Summary:

This document outlines entry details for the 2014/15 SLSWA SunSmart Surf Board Riding
Championships (including Masters Championships) which will be held at Secret Harbour on Saturday 14
June 2014.
Action: Club entries must be completed online via www.surflifesavingwa.com.au by 11pm Tuesday 10 June
2014. Late entries will not be accepted as heat seeding and draws need to be finalised.
Note: Board Riding Teams will consist of 4 members and there can only be 1 team entered per club.

EVENT DATE AND LOCATION
The 2014/15 SLSWA Surf Board Riding Championships will be held at Secret Harbour on Saturday 14 June 2014.
Marshalling will take place from 7.00am to 7.30am on the morning of the championships. Competitors who fail to
marshal at 7.00 to 7.30am at Secret Harbour SLSC shall not be eligible to compete.

ENTRY FEES
$38.00 per Masters competitor (30yrs and Over), $40.00 per Senior competitor (U15-Open). This entry
fee enables entry in to all other State Championship events throughout the 2014/15 season (excluding
Pool Rescue) as outlined in the Member Fees and Charges Circular.
Clubs will be invoiced accordingly for entry fees at the conclusion of this event.
Entry fees are non-refundable:
o If the championships cannot be run on either its scheduled date or backup date entry fees will
not be refunded.
o Competitors failing to marshal at the commencement of the championships cannot compete
following relocation/rescheduling and will not be entitled to a refund.

CLUB TEAM MANAGERS AND COMPETITION OFFICIALS MEETING
A meeting for Club Team Managers and Competition Judges/Officials will take place at 7.30am on the morning of
the event at Secret Harbour SLSC.

ENTRY CONDITIONS
Entries will be on-line via www.surflifesavingwa.com.au.
Entries will close 11pm Tuesday 10 June 2014.
NO LATE ENTRIES WILL BE ACCEPTED. Heat draws will be created from the entries system after close of
entries.
Entry conditions, proficiency and patrol hour requirements will be as per SLSWA Bulletin 01-1314 -
2014 SLSWA SunSmart Senior Surf Lifesaving Championships and SLSA Surf Sports Manual (34
th
Edition)
plus its amendments. The patrol hour requirement will use the 2013 calendar hours performed, or on a
pro-rata basis as defined in the bulletin.
Age categories for these championships are taken as of 30 September 2013. Ie competitors will
compete in the same age groups as they did during the 2013/14 surf sports season. To compete in the
U/15 category, competitors must possess the SRC as a minimum and U/17, U/19, Open and Masters
competitors must possess the Bronze Medallion as a minimum.
Competitors who fail to marshal at 7.00 to 7.30am at Secret Harbour SLSC on the day of competition
shall not be eligible to compete.
Event rounds, excluding team events, may not be held up for competitors who compete in more than
one event category.

MEDAL PRESENTATIONS
Presentation of championship medallions will be held at Secret Harbour SLSC approximately half an hour after the
conclusion of the final event.
GENERAL INFORMATION
1. Board riding judging criteria will be as per A.S.A short board judging criteria i.e. A surfer must execute
the most radical controlled maneuver in the critical section of the wave with speed and power
throughout. The surfer who executes such maneuvers on the biggest and/or best waves for the longest
functional distance shall be deemed the winner.
2. Longboard judging criteria will be as per above except points will be awarded for the following classic
surfing maneuvers: i.e. nose riding, trimming and stalling, walking the board, standing and crouching
island pullouts, bottom turns all rail or from tail, cut backs- drop knee or wide stance sit down style,
tube rides and cover-ups (barrels), top turns, curl turns, fade take-offs, late take-offs and critical surfing
switching feet if used functionally.
Note: Trick surfing will not be taken into account by judges. E.g. spinners, headstands, coffin rides,
cockroaches, fin first take-offs, surfing backwards, 360s and helicopters.
3. All heats will be controlled through signal flags:
Green Flag - Heat is in progress, Orange Flag - Heat has 5 minutes to go, Red Flag - Heat is finished



4. All heats will be water/wet starts.
5. Competitors will report to the Beach Marshall 10 minutes prior to the start of their heat to register and
collect a competition rash vest.
6. Competitors can paddle out (off beach) when yellow flag is raised (5 minutes to go flags) and remain
clear of the competitors in the water.
7. Competitors can paddle into competition area when red flag is raised and be prepared to commence
competition when the green flag is subsequently raised.
8. Competitors, upon completion of their heat, must return to the beach in a kneeling/prone position so
as not to be confused with the competitors in the next heat.
9. Competitors are requested to return their competition shirts to the Beach Marshall immediately upon
return to the beach.
10. Three (3) competitors will progress from 6 or 5 person heats
Two (2) competitors will progress from 4 person heats
Please Note ratios for progression may be altered by the event director prior to or on the day of
competition.

BOARD TEAMS RIDING
1. Teams shall consist of four members who shall be marshaled as a team and only 1 team per competing
club can be entered.
2. Each team competitor must commence their section of the event from the allocated beach or water
start line as determined by the Referee.
3. The team members order of competing in the event cannot be changed following team marshaling.
Additionally no substitutions can be made once the event has commenced.
4. Each team member can catch a maximum of three waves, a change to this may occur depending on
unfavourable surf conditions.
5. The recommended match time of reach heat/round or final is 60 minutes. No extension to the match
time shall be made following the start of that particular heat or round.
6. Each wave ridden (or claimed) shall be scored out of 10 as per the normal conditions of board riding
competition.
7. Each team will nominate one power surfer who will have all 3 waves counted into the team score. The
order of this competitor is at the discretion of the team and nominated at time of marshaling.
8. Each of the other three team members must nominate two of the three waves ridden as counting for
the team score. This is indicated by the competitor raising both their hands above their head prior to
paddling out again for the next wave, or if the competitor has completed their 2
nd
or 3
rd
wave and is
returning to the beach. When the competitor has nominated two waves they must return to the beach
and make contact (visibly tag) the next team member.
9. Stand up surfing for a team member returning to the beach to tag the next member is not permitted.
They must return to the beach in a kneeling/prone position.
10. On receiving the release tag on the designated start line or in the designated zone, the next
competitor, who is waiting with their board, will proceed to sea and carry out the next leg of the event.
11. The final result is the team with the highest points achieved in the nominated time or 60 minutes.
12. Penalties will apply as follows:
a. Team members competes out of turn loss of 5 points
b. Competitor catches more than the allocated wave limit loss of 5 points
c. Riding interference to another competitor zero score for that wave
d. Paddling interference/other interference loss of lowest nominated scoring ride
e. Team fails to catch eleven wave limit within allocated time loss of 5 points

Interference/ fouling will be called in ALL circumstances and the interference rules and requirements will be
explained and emphasised at the competitors briefing.






There will be three board riding judges plus the chief judge for each heat. Clubs are encouraged to supply judges
for the heats and finals. The Carnival Referee Neil Bowie, in conjunction with SLSWA Surf Sports staff, will appoint
judges to the heats and finals. In addition to judges, we will need some competition officials to assist with
competitor marshalling and timekeeping. If you can assist, please contact Chris Inglis on the details following.
