An Introduction to Apologetics

The word "apologetics" comes from the Greek word "apologia," pronounced, "ap-ol-og-
ee-ah." It means, "a verbal defense." It is used eight times in the New Testament !cts
""#$ "%#&$ # 'or. ()$ " 'or. *##$ +hil. #$*$ " Tim. ,#&, and # +et. )#%. -ut it is the
last verse that is most commonl. associated with 'hristian apologetics.
"....but sanctif. 'hrist as /ord in .our hearts, alwa.s being read. to make a defense to
ever.one who asks .ou to give an account for the hope that is in .ou, .et with gentleness
and reverence" 0# +et. )#%, N!1-2.
"!pologetics is the work of convincing people to change their views."
Therefore, 'hristian apologetics is that branch of 'hristianit. that deals with answering
an. and all critics who oppose or 3uestion the revelation of God in 'hrist and the
-ible. It can include stud.ing such sub4ects as biblical manuscript transmission,
philosoph., biolog., mathematics, evolution, and logic. -ut it can also consist of simpl.
giving an answer to a 3uestion about 5esus or a -ible passage. The latter case is b. far the
most common and .ou dont have to read a ton of books to do that.
!pologetics can be defensive and offensive. +hil. #* gives us instruction on the
defensive side, "6or it is onl. right for me to feel this wa. about .ou all, because I have
.ou in m. heart, since both in m.
"
imprisonment and in the defense and confirmation of
the gospel, .ou all are partakers of grace with me." " 'or. #7%-& gives us instruction on
the offensive side, "8e are destro.ing speculations and ever. loft. thing raised up
against the knowledge of God, and we are taking ever. thought captive to the obedience
of 'hrist." The apologist can and should defend his reasons for believing 0# +et. )#%2.
-ut he can also go on the attack. 9e can seek out those who oppose 'hristianit. 0" 'or.
#7%2. :f course, he should be prepared to do this beforehand, and all apologetics is to be
done with gentleness.
!pologetics is the work of convincing people to change their views. In this, it is similar
to preaching because its goal is ultimatel. the defense and presentation of the validit. and
necessit. of the gospel. It is an attempt to persuade the listener to change his beliefs and
life to conform to biblical truth and to come to a saving relationship in 'hrist.
-asicall. apologetics can be evidential 0often called "classical"2 or presuppositional.
;vidential apologetics deals with the evidence for 'hristianit. 5esus resurrection, the
biblical manuscripts, fulfilled prophec., miracles, etc. +resuppositional apologetics deals
with the presuppositions of those who oppose 'hristianit., because presuppositions affect
how a person views evidence and reason.
1ome areas of debate within 'hristian apologetics deal with the use of evidence, reasons,
philosoph., etc. 1hould the apologist use onl. those criteria acceptable to unbelievers<
!re we allowed to use the -ible as a defense of our position or must we prove
'hristianit. without it< Is reason alone sufficient to prove God=s e>istence or
'hristianit.s truth< 9ow much should reason and evidence be used in light of the
1criptures= teaching that it is God who opens the mind to understand< 8hat part does
pra.er, using the -ible, and the sinful nature of the unbeliever pla. in witnessing< 9ow
do these factors interrelate to bring an unbeliever to faith< The 3uestions are eas.. The
answers are not.
5esus chose one highl.-educated religious person as an apostle. That was +aul. The rest
were fishermen, a ta> collector, a doctor, etc. The. were normal people of the da. who
were available and willing to be used b. the /ord. The. were filled with the 1pirit of God
and the. were used as vessels of God. God uses all things for 9is glor.. 1o, we do
apologetics b. faith.
The /ord has called ever. 'hristian to be read. to make a defense of his faith. That
means .ou are called to give reasonable answers to 3uestions regarding 'hristianit..
Now, this does not mean that .ou must have a +h.?. or that .ou have to go to seminar..
-ut it does mean that .ou should be willing to at least give an answer for .our beliefs. If
.ou find .ou cannot, then pra.erfull. take it to God and start stud.ing.
What do you study?
@ou could pra. and ask the /ord to teach .ou what 9e wants .ou to know. !sk 9im to
give .ou a burden for something to learn. It doesnt matter what it is. 5ust ask. 8hatever
.ou become interested in is what .ou should learn about because it is probabl. something
God wants .ou to know for later use. It is like having tools in a tool shed. The more .ou
have, the more .ou can accomplish.
!nother wa. to find out what God wants .ou to stud. is through circumstances. /ets sa.
that a 5ehovahs 8itness comes to .our door and debates the deit. of 'hrist with .ou and
.ou find .ou dont know how to defend it biblicall.. In that case, .ou know .ou need to
stud. biblical verses that teach 5esus is God in flesh. :r ma.be a coworker asks .ou how
.ou know the -ible is true< If .ou dont have a answer, pra., and start researching. Go
to a 'hristian bookstore and get some books on the sub4ect. Talk to .our pastor. @oull
learn.
