Dear Adventurers,

Travelling, especially in the company of old and new friends, is perhaps the greatest way to explore
the diverse histories, cultures and peoples of our world. Aboard the M/V Orlova we have charted an
two incredible expeditionary cruises for you and invited an outstanding cast of resource guides to
enrich your experience. Our mission is to fully experience the arts and life ways of the Inuit, while
at the same time reveling in the glorious landscape they call home.
With its ancient history, the Arctic remains a formidable place – the stuff of legends and heroes.
Maintaining a deep attachment to its rich and storied past, the Arctic of today and tomorrow is ever
more exciting. The historic land claims agreement that became Nunavut is entering its ninth year.
We are witnesses of a grand experiment – an empowering force that ripples throughout the land
and all around the world. Models for community development, social, judicial and educational
advances and above all, the preservation and celebration of Inuit heritage, are putting Canada’s
newest territory on the world stage.
2007 / 2008 has been declared the International Polar Year (IPY). Celebrating the 125th
anniversary of this global research initiative, the IPY community will be providing new insights
into global processes, past and present, and coordinating global campaigns with a bipolar focus.
This year’s agenda will address climate change as measured by local impact and adaptation and
the health and well being of the Inuit communities. As always, we will carry experts in these fields
who will provide insight and challenging dialogue.

The charitable, nonprofit Walrus Foundation is dedicated to extending debate on matter vital to
Canadians and to supporting writers , readers, artists and ideas. On our expeditions, we’ll be able to
to that with you and our northern neighbours in both the Canadian Arctic and Greenland.
Forgetting boundaries, we examine the ebb and flow of daily life in the North and the impact that
history has on today’s world. Some of these stories are covered in the special all-Arctic issue of
The Walrus, published in November 2007.
Our greatest treasure on these journeys remains the local guests who share their own histories and
perspectives as we journey through their land. Whether artists or filmmakers, cultural ambassadors
or musicians, they leave us a gift that lingers. Join us for a journey of a lifetime as we take pleasure
and delight in the natural history, geology and rich cultural diversity of our north. We’re offering
an eclectic mix of entertainment, education and exploration. We believe learning is more engaging
and pleasurable if the mix includes some fun. Through it all, there will be music, art, smart talk and
good friends.
Happy Travels,

The Walrus Foundation Presents:
Baffin Expedition aboard Lyubov Orlova September 2 - 12, 2008

The east side of Baffin Island is one of the world’s great
coastlines.  The remnants of the Laurentide Icesheet provides
the backdrop for the rugged mountainous spine that runs
from the Cumberland Peninsula up to Bylot Island and
beyond to Devon and Ellesmere.  Deep fjords cut into the
main Baffin range where we find glaciers spilling down to the
sea. The landscape is an artist’s paradise, and we will make
time for sketching and painting with interactive workshops
and lectures from artists familiar with Baffin Island.
Join us as we have a look at some of the wilder places in this
untamed land: the sheer bird cliffs to the north of the Our Route
Cumberland Peninsula, the ocean trench paralleling Isabella
Bay- home to bowhead whales, and the winding fjords above
Clyde River on Baffin’s northeast shoulder.  We’ll skirt the
shores of Bylot and Devon Islands, as we steam into
Lancaster Sound toward Qausuittuq (Resolute Bay).

Walrus Expedition aboard Lyubov Orlova September 12 - 24, 2008

On this voyage, we’ll discover one of the Arctic’s richest

regions, both in human and natural history. From
Resolute we will delve into the rich waters of Lancaster
Sound, renowned for its abundance of beluga whales,
among other marine mammals.
Following Baffin’s eastern coast we will visit vibrant Inuit
communities that dot the geologically spectacular
coastline.
Crossing Davis Strait to Greenland and the splendid town Our Route
of Ilulissat, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, we cruise
among the towering spires, where North America’s
icebergs migrate from the massive Greenland icecap as it
tumbles down to meet the sea.
Our Itinerary:
Qausuittuq (Resolute Bay) Uummannaq
Arriving in Resolute early afternoon, we embark the Lyubov Orlova. Uummannaq sits in the shadow of a towering backdrop: an impressive and
imposing 1,175-metre hunk of red gneiss called Uummannaq Mountain.
Beechey Island
This island is best known as the epicentre of the search for the lost Franklin Ilulissat (Jakobshvns Isfjord)
Expedition, for it was here that the expedition spent its first winter (1845-46). A lively and colourful town, Illulisat is a favourite for world travellers. Just
beyond the town are spectacular views of the Jacobshavn icefield.

Arctic Bay is called Ikpiarjuk - “the pocket” - because of the high hills Qikiqtarjuak (Broughton Island)
surrounding the bay. In the northern part of the peninsula, where the community On the north side of Auyuittuq National Park, this 19th century whaling area is
