Level 4: Modernism in Graphic Design
Level 5: How has the effects of Consumerism affected design in the early C20th?
AIM AND/OR OBJECTIVE OF YOUR PROPOSED C.O.P.3 PROJECT
Consumerism themed design aimed at the male audience
1. What research needs to be undertaken into the general and specific contexts of your practice?
An example of research which would need to be undertaken, to gain context within this project would be
primary research into existing examples of consumeristic design which is aimed to engage the male
audience, falling under the themes of Sigmund Freuds theory of human nature, driven animal instincts and
desires.
Contextual research to existing theories on the subject which focus on consumerism based and aimed at a
male audience. Examples of themed adverts and an accompanying analysis of the images, videos or over
advert-based material, which would support, or clash my critical analysis.
2. What approach(es) will you take and what processes, methods, materials and tools are to be involved
in research into your practice?
I will investigate into methods which have been applied to existing promotional design for products aimed
at the male audience. Products which capitalise on the theory of human nature to advertise to men, and
the techniques used. Also, how different mediums of packaging, colours, models and other variables can
be used to appeal to the desired audience.
3. What preparation or investigations do you need to undertake for your creative practice to take place?
I will need to undertake research involving existing products aimed at a male audience, pointless
commodities such as fragrances, clothes and accessories. Products which are unnecessary, items which
you purchase to impress people who frankly dont care. Whilst also looking at the advertising campaigns
which promote the product, and decipher the hidden Freudian persuasions within the promotion, and within
the Graphic Design. With supporting contextual research.
4. What research do you need to undertake regarding who your creativity is for?
I need to research into brands which use sexual desires and other Freudian methods to attract the male
audience to their product, such as Lynx body spray, who often use women in their ad campaigns to
suggest things. And how exactly their concept is marketed, in terms of the physical and digital collateral
produced for the campaigns.