1ometimes God will make a verse or sub4ect in the -ible "come alive" to .ou and it
might strike .ou as odd or interesting. @ou could get a commentar. and read up on it.
@ou could ask others about it. In so doing, .ou are preparing .ourself through learning to
be read. to answer 3uestions and point people to the truth. @ou=d be surprised how man.
details God can use to help .ou in .our witness, even through those apparentl. odd times
when verses suddenl. "come alive."
An illustration of what apologetics really
is

!pologetics is somewhat of a lonel. endeavor. It is possible for a person to give a great
deal of effort to apologetic work, to defending Gods word, to answering 3uestions, to
reasoning with people and have it all seem as though it was worthless. ?iscouragement is
a realit. to the apologist. There are certainl. victories, b. Gods grace, but there are man.
encounters that could simpl. be classified as "unprofitable."
To help .ou keep .our e.es on the real issue of apologetics, I offer the following
illustration. The idea is to get .ou to understand what .our 4ob is as an apologist, as
someone who answers 3uestions and ob4ections, and points people to 5esus. I believe that
if .ou understand where .ou are and what .our A4ob is, then .ou wont be as overcome
with discouragement as .ou might otherwise be.
Apologetics is like . . .
!pologetics is like a field. In the center of the field is a garden. This garden has one door,
and that door is 5esus. There is one path that leads to that door. Inside the garden is
eternal life in the presence of God. :utside the field, however, are rocks, boulders,
thorns, thistles, valle.s, hills, and man. false paths that lead nowhere.
The apologist resides in the field and points people to the true path so the. can find the
Garden. The apologist seeks to remove the intellectual thorns and emotional rocks that
prevent people from finding the true path to God. !lso, there are man. people who are
walking false paths 0cults, philosophies, etc.2 who will never reach that Garden. The
apologist gentl. guides the person, removes the obstacles, and points in the direction of
the Garden. 8hen people arrive there, it is between them and God as to whether or not
the. enter.
+icture .ourself as a laborer in the field. It isnt .our 4ob to save an.one. It is .our 4ob to
point the wa.. @ou arent the onl. one in the field. Getting them to the Garden is not .our
4ob. The. get there. @ou simpl. help them.

Eight reasons why we need apologetics
There are several reasons wh. we need apologetics. The first and most obvious is
because we are commanded to defend the faith # +eter )#% sa.s, "but sanctif. 'hrist as
/ord in .our hearts, alwa.s being read. to make a defense to ever.one who asks .ou to
give an account for the hope that is in .ou, .et with gentleness and reverence."
Second, we need apologetics because it helps 'hristians know their faith. This is
something that is sadl. lacking among believers. Bost don=t know much about their
faith, let alone be able to describe the Trinit., the two natures of 'hrist, 9is ph.sical
resurrection, or even be able to tell the difference between 4ustification and
sanctification. !pologetics helps to define and defend what the truth of the gospel is.
Third, apologetics is an attempt to keep people out of hell. God takes sin ver. seriousl.,
and 9e will punish those who have rebelled against 9im and are not covered in the blood
of 'hrist. !s 'hristians, we should be motivated to present the truth of salvation in
5esus. 8e should not sit idl. b. and ignore the dilemma of the unbeliever. 8e need to
tell them that sin is real because God is real, and that breaking God=s law has a
conse3uence. 1ince we have all sinned, we cannot keep God=s /aw perfectl.. !lso, we
cannot undo the offense to an infinitel. hol. God because we are not infinite or hol., so
the onl. thing left for us is to fall under the 4udgment of God. -ut God has provided a
wa. for us to escape that 4udgment. That is wh. God became man in 5esus. 9e claimed
to be God, 05ohn C",,%C$ compare with ;>odus )#,2. 5esus bore our sins in 9is bod.
on the cross, 0# +et. "",2. -. trusting in 'hrist for the forgiveness of our sins, we will
be spared from the rightful 4udgment of God upon the sinner. 1alvation is not found in
-uddhism, Islam, relativism, or in one=s self. It is onl. found in 5esus and we need to not
onl. defend God=s word and truth, but also to present the gospel to all people so the. can
escape the 4udgment to come.
Fourth, we need apologetics to counter the bad image that 'hristianit. has received in
the media and in culture. Televangelists and their scandals, both se>uall. and monetaril.,
are a disgrace to 'hristianit.. The 'atholic church hasn=t helped with its scandals
involving priests. :n top of that, a media is ver. biased against 'hristianit. and .ou will
see negative opinions of 'hristianit. promoted ever.where.
