Annotated Bibliography
1. Blanch, Ross J. All the Hipsters Are Dead. Thought Catalog, n.p. 2 Oct. 2013,

Blanch addresses what people think the term, hipster, is. He talks about
people thinking theyre hipster when they buy clothes from certain places like
Urban Outfiters, or listen to music they would normally hate. He says that the
only reason people do this is to receive approval from their peers when they do
these things. He closes the paper by saying The people youre calling hipsters are
not hipsters, they are fashionable. All the hipsters are dead. This is a really
strong closing statement, and makes the reader examine the idea of hipsters really
being dead; that people nowadays are simply reenacting a fashion trend.
This paper is a good source because it provides more information about
hipsters, and their state of mind. Blanch brings up a good point, are all the hipsters
really dead? That statement made me think about the evolution of hipsters, just
like other fashionable eras, hipsters are likely to disappear, just like flappers. This
really helps me think of the evolution of hipsters and how it relates to nihilism.
2. Ehrlich, Brenna, and Andrea Bartz. Stuff Hipsters Hate: A Field Guide to the
Passionate Opinions of the I ndifferent. Berkeley, CA: Ulysses, 2010.
In Ch. 1, the authors describe hipsters as delusional and uprooted elitists
who turn to society and embrace nihilism. By doing so they become
philosophical psychopaths. They say hipsters are changeable beasts because
they adapt and change according to society and fads. The two authors believe that
people change as much as society. They want to fit in and live life according to
themselves; whether or not theyre copying the life of someone else to make their
lives more interesting. I really like their view on hipsters. They also relate hipsters
to Nihilism.
Because they relate hipsters to nihilism, this book fits perfectly with my
paper. They give me reasons to examine the cultural divergence as well as the
cultural similarities. They provide excellent points in saying that hipsters are
interchangeable with society and culture.
3. Iverson, Kristin How Hipsters and Irony Have Ruined Everything. The L
magazine, n.p, 19 Nov. 2012 Web. 22 Apr. 2014
Iverson evaluates irony and hipsterdom. She claims that people cannot live ironically;
it just doesnt work. She says that there is nothing ironic about mustaches or mugs.
She wants people to understand that there is meaning behind actions. She addresses
Womples statement irony is the ethos of our age by completely disagreeing with
her. She says irony can be used as a sense of detachment. People dont want to
acknowledge the bad, so they use irony and satire to avoid the situation.
This article was one of the few that stood out to me over the course of the
class. I think its because the author uses examples that are relatable. We
discussed this article so extensively, I have a good understanding of what hipsters
and irony have in common. This article will help with the understanding of
hipsters today, and how they relate to nihilism. This also provides a great example
for how people absolutely hate that irony has become so dominant in culture
today, you cant just give someone a present without them thinking there is
another underlying meaning to the object.

4. Stubbs, Jacob. The End of Hipstery and The Last Culture. The Hipster

This blog provides a good explanation of how hipsters have evolved over
the years. Jacobs gives detail of when (the 1950s) and where hipsters have
surfaced (Europe, Canada, United States). He also talks about the present day
hipster movement. He describes it as the will to irony. This is yet another
source that refers to hipsterdom as ironic. He sets the claim that hipsters bind
themselves to culture they hate. I.e. a person who hates Justin Beiber will buy a
Beiber shirt and wear it because it is ironic. He also says that man creates himself
and reality via creative action, moving history forward.
This blog is going to be a great source to use in my paper because it goes
pretty in depth and examines WHY hipsters do what they do. While this blog is
only one persons opinion, he provides evidence as to why he makes these claims,
making his reasoning creditable. I really like this blog because he examines
hipsters of the 50s as well as hipsters of today.

This article provides a satirical view of the lives of hipsters. Which offers
me a specific look at how people view hipsters. Although it is satirical, it provides
good and solid information about hipsters. It suggests that hipsters use things to
make themselves look unique and special, by using examples of fashion, attitude,
music, etc. Also, this article makes hipsters seem incompetent. This is good for
my paper because it offers a different view of hipsters and their roles in culture,
whether good, or bad. One thing that stands out in this article is the authors
distaste for hipsters. This is a one sided argument on how hipsters live.
This article will come handy for my paper because it provides me a
negative view on hipsters. It proves that not everyone cares for the lifestyles of
hipsters. It also provides me with examples of how hipsters live, which I can use
to explain what hipsters are in the opening of my paper. These examples will help
the reader understand what hipsters are and how I relate them and their culture to
nihilism.
6. How is Being Conservative Like Being A Hipster? The Hipster Conservative, n.p.,

The unknown author of this blog relates conservatives to hipsters by
stating that hipsters build their culture by taking the interesting bits from
everywhere and leaving what they dont like. Conservatives do the same thing
with political ideologies. Its an attitude about how more than a rigid system
of what. That doesnt mean conservatives dont believe in the what of things.
But this belief is tinged with some degree of irony or caution. This enables
conservatives to evaluate and appreciate, yea, appropriate elements of other
political systems without actually entering into those subcultures. This author
provides evidence to how irony, and caution relate to both hipsters and
conservatives. While those characteristics dont tie directly to Nihilism, you can
see the relations.
This blog, may be of use to relate hipsters to conservatives, other than that
it doesnt really provide support to how I believe hipsterdom and nihilism
coincide.

This is a very opinionated blog about how irony has effected today
through many aspects, particularly music. The author of this blog is clearly a
nihilist. He relates many cultural aspects to nihilism, especially songs by Foster
The People.
This article will help me because it ties nihilism to irony. In previous
sources I have found that hipsters are tied to irony; now I can tie hipster to
nihilism though irony as well as my own analysis. I didnt have much to write
about this blog, so I might want to go back and see if I can find more details that
support, my thesis.

After finding these sources, I feel like I need more on Nihilism. As I continue my research, I will
try to find articles more closely focused on Nihilism.
