Unit 36 p1
Report
There are various types of presenting roles in the media industry such as:
News presenters
Chat show host\
Radio/DJ
Broadcast journalist
Game show host
Lifestyle host
I will be discussing how new presenters, radios presenters and chat show differ from one
another. I will be going into depth on how they interview guests or how they present using
things such as: communications skills, interview styling, interview techniques etc.
A news presenter
Is a person that presents a news program in a form of a television show, the internet or on the
radio?
GeorgeAlagiah is an example of a British news reader. He is a journalist and television
Newsreader, he has been a sole presenter since 2007 and he has been nominated for a British
Academy Television Award for Best News Coverage.

As you can see, he is dressed very formally and looks like he is taking his job very seriously
because he is playing an important role which is delivering formal international world news. He
is much focused on what he is doing and I can tell this by his body language; he is holding and
moving papers around which consists of informative information. He is also looking straight in
to the camera whilst reading the news. In the back ground you can see GMT in big bold
white letter; this is world news and it shows the time in English because if one was to watch the
news in a different country, the time wouldnt be the same. This news reader is presenting
information so therefore he addresses the audience in a formal language. His tone of voice is
very clear and straight to the point, he is very confident when he speaks and we can tell this by
Shamim nalule
his use of language and phrase structure what we are going to do now is join our colleague on
BBCs news channel he speaks with authority. He is a little expressive every time he gathers
new information from outside sources. The way he interprets information makes the news
easier to understand and follow as he uses rhetorical question which makes the viewers become
imaginative. In addition to that, his way of presenting news is very investigative; in order to
obtain accurate and reliable information he says from Timbuktu Tom Ofescy reports now
this allows the audience to have a clear insight to the situation that the reporter is reporting at
first hand isnt humour. Furthermore, his is smartly dressed. He is wearing a suit, a tie and
reading sunglasses. This however shows that this job is very important. His tone of voice whilst
presenting the news is very direct, and he gets rightto the point. This is very appropriate to the
target audience.
BBC is founded by the license fee payers so therefore it has to answer to the public. George
Alagiah presents the News in a way that people will easily understand him. So he uses Standard
English in order for clear communication as BBC presenting is linked to being the voice of
authority. This means that every information presented is factual and accurate.
Channel 5 News
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=F4WUiB7xmgM
Channel 5 News is presented by Emma Crosby. In comparison, presenting wise, both presenter on
channel 5 and BBC 1 use similar presenting skills and styles to deliver information. For example they
use communication skills such as progressing from point to point etc. They also have the same target
audience (people that like listening or watching the news)

In contrast to BBC news, channel five newsstart at 5 oclock whereas BBC news come on
television at 6 oclock. This clip on channel 5 the news is being presented by a woman. She is
smartly dressed; wearing a bright red dress which stands out, when presenting a serious topic,
she encourages the target audience to get involved is the subject matter at 6,30 we will be
discussing the prospect of military in intervention against Syria, let us know what you think.
Her pace of delivering news is very warm and quite slow. Her style of presenting captivates the
viewers because she uses journalistic context and she also uses quotations. In comparison to the
BBC news studio, channel 5 news studio looks much brighter. The view is very much clearer.
Both presenters from the two different channel have a similar way of presenting as they both
build rapport and the main purpose as to why they do so is to present information to their
Shamim nalule
target audience, as they have quite a similar target audience which is age 25 and over because
that is the kind of age group that would be more interested in watching the new and a younger
audience would be more interested in watching something less formal. And the style of
presenting both presenters use appeals to a certain social class e.g. politicians, high class
citizens, and middle class citizens, people that are interested or care about what is happening
around the world. Nationally and internationally.
A chat show host
Is a person that (or group of people) talks about different subjects put forward by a chat show.
Most times a single guest discusses their occupation or whatever they may love to do with host.
Guests are often introduced and enter from back stage.
Graham Norton is one of the most famous chat show host in the UK his show is self-titled
The Graham Norton show it is a comedy genre of show and it has had thirteen series filmed
and has had 196 episodes and it runs for 50 minutes.

