation
( ) P 0 z = has roots
1 i z = + and 2 z = .

(i) State the number of complex roots of
( ) P 0 z = , justifying your answer. [1]

(ii) By expressing
( ) P z as a product of linear factors, find the remaining roots of the
equation ( ) P 0 z = given that
( ) P i 10 10i = + . [6]

(b) Given that 1 3i w = , express w in the form e

Sketch the roots on an Argand diagram, showing clearly any relationship among them.
Deduce the greatest and the least values of z w , leaving your answer exact form. [2]

Section B [30 marks]

5 Three girls A, B and C, and five boys are to be in a row for a photo shoot. Find the number of ways
of arranging them if
(a) the girls are never next to each other, [3]
(b) B must lie between A and C, and A and B are separated by exactly 3 boys. [3]

Find
( ) P ' A B . [1]
With the help of a Venn diagram, and by finding expressions for
( ) P ' B A , find
( ) P A . [3]
Hence, justify whether
(i) A and B are independent. [1]
(ii) A and B are mutually exclusive. [1]

(ii) the most likely number of Singaporeans who suffer from stress in the sample, [1]
(iii) the probability that 25 Singaporeans in the sample who suffer from stress given that there are
