ayne Township
and its 27 square
miles of rolling,
lake darted country was not
always known as Wayne. It
was not always part of Passaic
County. Long before the
coming of the White Man, it
was inhabited by quiet,
industrious Indians who
farmed the rich meadowlands
and hunted and fished in the
woods and streams. Their
legacy to us lies in the many
place names of Indian origin,
which have given their iden-
tity to our countryside.
In 1694, the English in
New York City sent a young
surveyor, miner and land
speculator named Arent Schuyler
on a secret mission to North Jersey
and beyond to check on a rumor
that the French were trying to
rouse the Indians to rebel
against the English.
Schuyler found the rumor
to be false, but discovered
a rich fertile valley where the
Indians grew a variety of
crops. Schuyler reported his
findings to the English in
New York City; then con-
vinced seven prominent men
to invest in the purchase of
the land he referred to as the
Pompton Valley. These men
were Major Anthony
Brockholst, Samuel Bayard,
Samuel Berry, Hendrick and
David Mandeville, George
Ryerson and John Mead. The
seven chose Schuyler to be nego-
tiator with the Indians for the
Indian Rights to the area. Samual
Bayard was chosen to deal with the
East Jersey Company who had the
land rights from the King of
England. Approximately 5,000
acres were purchased for 250
pounds and wampum (shells the
size and shape of a cigarette used
for barter).
The purchase of the land was
concluded on November 11,
1695. The area now known as
Wayne Township then became
part of New Barbadoes in Essex
County. In 1710, the same area
became part of Saddle River
Township in Bergen County.
Arent Schuyler moved to
Belleville, New Jersey, where his
servant brought him a bit of metal

J
im rushed home after
leaving the hospital where
his mother just endured a
non-emergency heart valve
replacement procedure, after
which, the surgeon placed
Martha in the hands of the
after surgery cardiac care
physicians. This team of doc-
tors did not want the new
valve to be over-stressed, so
they gave Martha medication
to slow-down her heart rate.
As it turned out, they slowed
it down so much and so fast
that Martha died and they
couldnt bring her back.
Martha was 77 years old.
Jim, the eldest brother of
4 children, was distraught to
say the least, turning next to
sorrow then to anger, Jim
called me from the funeral
home to tell me this story,
cursing and threatening to sue
the doctors for killing his
mother. I was Marthas and
her late husband Bobs finan-
cial advisor for over 20 years
and adored these wonderful
people and they felt the same
way about me. I was horrified
when Jim called me with the
devastating news that Martha,
my friend, would be my client
no more. What Jim said to me
next made an indelible
impression.
Early in my career, some
33 years ago, I instructed my
clients to list me in their little
black book, you know the one
I am talking about, their
address and phone book. I
told Martha to list me under
F for Financial and under
L for life insurance and
again under I for income.
Martha and Bob were loyal
and faithful clients who fol-
lowed my suggestions and rec-
ommendations to the letter.
Her calendar and appoint-
ment book had my name and
number in all of the places I
told her to place it, just in
case. Now Martha was gone
and the life insurance claim
forms needed to be completed
and filed. The lawyer wanted
to charge the family thousands
of dollars to probate the
estate. Stopping that, I told
Jim it would be my honor and
obligation to help him
through the process with no
cost whatsoever! And that is
exactly what we did.
Jim explained that his
mother had the ultimate trust
in me for she left multiple
notes to him so that it would
be impossible to overlook just
one. Martha left more than a
dozen Little Yellow Sticky
post-it notes anywhere Jim
would look in her house for
anything important. She
posted those Little Yellow
Stickys all over the house.
One on her night stand and
one more in the night stand
top drawer. There was a L.Y.S.
in the bathroom and another
on and in her strong box. One
more was found in the car
glove box too. There was a
Little Yellow Sticky on the
refrigerator and one more in
the basement by Bobs tools.
Jim told me that he found 13
Little Yellow Stickys in total.
I was warmed and
enthused that Martha listened
to me and performed to per-
fection. You see that each and
every L.Y.S. was really a
L.O.I., Letter of Instruction,
written to Jimmy, her eldest
and geographically closest son.

