Innovative teaching and learning resources
The times when both teachers and students had to rely only on course and/or literature books are long
over; with todays technical development they have a wide range of different resources. esearch shows
that !nglish language classrooms are e"uipped with fi#ed data pro$ectors% interactive whiteboards%
speakers and computers with Internet access in order to ease the work and help both students and
teachers to achieve a more efficient result. This does not e#clude the use of other more traditional
resources

'ritten teaching material (printed and/or digital)% be that course books% newspapers% maga*ines%
printouts% etc. are the widely used materials in teaching. These materials give the basic guideline in
every area of !nglish teaching/learning

. To mention a few,
Course/Text books - even though there is a huge variety of course books% for different levels and
purposes% as a result to research and debates it is clear that they are a necessity in teaching and
becoming a basic guideline and strong base for both teachers and students
.

Dictionaries - in learning a foreign language dictionaries are the best friend of the students
Authentic materials - such as newspapers% maga*ines% flyers% blogs etc. can be used as complementary
materials in certain topics and e#ercises

ealia% pictures and ob$ects% are used for giving students the impression of getting out of the 0stiff1
environment of traditional classrooms and by use of their personal e#periences a better understanding of
the topics

. They are mostly used for creative activities and speaking/writing topics

Pictures - graphic and visual way to aid student e#planations% instructions% topics and/or idea for
creative activities% etc.
Cards - interactive way for developing vocabulary% oral skills% grammar etc. in form of flashcard or card
games
5ongs% films and video clips can be used either for offering a model of pronunciation% helping students
get a comprehensive picture of how !nglish is used in a 6native environment% as topics of discussions or
for ac"uiring a specific range of vocabulary. 7owever it is also important that these videos/songs are not
too long% are inappropriate or have a language way over of the students level

activities preceding listening or grammar e#ercises.
The Internet and websites have a large variety of grammar e#ercises% dictionaries% encyclopedias% word
games% etc. which can be used for better understanding in all areas of language learning (listening%
reading% writing% spelling% grammar% vocabulary and in some cases speaking)

In conclusion to learn !nglish it is recommended for both teachers and students to use any and every
resource they have access to. elying on one source of information only will limit students/teachers in
developing the necessary skills and competencies necessary for learning/teaching a language. :aking
full use of the technology and resources available for an !;< class will give the students all the
necessary means to ma#imi*e their language development.
