Improved mutual engagement between mining companies and Indigenous communities has the potential to
create considerable livelihood opportunities for Aboriginal groups, especially those living in remote areas
where economic options are limited. World Vision Australia is currently expanding its relationships with the
miningsector,bothinternationallyanddomestically.Ourgoalistoleveragetheserelationshipstohelpaffected
communities better engage with the mining industry and for them to achieve improved intergeneration
communitydevelopmentaloutcomes,includingthesustainableoperationofcommunitytrusts.
WVAapproachtoworkingwithIndigenouscommunitiesisasfollows:
a) World Vision Australias Australia Program aims to design and implement successful programs that
tackle the causes of poverty and transform the lives of children and communities, guided by the
followingprinciples:
b) Webelievecommunitiesmustbeempoweredtodefinetheirdevelopmentalneeds,theirproblemsand
their solutions. We use participatory methodologies to ensure local involvement in the development
processandtoempowercommunitiesforselfmanagement.
c) We take a strengthsbased approach to working with communities, and work within existing
governancenetworkstorepairorstrengthencommunityengagementandlocalleadershipcapacity.
d) The Australia Programs strategic contribution is not to provide funds or services, but to provide
technicalassistanceforlongtermprojects,deliveredthrougheffectivepartnering.
e) We work in ways that do not displace or duplicate existing institutions, be they government, non
governmentorcommunityorganisations.

Prepare project design documentation, including a logical
frameworkofoutcomes,outputs,activitiesandindicators.
Through action learning cycles, ensure that project

Undertake regular financial and narrative reporting of progress,
includingfeedbacktoIndigenousgroups.