D
uring the month of
April, the Wayne
Township Memorial
First Aid Squad responded to
397 emergency responses in
Wayne Township. The volun-
teer membership put in 980
hours on calls (equivalent to
41 days) and traveled 4,297
miles on calls. Among the
responses were 11 automobile
accidents, 3 fire calls, and 282
emergency transportations.
The total number of calls
for the year at the end of
April was 1,536.
During April, the Wayne
First Aid Squads ambulances,
ambulance bus, and personnel
responded to the So Big Day
Care Center in Pequannock
at the request of Morris
Countys Task Force. The bus
was available for triage and
possible transport of the 42
children and staff members
who were victims of the car-
bon monoxide situation.
Fortunately, none of the
patients inhaled serious
amounts of the deadly gas.
The ambulance bus is a
unique vehicle that can be
used to triage, treat, and trans-
port patients if needed. Since
its arrival in mid-2012, the bus
has responded to 32 incidents
including those in Hurricane
Sandy. The bus will be at the
First Aid Station on Wayne
Day, June 8th, at Wayne
Valley High School, and resi-
dents are invited to stop by
and take a tour of the bus.
Her L.Y.S.-L.O.I.s all deliv-
ered identically the same mes-
sage.
Jimmy if youre read-
ing this, I must be incapacitat-
ed or dead. Call Mark
Charnet for help and guidance
immediately, his number is:
973-831-4424.
And that is exactly what
Jim did. I was there to help
him when his head was filled
with emotion, sorrow and
remorse, confused further by
the funeral obligations. Jim
was in need of a financial
friend on retainer at no cost
for life, just like his mother
had, and I was there for her
and Bob and now Jim the son
and Jims children as well.
Let me pause to ask you a
few questions. Do you have a
financial friend on retainer at
no cost for life? Do you have a
name to put on your own
Little Yellow Sticky-Letter of
Instruction to be there to help
your spouse and or kids after
youre incapacitated or gone?
Do you have ample life insur-
ance as Martha did to pay all
of her taxes, obligations and
funeral related expenses and
more? Do your kids have a
relationship with your finan-
cial advisor or retirement and
estate planning specialist?
Dont you think its about
time that you answer all of
these questions, yes? Well, I
do and would like to be the
name on your L.Y.S-L.O.I. like
so many of your neighbors.
For 33 years, people have been
putting my name on their
L.Y.S.-L.O.I. after weve
developed a tremendous
financial advisor/client rela-
tionship. I couldnt be more
proud of my American
Prosperity Group family of
clients as they have taken the
steps to Maximize their
income today, while preserv-
ing, protecting and perpetuat-
ing their wealth for tomor-
row. If youve read this far,
please accept my invitation to
attend our free Retirement,
Estate and Long-term Care
workshop program scheduled
for June in Pompton Plains.

tion 24hrs. See you there.

n a study that examined
the impact of sweet and
sour candy on teeth,
researchers tested four brands
of candy that are sweet and
sour: Jolly Rancher, Life
Savers, Mike and Ike, and
Twizzlers.
Upon examination with
microscopes, the researchers
noted that the teeth exposed
to the sour candies had signif-
icant softer enamel than the
teeth exposed to the sweet
ones. The largest erosion in
enamel was seen with the sour
Jolly Ranchers.
According to the
researchers, sour candies have
high levels of citric, fumaric
and malic acids. The first
comes from citrus fruits and
juices, and is common in a
number of real foods and
candy. Fumaric and malic
acids are a bit more hidden,
used not only to make candy
sour but also as additives in
processed foods.
The Minnesota Dental
Association launched a cam-
paign called The Power of
Sour on Your Teeth to
increase awareness of this new
and emerging concern.

D
o you plan on mixing
pleasure with business
on a trip this summer?
Theres no problem from a tax
perspective as long as you fol-
low a basic precept: The pri-
mary purpose of the travel
must be business-related.
Otherwise, youll forfeit valu-
able tax deductions.
On the other hand, if you
stick to the tax itinerary, you
can write off most of your
travel costs even though
youre spending part of the
time on personal pursuits. The
key is to record significantly
more business days than
personal days on the trip.
Example: John Green, a
self-employed individual, flies
cross-country on Monday to
make a presentation to a
client. He is in business meet-
ings Tuesday through
Thursday. On Friday, the
client inks the deal. John
decides to spend the weekend
playing golf and lounging by
the pool. He flies home the
following Monday.
The round-trip airfare
costs John $1,500. He also
incurs $1,400 in lodging
($200 a day) and $800 in
meals ($100 a day) during his
eight-day trip.
On these facts, John
spends six days on business
the two days traveling count
as business days and only
two days on pleasure. So the
trip qualifies as business-relat-
ed travel. He can deduct the
entire airfare as well as five
days lodging and 50% of the
meals attributable to his busi-
ness stay. Result: John deducts
a total of $2,800 ($1,500 air-
fare, $1,000 lodging and $300
meals).
Note that any personal
expenses, such as green fees at
the golf course, are nonde-
ductible. Also, if family mem-
bers accompany you on a trip,
you cant deduct their expens-
es, but your travel may still
qualify as business-related.
Of course, this is just a
brief summary of the pertinent
tax rules. To review the tax
requirements for your travel
plans, check with us before
you hop on board.

