Assignment Introduction
The practical assessment is intended to test candidates abilities to apply their
knowledge of health and safety to a practical situation, to demonstrate their
understanding of key issues and to communicate findings in an effective way. The
practical assessment comprises two elements, which require candidates to:
Carryout unaided a safety inspection of a worksite,
Prepare a report that persuasively urges management to take appropriate
action, explaining why such action is needed.
The aim of this unit is to enable learners to develop knowledge of the legislation and regulations
relating to health and safety in a construction workplace in order to conduct an audit and carry
out a risk assessment to the requirements for safe and productive working conditions. It is
important, when working in business, to ensure compliance with organizational procedures and
legal requirements, as the consequences of non-compliance can have serious implications for
employees and employers. It is important, therefore, for learners to appreciate that those working
in business must understand the principal issues which affect the working environment, for all
individuals and the organizations that employ them. This involves keeping up to date with
information on the legal issues that affect safe Working practices.
Everyone at work plays an important part in ensuring health and safety and it is essential that key
personnel are aware of their roles and responsibilities. Employers must take reasonable care to
protect their employees, and others, from the risk of injury, disease or death, while employees
must take care to protect themselves and others. Safe working conditions and the welfare of
employees can contribute to the success of an organization.
It is important that organizations take steps to prevent accidents in the workplace and monitor
procedures regularly. Learners will investigate the procedures that organizations have in place
for maintaining safe working conditions and the various ways organizations can conduct risk
assessments.
This is more likely unit introduction not an assignment introduction pls prepare an assignment
introduction which explain what criteria will be assessed, what are the assessment tools etc.
Assignment Scenario
You are working for a team of health and safety consultants. You have been asked to conduct
A review of health and safety procedures and practices in a construction organization and a
Service provider.
You work for a company that promotes good Health, Safety & welfare in the work place. You
have been asked to help new employees find out about:

LO 01
Define the main health, safety and welfare legislation in the construction sector and the
implications of non-compliance.
Task 1
1.1 Specify the roles and legal responsibilities of the parties involved in a given construction
site.(P1)
1.2 Summarize the key features of the management of health and safety at work regulations 1999
and CDM regulations.(P2)
1.3 Explain the penalties for noncompliance with the Health and Safety at work act 1974 (P3)
1.4 Specify responsibilities of those involved for providing welfare facilities on site.(P4)

LO 02
Explain the main requirements of an effective health and safety policy along with the
organizational arrangements necessary for its implementation
Task 2- (Is this a task? If so which criteria will be assessed and what the students suppose to do if not
I would suggest to delete this part?????

2.1 Analyze typical organizational policy and procedure documents and identify the roles of various
individuals. (P5)
2.2 Determine training needs from a range of supplied risk assessments including induction training
on site and CSCS. (P6)
2.3 Describe methods of recording healthy and safety inspections and data . (P7)

LO 3
Demonstrate an understanding of Hazard and risk identification in design and construction.
Assignment Scenario for Task 3, Task 4 ,Task 5
Is it clear? May be first you would say that student need to select an inspection area with following
characteristics (it is not clear how the inspection area described directly without asking them to select
such area)
The inspection area; should be chosen such that it presents a broad range of health and safety issues but
is not so large that it is unreasonable to undertake a full inspection in the time allowed. Typically, an
inspection area might be a workshop or a large open-plan office, Construction site. The types of hazards
and controls presented to the Student might include: machinery, fire, housekeeping, environmental and
ergonomic issues, hazardous substances, transport, electricity, safety signs, personal protective
equipment, welfare, access / egress and emergency evacuation. This list is neither prescriptive nor
exhaustive.

Task 3 -, (same as Task 2)

3.1 Select a method of hazard identification using data supplied in Annexure 1(P 8)
3.2 Identify hazards by observing a construction process within inspected area. (P 9, D 1, M 1)
3.3 Record the hazards relating to a process and /or environment in a provided format
Annexure 2.(P 10)
3.4 Identify significant hazards that will require risk assessments to be carried out.(P 11, D 2)
LO 04

Undertake risk assessment and formulate control measures to prevent ill health and injury.

Task 4
(same as Task 2)

4.1 Assess the likely harm relative to the identified work place hazards (P12)
4.2 Evaluate the severity and likelihood ratings for identified work process and /or
environments.(P13,M 2)
4.3 Select and formulate appropriate control measures.(P14,D 3,M 3)

LO 05
Review, revise and monitor assessments as required

Task 5
5.1 Review risk assessments in the light of change in circumstances ( P 15)
5.2 Implement a change in procedure or policy. (P 16) (can they implement this and how do you
assess this?
5.3 Monitor the effectiveness of implemented changes. (P 17)(same as 5.2)

What is the purpose of above part? Clear instruction to be given to the learner (purple
in colour)
