Graphics Scheme Plan

Title of Scheme:
Graphics: Poster design
Subject matter: A2 poster
design based on the theme;
Sustainability (Endangered
Species).
No. of Lessons: 10
Time: 10 hrs / 600 minutes
1xD
1xS
Group: 5
th
Years
No. of Pupils: 17
Aims:
Enable students to identify and describe the graphic design work created for the World
Wildlife Fund.
Encourage students to anaylse their work by comparing and contrasting it to work created in
the classroom.
Recognize and appreciate good graphic design which serves it purpose.
Design an A2 poster, containing an image and lettering.
Display a willingness and openness in their approach to the design brief.

Overall Learning Outcomes for the Scheme:
Students will be able to.

- Define and explain animal sustainability show the ability to research and discuss the topic in class
discussion.
- Demonstrate the ability to illustrate ideas in thumbnail sketches and preparatory work which will
translate into the finished design.
- Develop design skills by creating a poster carefully considering:
Type face, colour story, tone, target audience, message and layout.
- Discuss share ideas in peer to peer constructive critique of work.

Investigating/Exploring/Creating (include illustrations, especially your own work):
Students will be.
Investigating
I chose to look at animal sustainability ( endangered species). I chose this topic as I feel it is something that
interests me. The Black Rhino had become extinct the week before I begun this project, so it was a topical
subject to cover. The reason why the Black rhinos have become extinct, is due to poachers hunting them for
their horns. I wanted to create a book cover that would catch the viewers eye and make them think. I chose
an image of a rhino looking from the side he looks quite sad and defeated. I also chose black and white strips
in the background symbolizing he is in captivity. I illustrated my image and font, the focal part of my book over
is his large horn with a question mark underneath. I designed is it this way so it is also visually readable.

- Brain storming initial ideas on subject matter.
- Research topic and collect source imagery from the internet and the World Wild Fund website.
- Poster functionality in portraying a message.
-Colour and its importance in setting the tone of the message.
- Layout in thumbnail sketches.
Exploring

- Sketching idea using pen/pencil/markers.
- Font on word typing message in various sizes.
- Students will choose a font suitable to the message they want to portray and the overall design of
the poster.
- Experimenting with different materials and processes paper and collage.

Creating

-Above is a finished design of a book cover I created students will be taking the same issue and
creating a poster.
- A mood board containing design brief, brainstorming, thumbnails, ideas and colour story.
- Paper mochette of final design.
- A finalized design of a book cover sleeve measuring:
-The poster must contain a slogan.

Critical and Contextual studies: (include illustrations):

Posters
- Students will be shown a variety of posters which they will be encouraged to comment on.
- Encouraged to bring in posters from home that they like.
- This exercise is designed to get students thinking about design, what an effective design is and
what is outdated.

- Students will be shown images of posters from the WWF.
-These posters are very clever and fresh students will be comparing and contrasting these to other
poster designs.
-These will help broaden students awareness of how the subject could be approached.

Facts on Endangered species
1. An endangered species is one whose numbers are so small that it is at risk of extinction.
2. A species is declared extinct after many years of not being spotted. As it takes so long to define an
entire species extinct, it is probable that there are many species already gone that we are unaware
of.
3. A species is defined as endangered or threatened when it is compared against these four factors:
-Damage to or destruction of its habitat.
-Overuse of the species for educational, recreational, or entertainment purposes.
-Disease or predation of the species.
-Natural or manmade hazards to the continued life of the species.

Factors that threaten species
- Illegal wildlife trade: - Wildlife hunting is big business a recent 2013 estimate valued the illegal
poaching trade in Africa as being worth $17 billion dollars a year and
growing.
-Animal rights groups estimate that; poachers in Africa kill between 25,000
and 35,000 elephants annually meaning about 104 die a day.
-It is second only to habitat destruction in overall threats against species
survival.

-Deforestation: Some 46-58 million square miles of forest are lost each yearequivalent to
36 football fields every minute.

-Water Scarcity: Only 3% of the earths water is French water and the majority of that is
frozen in glaziers.

-Pollution: Quantities of waste and pollutants are dumped into this precious liquid every
day. Syringes, cigarette lighters and tooth brushes have been found in the
stomach of dead seabirds.

-Climate change: An overheating world is creating a big change in climatic conditions and this
can harm the delicate ecosystems in which species live. Threatened species
can already be found all over the world - see the examples below.

-Pirate fishing/Over fishing: More than 85 percent of the world's fisheries have been pushed to or
beyond their biological limits.
Pirate fishing accounts for an estimated 20% of the worlds catch and as
much as 50% in some fisheries.

- Oil and gas development: Drilling threatens eco-systems. Leakages have caused devastation to
wildlife.

ICT:
-Students will have access to computers in the room to gather research.
- Images and information on subject matter.
-I will be using the overhead projector for PowerPoint presentations.