B
eing a responsible pet
owner requires a sub-
stantial commitment.
For dog owners, ensuring a
dog is well fed and exercised,
and receives routine medical
care are essential elements of
responsible pet ownership.
People new to dog ownership
may not realize the impor-
tance of early socialization
and training of their new pet.
The American Veteri-
nary Society of Animal
Behavior has outlined the
importance of early puppy
socialization, preferably before
a puppy reaches 12 to 16
weeks of age. This is a period
of important critical develop-
ment, which can help the ani-
mal grow into a well-adjusted
pet.
New pet parents are
encouraged to enroll in a
training class for their puppies
or, at the very least, to expose
their puppies to other animals
and people at an early age.
The experience not only helps
owners develop a strong bond
with their pets but also
enforces positive behavior in a
fun atmosphere. If not social-
ized, dogs may become aggres-
sive or extremely off-put by
other animals and people.
Such dogs run a greater risk of
being surrendered to a shelter.
Although puppies may
not have completed their
entire run of immunizations at
an early age, many vets agree
that early socialization with
other animals outweighs the
risk of contracting an illness.
The benefits of this socializa-
tion include proper interac-
tion with people, off-leash
play to learn boundaries and
bite inhibition with other
puppies.
Young pups are eager
sponges, ready to absorb infor-
mation from their environ-
ment and families. Early stim-
ulation in a fun and support-
ive manner will help prevent
some potential behavioral
problems that can become
more difficult to correct as a
puppy grows into adulthood.
Although it is possible to
teach an old dog new tricks its
much easier to teach dogs
when they are still eager pup-
pies willing to learn.
Barking, biting, digging
and jumping are all behaviors
puppies are likely to engage
in. It is key for pet owners to
discourage these behaviors as
early as possible because it can
lead to a strained relationship
between pet parent and ani-
mal if the dog continues to
engage in these acts into ado-
lescence. Very often dogs are
chastised or surrendered sim-
ply because they were never
taught the proper way to
behave.
It is not necessary to
enroll in a puppy training
class if owners feel confident
in their abilities to train the
dog on their own. Working
with the pet each and every
day for a small amount of time
will gradually drive home the
necessary lessons. Heaping a
large amount of praise on a job
well done will positively rein-
force desired actions. If a
puppy training class is not part
of a dogs upbringing, at-home
training and visits to a dog
park or puppy daycare can
provide the socialization the
dog needs.
Puppies are willing and
able to learn a great deal of
behaviors at an early age.
Responsible pet owners must
set the course for discipline,
socialization and training that
can foster a long and healthy
relationship.

T
he Wayne Lions Club has
been a major supporter of
the Wayne Day Festivities
and we are pleased to do so again
this year.
The Lions have been an
active and important part of the
development of Wayne Day. It was
more than 23 years ago that the
Wayne Lions spearheaded by our
deceased Lion member Harry
Sylvester actively pursued the con-
cept of Wayne Day with the then
Mayor & Town Council.
During these past 23 years
Lion member, Joe Balzarotti, a
charter member of Wayne Day has
held key positions on the board of
directors and has been actively
involved with the ongoing devel-
opment of Wayne Day.
The purpose of Wayne day
was for a day of celebration at
which the townships many service
organizations, religious groups,
municipal services and local mer-
chants could meet to have a day of
enjoyment, make new and become
re-acquainted with friends, as well
as to learn more about the diversi-
ty of the Township of Wayne.
The Wayne Lions are a group
of dedicated volunteers whose pri-
mary purpose is to help those
afflicted with the loss of sight by
providing eyeglasses and medical
assistance World Wide. We are
actively involved locally in volun-
teering our time and donating
money towards the support of
many local causes such as the
Wayne Foundation for the
Handicapped, the First Aid Squad,
the Volunteer Fire Departments,
the Wayne Library, and many local
high school scholarships. Most
recently we have implemented our
early eye sight intervention pro-
gram in most of the preschool pro-
grams in the township of Wayne.
The Lions raise their funds
through their annual Golf Outing,
Super Bowl Raffle, Beefsteak
Dinner Dance as well as our many
other charitable fund raising
efforts.

