Edgar Allan Poe The Black Cat
From my infancy I was noted for the docility and humanity of my disposition. My
tenderness of heart was even so conspicuous as to make me the jest of my companions. I was
especially fond of animals, and was induled !y my parents with a reat variety of pets. "ith
these I spent most of my time, and never was so happy as when feedin and caressin them.
#his peculiarity of character rew with my rowth, and, in my manhood, I derived from it
one of my principal sources of pleasure. #o those who have cherished an affection for a
faithful and saacious do, I need hardly !e at the trou!le of e$plainin the nature or the
intensity of the ratification thus deriva!le. #here is somethin in the unselfish and self-
sacrificin love of a !rute, which oes directly to the heart of him who has had fre%uent
occasion to test the paltry friendship and ossamer fidelity of mere Man. I married early, and
was happy to find in my wife a disposition not unconenial with my own. &!servin my
partiality for domestic pets, she lost no opportunity of procurin those of the most areea!le
kind. "e had !irds, old-fish, a fine do, ra!!its, a small monkey, and a cat.
#his latter was a remarka!ly lare and !eautiful animal, entirely !lack, and saacious
to an astonishin deree. In speakin of his intellience, my wife, who at heart was not a little
tinctured with superstition, made fre%uent allusion to the ancient popular notion, which
rearded all !lack cats as witches in disuise. 'ot that she was ever serious upon this point -
and I mention the matter at all for no !etter reason than that it happens, just now, to !e
remem!ered. (luto - this was the cat)s name - was my favorite pet and playmate. I alone fed
him, and he attended me wherever I went a!out the house. It was even with difficulty that I
could prevent him from followin me throuh the streets.
&ur friendship lasted, in this manner, for several years, durin which my eneral
temperament and character - throuh the instrumentality of the Fiend Intemperance - had *I
!lush to confess it+ e$perienced a radical alteration for the worse. I rew, day !y day, more
moody, more irrita!le, more reardless of the feelins of others. I suffered myself to use
intemperate lanuae to my wife. ,t lenth, I even offered her personal violence. My pets, of
course, were made to feel the chane in my disposition. I not only nelected, !ut ill-used
them. For (luto, however, I still retained sufficient reard to restrain me from maltreatin
him, as I made no scruple of maltreatin the ra!!its, the monkey, or even the do, when !y
accident, or throuh affection, they came in my way. -ut my disease rew upon me - for what
disease is like ,lcohol. - and at lenth even (luto, who was now !ecomin old, and
conse%uently somewhat peevish - even (luto !ean to e$perience the effects of my ill temper.
Edgar Allan Poe Pisica Neagra
/e mic copil m-am deose!it de ceilal0i copii prin firea mea !lajin1 2i cuminte. 3ra
at4t de cunoscut1 !un1tatea mea 5nc4t, ades, coleii m1 !atjocoreau. 6ineam nespus la
animale 2i !unii mei p1rin0i m1 r1sf10au, d4ndu-mi mereu astfel de prieteni. Cu ei 5mi pl1cea
s1-mi petrec tot timpul, 2i nu eram mai fericit dec4t atunci c4nd 5i hr1neam 2i-i m4n4iam.
,ceast1 sl1!iciune s-a accentuat cu v4rsta 2i, ajun4nd un om 5n toat1 firea, 1seam 5n ea
prilej de mul0umire. Cei ce-au iu!it vre-odat1 un c4ine credincios, iste0, nici nu mai au nevoie
s1 li se e$plice natura sau intensitatea pl1cerii suflete2ti ce-o 5ncercam, 5n draostea
de7interesat1, altruist1 a unui animal e o und1 ce ajune drept 5n inima celor ce-au avut trista
posi!ilitate s1 cunoasc1 prietenia meschin1 2i ata2amentul schim!1tor al &mului.
M-am 5nsurat de timpuriu 2i m-am !ucurat nespus c4nd am 5n0eles c1 so0ia mea
avea o fire asem1n1toare. 8tiind ce mult 0ineam la animale, ea nu pierdea nici un prilej s1-mi
d1ruiasc1 cele mai dr11la2e e$emplare. ,veam p1s1rele, 2i iepura2i, 2i un pe2ti2or auriu, un
c4ine splendid, o maimu01 2i o pisic1.
3ra o pisic1 destul de mare, frumoas1, 5n 5ntreime near1 2i de-o-intelien01
i7!itoare. So0ia mea, o fire deose!it de supersti0ioas1, c4nd venea vor!a de intelien0a pisicii
amintea de vechi eresuri populare potrivit c1rora pisicile nere ar fi ni2te vr1jitoare. 'u cred
c1-ntotdeauna vor!ea cu serio7itate, 2i pomenesc aceasta doar fiindc1 mi-am amintit chiar
acum.
9i d1dusem numele (luto, 2i-mi devenise tovar12ul favorit de joac1. (isica nu l1sa
pe nimeni altul dec4t pe mine s1-i aduc1 de m4ncare, 2i m1 urm1rea 5ntr-una prin cas1. ,!ia
i7!uteam s-o opresc s1 nu se ia dup1 mine 2i pe strad1.
(rietenia noastr1 a durat ani de-a r4ndul, ani mul0i 5n care felul meu de-a fi,
5ntreaa-mi fire : cu ajutorul acelui demon ce poart1 numele -e0ie : s-a tot schim!at 5n r1u
2i m1-nro2esc f1c4nd acum m1rturisirea.
mele. 'u numai c1 nu-mi mai p1sa de ele, dar 5ncepusem s1 le chinuiesc. Sinur, (luto doar
nu-ndura prioana. 'u preetam 5ns1 s1 chinuiesc maimu0a, iepurii ori c4inele, c4nd
5nt4mplarea sau devotamentul lor prostesc mi-i aduceau 5n cale. Iar !oala tot cre2tea 5n mine
: 2i ce 5nro7itoare !oal1 e ,lcoolul. : 2i p4n1 la urm1 chiar 2i (luto, ce-m!1tr4nise 2i era
tot mai posac : chiar (luto, 7ic, a 5nceput s1 simt1 urm1rile st1rilor mele proaste.
