Purpose
The purpose of this assignment is to provide a framework within which the
learner can:
Explore organisational structure and culture
Examine different approaches to management and leadership
Examine ways of using motivational theories
Understand mechanisms for developing effective teamwork in organisations
Scenario
You have been looking for a new job in human resources for sometime and have been
invited for interview as a business adviser for a large recruitment consultancy. As part
of the interview process you have been asked to prepare a powerpoint presentation on
approaches to management. You will need to research and compare two different
organisations and one of these should preferably be your own organisation or one you
are familiar with.

Task 1 Structures and Culture and approaches to management and leadership

You will need to prepare a presentation of approximately 15 20 minutes duration
which illustrates the theory of organisational structure and culture.

Select two different organisations one should be your own organisation or one
you are familiar with. The organisations should be sufficiently different in order that
meaningful comparisons can be made for example, different size, type or sector.

In your presentation include copies of slides, presenter notes and handouts.
Drawing on appropriate theory ensure you cover the following:

a) Compare the structure and culture and how this affects business
performance

b) Discuss the factors which influence individual behaviour at work

c) Discuss the effectiveness of different leadership styles in different
organisations

d) Explain how organisational theory underpins the practice of management

Task 2 Motivation and developing effective teamwork

The interview was a success and you have now been working at the company for
six months. During that time you have impressed the senior partners and have
been asked to deliver a short training session on effective teamworking at a
business forum for new business start-ups.

Prepare material either in the format of an oral presentation or a written report.
You will need to select one organisation this can be your own workplace or an
organisation you are familiar with and research the application of theories
underpinning teamwork and group behaviour. Drawing on appropriate theory, you
will need to:

a) use examples of situations to compare the leadership styles of three
different managers in the organisation and the impact of these styles on
group performance particularly in periods of change

b) compare the application of different motivation theories within the workplace

c) evaluate the usefulness of a motivation theory for managers

d) explain the nature of groups and group behaviour within organisations

e) discuss factors that may promote or inhibit the development of effective
teamwork in organisations

f) evaluate the impact of technology on team functioning within an
organisation