everal varieties of roses are
thornless or have very few
thorns. Many plant breeders
have developed roses without
thorns, which are particularly safe for
elderly gardeners, gardeners who
have young children or pets or those
who simply do not want to worry
about thorns on their rose bushes.
Smooth Touch roses are a popular
and thorn-free breed of rose devel-
oped in California in the 1960s by
Harvey Davidson. These roses are
touted as 95 to 100 percent free of
thorns. Some of the Smooth
Touch series include, "Ballerina,"
"Moonlight" and "Snowflake." A mod-
erate climber, the "Zephirine
Drouhin," named after the wife of a
French rose enthusiast, is another
popular thorn-free breed of rose.
Several multiflora ramblers that
descended from Asian rose species
also are free of thorns. "Ghislaine
de Feligonde," "Veilchenblau,"
"Goldfinch," and "Ice Tea" are others
that feature thorn-free canes and
stems.

id you know: The con-
tinental United States
has warmed by about
1.3oF over the last 100 years,
although observers say the
impact has been experienced
differently from region to
region. As a result, meteorolo-
gists are predicting a higher fre-
quency of weather extremes,
such as the two massive wind
and rain systems that collided
last fall during Hurricane
Sandy. On the brighter side,
the home-building industry
says it is already on target for
delivering maximum occupant
protection, pointing to an
energy-saving concrete system
that is popular right now in
green construction. Locking
together like Lego, the pre-
assembled insulated concrete
form (ICF) produces walls with
hurricane and tornado impact-
resistance up to 250 miles per
hour. When compared to
wood, these walls are far more
sound- and fire-resistant and
deliver energy savings and an
improved indoor environment
as well. By eliminating wood
framing, all drafts, cold spots
and potential mold growth are
virtuallyeliminated, according
to leading ICF supplier,
Nudura, who note that home-
owners are reporting savings of
up to 70 percent on their ener-
gy bills. Make a note that an
upgrade to concrete walls needs
to be requested before con-
struction begins. For builders,
the newest efficiencies of this
type require keeping up with
latest technology and how to
apply it. The switch to con-
crete walls represents just one
of the major advancements in
home construction today and
more information is available
online at www.nudura.com.

Construction Quick Tip: Build an eco-friendly home to withstand extreme weather
that unearthed a copper mine.
In 1837, the residents of
Wayne found themselves in
Manchester Township in the
newly named Passaic County.
Finally, on April 12, 1847
the first Wayne Township
organization meeting was held
at the Henry Casey House on
the Paterson Hamburg
Turnpike. The first mayor,
called the Chairman of the
Township Committee until
1962, was William S.
Hogencamp. The Citizens
voted to name the town for the
dashing hero of the revolution,
General Anthony Wayne.
Throughout the 18th and
19th Centuries, Wayne
Township was a peaceful farm-
ing community. It had its share
of grist, saw and cider mills, as
well as blacksmith shops.
Family wills and documents
show evidence of local slavery
on the farmsteads. Gradual
abolition of slavery in New
Jersey began in 1804, but the
practice continued under the
name of apprenticeship until
the federal government abol-
ished it in 1865 by the
Thirteenth Amendment to the
United States Consti-tution.
There were few local indus-
tries. Some iron was mined,
and brick yards made use of
rich deposits of clay.
Gunpowder was made by the
firm of Laflin and Rand on
Ryerson Avenue.
The Morris Canal ran
through the southwestern part
of Wayne carrying produce to
market and coal from
Pennsylvania. The canal was
replaced by the railroad at the
end of the 19th Century. One
railroad car could carry more
than a canal boat and be used
the year round. Season freez-
ing of the canal limited its
use. The railroad brought
vacationers, as well as produce,
in the early 20th century. In
the summer hordes of people
from Manhattan and Brooklyn
came to live in the summer
bungalows and enjoy the beau-
tiful rivers.
World War II made
tremendous change to
Wayne. Summer bungalows
were converted to year round
living residences to accommo-
date the people moving here to
work in war related indus-
tries. Following the war, farm-
land was converted to residen-
tial living. The growth of
Wayne resulted in a new form
of government in the
1960s. A mayor, council, busi-
ness administrator type of gov-
ernment was instituted in
1962. An antiquated postal
system was modernized by an
energetic leadership of the
local Chamber of Commerce.
Modern highways have
made Wayne Township a virtu-
al crossroad in North
Jersey. Routes 23, 46 and 80
and the Paterson Hamburg
Turnpike have made Wayne
easily accessed for business and
homes. Several national firms
have located here.
Education instruction
began in Wayne in a dugout
school near Brandon Avenue.
Legend says Anthony Wayne
sheltered his horse here during
the Revolution. Today
Waynes excellent schools
number nine elementary, three
middle and two senior high
schools in addition to several
private schools for all ages.
The first religious house
of worship was the Preakness
Reformed Church, although
now there are many in number
and denomination.
Wayne has six historic
houses that are on the State
and National Registers:
Schuyler-Colfax House, Dey
Mansion, Van Riper-Hopper
House, Mead-Van Duyne
House, Van Saun House and
Ryerson House. In addition,
there are twenty historically
significant sites.
Over the years Wayne has
had nationally known individ-
uals as residents: namely Albert
Payson Terhune, the famous
writer of collie dog books;
Cecil DeMille, the movie
mogul; and LeGrand Parish,
the inventor of the
Westinghouse air brake, a cou-
pling device, and fire brick
boxes.
Another national celebri-
ty was the Preakness horse.
Purchased in 1868 by Milton
Holbrook Sandford, owner of
the Preakness Stables at the
corner of Valley Road and
Preakness Avenue, for
$4,000. On his maiden start,
Preakness was entered into the
Dinner Plate Stakes at the
new Pimlico race Track in
Maryland. Preakness won the
first race on October 25th,
1870. In 1873 the Maryland
Jockey Club started a new rac-
ing classic for three year olds
and named it The Preakness
in honor of the first horse to
win a race at Pimlico.
Today Wayne offers many
things for people of all ages;
nursery schools, excellent ele-
mentary and secondary
schools, churches for all faiths,
an excellent modern library,
convenient shopping centers,
swimming pools, lakes and
organized recreation for all to
provide quality living for
todays citizens.

