First Aid and Road Safety Awareness programmes
There are at least 10,000 number of active three wheel drivers in the
Colombo District who are normally the first people helping and
transporting victims to hospitals and medical facilities and most of the
time the situation is worsen due to the lack of knowledge on First Aid
so therefore the SLRCS Colombo Branch and the Colombo City Traffic
Police department of the Sri Lanka Police conducted the second phase
of the First Aid and Road Safety Awareness programme on the 05
th
,
06
th
and the 19
th
of April 2014.
A total number of 300 three wheel drivers participated from areas of
Maligawaththe, Grand pass and Fort where they were educated on
airway management, recovery methods, wounds & bleeding, fracture
management, burns and patient transportation as many deaths have
been attributed due to the lack of knowledge in administering first
aid , during the first 60 minutes since an accident. On completion of
the programme the participants were given a certificate and a sticker
to be pasted on the three wheels.
As the SLRCS is increasingly concerned about the rapid escalation of
the road safety crisis in the Colombo District urgent action was
needed to reduce the rising mortality rate in Sri Lanka and
accordingly SLRCS has also identified the importance of ensuring the
government efforts by being an auxiliary in addressing this crisis.
President of the SLRCS Mr. Jagath Abeysinghe, Branch Executive
Officer of the Colombo Branch Mrs. Kumari Kothalalawala, National
First Aid Consultant Mr. Upali Amarasekara, Sub inspector of Police
Mr. S. kaviraj and several other officials were present at the event.
Meanwhile the SLRCS Colombo Branch plans to expand this project
into various parts of the island in the future.