Guests on the show normally usually come on to promote their new/latest projects therefore
Graham Norton asks them questions such as what do people need to know about your new
film? Tell us more about it this is an open question so therefore the guest will be able to
elaborate in more about the film detail. The reason why presenters like Graham Norton ask
open question is to enhance the topic so that the audience can understand the information
about the movies. For instance, understanding the narrative, and the characters of the movies.
However Norton asks questions in forms of conversations rather than just him asking
questions. He simply converses with his guests which makes the show much more entertaining
to watch. He also asks a few open questions every now and then which create humour to the
show. And his style of interviewing is light-hearted; he doesnt put words into the interviewees
mouth, so he lets the topic just flow. He is also an attentive listener; we can see this we when he
asks a question and patiently waits for his guests to reply.
As you can see in these two image, graham Norton uses a lot of visual
techniques to express himself. He looks comical, he is dressed very
playfully; he us wearing a black blazer with a bright yellow line around
the his neck and chest area, and he is also wearing sun glasses despite
the fact that it isnt funny, and also holding a microphone perhaps he
want s to sound louder even thought he doesnt need to as he is
wearing a clip on microphone. He also uses physical gestures, like
hand movements. In addition to that, he also uses facial expressions
to create a humorous atmosphere e.g. he pulls funny faces to express
how he feels. The audience is very much involved throughout the
show because you can see them in the background and can always
hear laughter.
Shamim nalule
When interviewing, it is noticeable that graham Norton always has note cards on him and every
now and then he has a look through to remind him what the next question or topic might be.

Graham way of presenting suits the type of show he
hosts, this is because he is a comedian doesnt take
himself too seriously therefore the type of audience
that he would be attracting would have to be people
that are interested in comedy from age 16 and over. In
the studio audience you can see all types of age groups.
His style of presenting is not boring because he progresses from point to point; he has various
type of topic to talk about with his guests.
Another popular chat show in the UK is called the chatty man and it is
hosted by Alan Carr. He is a comedian and a TV personality. He won
awards which include:
In this particular scene on the show you can
see the guests are al sitting on the same seat
facing the host who is sitting in the chair
opposite and you can also see that they are
deep in conversation and laughter.
As you can see, in the three images. Graham
Norton often has performances on his show, and
they usually happen at the end of the show. This is
a special performance by one of his guests (will
smith) and he is also involved in the performance
as you can see, he is also dancing which makes the
show entertaining because he never dances, he
just hosts.

In comparison to the graham show, the chatty man show setting is extremely
different. As you can see in the image below the studio is much smaller than the
graham show
In comparison to the graham show studio, the chatty mans studio is much brighter
and colour full

At the start of the show,
the audience gives the host a warm welcome, you the camera angle changes to a point
of view shot and the audience at home can be able to see the audience in the studio
clapping and cheering Alan Carr as he walks on stage. He interacts with his audience
and this creates a calm relaxed feel. He does stand up comedy for 5 minutes, which
makes it even more interesting to watch as he is a funny man. The audience are very
much involved in every single aspect of the show because Alan Carr keeps the
entertained. After he does his stand up comedy he then mentions his guest list and
this keeps the audience excited and engaged. One main important element is that he
always has famous stars on his show. This immediately grabs the target audiences
attention, which is age 16-24, further his show is regularly advertised on channel4 to
keep people watching at home posted. His studio is constructed with the stares so his
guests have to walk down. Alan car gives a warm welcome to his guest, one by one
and escorts the sofa and offers then soft drinks or wine, he creates a homely
atmosphere for his guest, he make the feel welcome and comfortable, when interview
he doesnt put words in the interviews mouth, he lets them speak.
When interviewing his guests, his tone of voice his very friendly and investigative in a
way as he tries to gather information from them. Sometimes personal information
however he successfully gets the information he wants because the guest feel at ease
with him so they tell him almost what he wants to know, the whole show from start
to end is humorous. Alan Carr has a way of creating an entertaining world when he
He dresses very formally when
hosting his show. This is the start
of his show, as you can see he is
wearing sunglasses, a suit and he is
holding a microphone. He looks
well presented.
Shamim nalule
interviews, it keeps both his audience and interviewee engaged, he is also very
consistent with the way he structures his questions, he asks the questions everyone
wants to know, and he asks them with humour and light- heartedness so the guest
cant really take offense to anything he says. The main reason why these guests come
on the show is to promote the new projects for instance film promotion, tour
promotion, book promotion, clothing line etc. However sometimes guests just come
on the show just to have a chat and meet their fans. Alan Carr uses informal language
especially when he asks an open question so you have never done a Sid - comb
before? So how was it like putting your baby out there? Was you nervous? his pace
of delivery is quite fast; he asked multiple questions and the same time. and the
grammar in his sentence structure when he speaks is quite poor is say was instead
of were his style of presenting appeals to a low class social group, perhaps the less
educated people, who dont take themselves too seriously as it is an informal show.
And the use of very strong language is permitted so everyone is able to express
themselves in whichever way they want. However it is appropriate to the target
audience. His show is presented in 4 parts and adverts come on in between breaks.
The least famous people come on first and the most famous people always come on
the last part of the show to end the show on a high note. Allan says I do get blamed
for irresponsible drinking on the show but who care? when he says this audience
just laugh because he gives a sense of rebelliousness when people like because he still
supplies alcohol on his show.

