0 Introduction
A computer network is a group of interconnected computers. Networks may be classified
according to a wide variety of characteristics. This article provides a general overview of some
types and categories and also presents the basic components of a network. Computer network is a
collection of computers and devices connected to each other. The network allows computers to
communicate with each other and share resources and information. The Advanced esearch

the world in late 1*+0s and early 1*,0s.
Communication is the process of transferring information from one source to another.
Communication is commonly defined as %the imparting or interchange of thoughts- opinions- or
information by speech- writing- or signs. Communication can be perceived as a two.way process
in which there is an e/change and progression of thoughts- feelings or ideas towards a mutually
accepted goal or direction. Communication as an academic discipline has a long history.
Communication is a process where by information is encoded and imparted by a sender to a
receiver via a channel0medium. The receiver then decodes the message and gives the sender a
feedback. Communication re1uires that all parties have an area of communicative commonality.
There are auditory means- such as speaking- singing and sometimes tone of voice- and nonverbal-
physical means- such as body language- sign language- paralanguage- touch- eye contact- by
using writing.
2.0 3obile Computing
2.1 )efinition
3obile Computing is a generic term describing your ability to use technology 4untethered4- that is
not physically connected- or in remote or mobile #non static$ environments. The term is evolved
in modern usage such that it re1uires that the mobile computing activity be
connected wirelessly to and through the internet or to and through a private network. This
connection ties the mobile device to centrally located information and0or application software

through the use of battery powered- portable- and wireless computing and communication
devices.
This includes devices like laptops with wireless 5AN or wireless 6AN technology-
smart mobile phones- wearable computers and !ersonal )igital Assistant #!)As$ with 7luetooth
or I)A interfaces. 3obile computing also defined as generic term describing one4s ability to
use technology while moving as opposed to portable computers- which are only practical for use
while deployed in a stationary configuration.

:.0 Internet Technology and (ervices
:.1 FoI!
FoI! stands for Foice Aver Internet !rotocol and it is also known as Internet Telephony. If you
have high.speed Internet #cable0)(5- 5AN$ on your computer- you can connect your phone to
your computer and make calls that way. (o- you are basically making telephone calls over your
computer. Kou must have a special adapter for this to work- but when you do- you plug your
phone line into the adapter instead of plugging it into the wall "ack. The adapter is then plugged
into your Internet modem- which allows FoI! to convert the voice signal from the phone line
into a data that is able to travel over the Internet.
The cool thing is- you still use your phone the e/act same way. Kou will hear a dial tone
and you dial out "ust like normal. Bust with FoI!- everything is combined into one function.
Incoming calls will also ring "ust like normal. The main reason you might decide to invest in this
new technology system is to save you money in the long run. FoI! services cost appro/imately
L20 to L:0 a month- plus you4re not paying for a phone line and Internet connection separately
anymore. The FoI! plans usually also include local and long distance calling- while some even
provide international calling.

A blog #a contraction of the term weblog$ is a type of website- usually maintained by an
individual with regular entries of commentary- descriptions of events- or other material such as
graphics or video. &ntries are commonly displayed in reverse.chronological order. %7log% can
also be used as a verb- meaning to maintain or add content to a blog.
3any blogs provide commentary or news on a particular sub"ectM others function as more
personal online diaries. A typical blog combines te/t- images- and links to other blogs- 6eb
pages- and other media related to its topic. The ability for readers to leave comments in an
interactive format is an important part of many blogs. 3ost blogs are primarily te/tual- although
some focus on art #artlog$- photographs #photoblog$- sketches #sketchblog$- videos #vlog$- music

short posts.

?.0 Types of Network
?.1 !AN
A personal area network #!AN$ is a computer network used for communication among computer
devices #including telephones and personal digital assistants$ close to one4s person. The devices
may or may not belong to the person in 1uestion. The reach of a !AN is typically a few meters.
!ANs can be used for communication among the personal devices themselves #intrapersonal
communication$- or for connecting to a higher level network and the Internet #an uplink$.
!ersonal area networks may be wired with computer buses such as '(7 and 8ire6ire. A
wireless personal area network #6!AN$ can also be made possible with network technologies
such as Ir)A- 7luetooth- '67- N.6ave and Nig7ee.
?.2 F!N
F!N stands for %Firtual !rivate Network.% #Not a competitor of '!N$. This is a network term
that most computer users don4t need to know- but at least you can impress your friends by talking
about it. A F!N refers to a network that is connected to the Internet- but uses encryption to
scramble all the data sent through the Internet so the entire network is %virtually% private. 8or
e/ample- a large company that has offices in multiple locations may need to send data to the
different locations via the Internet. To keep the information secure- the company might first set
up a F!N with an encrypted connection. It4s basically like having a secure Intranet over the
Internet.
?.: 65AN
A wireless 5AN #65AN$ is a wireless local area network that links two or more computers or
devices using spread.spectrum or A8)3 modulation technology based to enable communication
between devices in a limited area. This gives users the mobility to move around within a broad
coverage area and still be connected to the network. 8or the home user- wireless has become
popular due to ease of installation- and location freedom with the gaining popularity of laptops.
!ublic businesses such as coffee shops or malls have begun to offer wireless access to their
customersM some are even provided as a free service. 5arge wireless network pro"ects are being
Page 8 of 10
put up in many ma"or cities; New Kork City- for instance- has begun a pilot program to cover all
five boroughs of the city with wireless Internet access.
?.? 6i3AH
6i3AH- short for 6orldwide Interoperability for 3icrowave Access- is a technology that
allows wide area high.speed wireless broadband. 6i3AH can be deployed over great distances
to connect users to data services- like the internet- wirelessly. Currently- 6i3AH hasn4t seen
wide deployment across the 'nited (tates- though wireless provider (print has recently launched
its HA<3 network based on 6i3AH in 7altimore- 3). A consortium of companies- however-
has banded together to release widespread 6i3AH access under the name Clearwire. 6i3AH
shares few technical similarities with the similarly named technology 6i8i. 6I3AH is a
telecommunications technology that provides wireless transmission of data using a variety of
transmission modes- from point.to.multipoint links to portable and fully mobile internet access.
>.0 Conclusion
3obile computing #like the peer to peer transaction model did$ brings about a new paradigm of
distributed computing in which communication may be achieved through wireless networks and
Page 9 of 10
users can compute even as they relocate from one support environment to another. The impact of
mobile computing on systems design goes beyond the networking level and directly effects data
management. Although being a relatively new area- mobile data management has attracted a lot
of research efforts- motivated by both a great market potential and by many challenging research
problems .