ighter fare is more popu-
lar when the weather
warms up, as many peo-
ple dont want to feel weighed
down by their diet. Fish is a
popular summertime meal for
many reasons, not the least of
which is that fish tends to be
light but still flavorful. In addi-
tion, many meals featuring fish
can be whipped up rather
quickly.
Such is the case with the
following recipe for Grilled
Garlic Shrimp with a Fresh
Heirloom Tomato Sauce from
Laurey Mastertons The Fresh
Honey Cookbook (Storey
Publishing). Fresh and simple,
this meal can be enjoyed as a
change of pace at summer bar-
becues or simply as a light week-
night meal with the family.
Grilled Garlic Shrimp with a
Fresh Heirloom Tomato Sauce
Serves 6
For the marinated shrimp:
cup extra-virgin olive oil
cup red wine vinegar
2 garlic cloves, minced
36 large shrimp, peeled and
deveined
12 6-inch wooden skewers
For the tomato sauce:
3 pounds assorted large heirloom
tomatoes
1 small sweet onion, minced
1 garlic clove, minced
teaspoon sea salt
teaspoon freshly ground black
pepper
1 tablespoon honey, preferably
sourwood honey
cup fresh basil leaves, cut into
thin strips (chiffonade is the for-
mal name for this cut), plus
more for garnish
Sea salt
Freshly ground black pepper
1. To marinate the shrimp,
combine the olive oil, red
wine vinegar and garlic in a
large bowl. Stir to combine.
Add the shrimp and allow to
sit, covered, for 1 hour. Stir
occasionally.
2. Prepare a medium fire in a
charcoal or gas grill. Soak the
skewers in water for at least 30
minutes to prevent them from
burning.
3. To make the tomato sauce,
bring a medium pot of water
to a boil. Place one or two
tomatoes at a time into the
boiling water. Watch them
and, as you see the skin split,
remove with a slotted spoon
and place in a bowl of cool
water. At this point, it will be
very easy to slip off the skins.
4. Cut the peeled tomatoes
into a small dice. Put the cut
tomatoes into a large bowl.
Add the onion, garlic, salt,
pepper, and honey. Stir gently
to combine.
5. Skewer the shrimp, 3 per
skewer. Grill the skewered
shrimp for 1 to 2 minutes on
each side, until they are pink.
Sprinkle lightly with sea salt
and a couple grinds of fresh
pepper.
6. Just before serving, add the
basil leaves to the tomato
sauce. Taste and add more salt
if necessary.
7. Ladle the tomato sauce
onto a serving platter and
arrange the skewers on top of
the sauce. Garnish with more
basil leaves and enjoy!