Welcomes his guests, one at a time.
He sits on the chair opposite his guest,
who is sitting in the sofa, as you can see
the body language of the guest is relaxed.
He is pouring a drink for himself and his guest. This is
quite entertaining and unique because most chat
show/hosts like The Graham Show dont really offer
their guests drinks and the chatty man show does.
Welcomes his guest, one at a time.

DJ/Radio interview
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nvrxdic8sUs
Scot Mills is a British radio, DJ television presenter and best known for his presenting show on
BBC radio. During his Career Scot Mills has been nominated for a few awards and won some
as shown below.

Scott Mills have a unique wayof interviewing via the radio. In this particular radio show, he is
speaking to an interviewer (Chris stark) who had interviewed a famous person (Mila Kunis.)

The purpose of this interview to be
interpretive; scot mills gets Chris stark to
come into the radio station to explain
why he did what he./ therefore scot Mills
uses open question to get information out
of him. The interview is slightly light hearted, it is entertaining it involves active listening
because as the interviewee reply to the questions being asked, and the interviewer is actively
listening and observing I can see a look of fear in your eye he says. Now this radio interview
was filmed so we get to see reactions of both the interviewee and interviewer. And also this
radio interview has an investigative element to it. This is shown when Scott Mills re - winds the
ID unit to listen back to the sound audio of the interview Chris Stark had done. This also
includes the physical gestures as he moves back ad forth. The interview is humours as we can
tell this by the use of phrase structure. The interviewer says, What was it like to be ugly?
Because you are hot. massive cringe moment this statement has a sarcastic and playful
element to it.

Visually, we can see that his body language
is very relaxed; he has his hand around his
waist, slightly leaning in and looking at the
interviewee. He is quite expressive when he
speaks, as we can his facial expression
change every time he progresses from one
point to another.
Shamim nalule
Interviewing, he asks open and closed questions with confidence. In this particular interview his
style as to both summarise what had happen and ask key questions.
Question types
There are several types of questions used in different types of ways. I have looked at shows
such as radio, news and chat show for instance Alan Carr (the chatty man) and The Graham
Show. I initially first inspected the question types of a news presenter and the type of style they
ask the questions in which they are used. For instance I discovered a really bad example of
interview skills on the BBC and the type of questions the interviewer had asked were closed
questions, he was putting words in the interviewees mouth, he was being rude and pushy, he
didnt let then interviewee speak. The dis advantage of asking closed questions signifies that the
person will only give yes or no answers; there wont be detail in the information they are
providing the audience. The questions Parkinson asks have no relevance to what the
interviewer came on the interview to do. He starts asking personal questions that the
interviewee (Meg Ryan) chooses not to answer and the whole situation becomes awkward. The
questions he continuously asks are out of context and nonfactual; he has no evidence to back
his questions up and this automatically makes him look unprofessional. Later on in the show I
see that the interview is becoming more and more frustrated by the questions she is being asks,
I can tell this by her body language and tone of voice. Every time Meg Ryan tries to speak,
Parkinson cut her off. So he provides no room for her to voice her thoughts. Its like he is
provoking her to get a negative reaction out of her, I can tell this by type of questions he asks
her, which are irrelevant and biased. The questions he asks are challenging and at time difficult
to answer because we can hear the interviewee stammering and saying ums and erms.