Fifth, we need apologetics because there is a constant threat of apostas. in the visible
'hristian church. 1uch is the case with the Betropolitan 'ommunit. 'hurch
denomination, which openl. advocates the support of homose>ualit. in violation of
scripture 0Dom. ##C-)"2. !lso, as of "77", the ;vangelical /utheran church is in risk of
apostas. b. entertaining the idea of accepting homose>ual relationships into church.
"The Enited 'hurch of 'hrist set up a F%77,777 scholarship fund for ga. and lesbian
seminarians 6rida. and urged wider acceptance of homose>uals b. other denominations."
0Enited 'hurch Bakes Ga. 1cholarship, '/;G;/!N?, 5une #&, "777, !+ :nline via
':BT;H2. :r "The supreme court of the Enited Bethodist 'hurch was asked Thursda.
to reconsider the denomination=s ban on ga. clerg.. 0Church court of United Methodists
asked to decide on gay clergy ban, N!19GI//;, Tennessee, :ct. "%, "77#, !+
8orld1tream via ':BT;H2. 1uch e>amples are demonstrations of the incredible need
for defending biblical truth within those churches that claim to be 'hristian.
Sixth, another reason we need apologetics is because of the man. false teachings out
there. Bormonism teaches that God used to be a man on another world, that he brought
one of his goddess wives with him to this world, that the. produce spirit offspring that
are born into human babies, and that .ou have the potential of becoming a god of .our
own world. The 5ehovah=s 8itnesses teach that there is no Trinit., that 5esus is Bichael
the !rchangel, that there is no hell, and that onl. #,,,777 people will go to heaven.
!theism denies God=s e>istence, openl. attacks 'hristianit. and is gaining ground in
public life and schools. Islam teaches that 5esus was not God in flesh, that 5esus did not
rise from the dead, and that 9e did not atone for our sins. It teaches that salvation is
partl. based on one=s works and partl. based on !llah=s grace. It teaches that the 9ol.
1pirit is the angel Gabriel 01urah "(*$ #&#7"2$ that 5inn are unseen beings, created
0%#%&2 from fire 0#%"*$ %%#%2$ and that Buhammed was greater than 5esus. ;ven
within the 'hristian church, there are false teachings. 8e can see that from both within
the 'hristian church and from outside of it, false teachings are bombarding believers 0and
non believers2 all over the world.
Seventh, the rise of immoralit. in !merica is a threat not onl. to societ. but also to
'hristianit.. This is a serious issue because an immoral societ. cannot last long. The
-arna Desearch group statistics show that &,I of adults and C)I of teenagers said moral
truth depends on the situation that .ou are in. #(I of the adult population believes that
"the whole idea of sin is outdated." %#I believe that "if a person is generall. good, or
does enough good, he will earn a place in 9eaven."
8hen a societ.=s morals fail, the societ. fails. 5ust look at histor. and think of !ncient
Dome, !ncient Greece or present da. ;nron, 8atergate, and 8hite 9ouse interns.
Immoralit. seeps down into all areas of our culture. 'onsider this In the New York
Times, online, of Ba. #", "77", in the article "8ith Games of 9avoc, Ben 8ill -e
-o.s," the author, 8arren 1t. 5ohn, interviews some pla.ers of what he sa.s is a ver.
popular video game. :ne .oung man sa.s, "8hat I like to do is get in the car and drive
around and do drive-b. shootings. @ou can haul someone out of their car and beat on
them and steal their mone. and their car. It=s kind of amusing that .ou have that
abilit.." .... ! publicist from /ong Island sa.s the game=s allure comes down to "4ust
going on killing sprees." Not all video games are violent, but the fact that it is so popular
and that the .outh are being trained up b. them is ver. disturbing.
I am not advocating a theocratic socio-political rule administered b. stern 'hristians
wearing black-and-white outfits and tall hats. -ut these kinds of social trends are
disturbing, and the. reflect a moral decline in !merica, where what is good is called evil
and what is evil is called good. God tells us in +hil. ,C, Finally, brethren, whatever is
true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely,
whatever is of good repute, if there is any ecellence and if anything worthy of praise, let
your mind dwell on these things! 8e cannot ignore God=s word without a conse3uence.
The eighth reason we need apologetics is because schools are not friendl. to
'hristianit.. B. own e>perience in non-'hristian schools was a strong awakening to the
unprovoked hostilit. that e>ists in school, where the philosoph. teachers, histor. teacher,
and even the art teacher all took shots at 'hristianit.. ?on 6eder in the Conservative
Chronicle, in his article of 1ept. "", #((), titled "6ighting 'ensorship, +!8 ?oes it Its
8a.," said that in some 4unior high libraries, book titles included The "oy of #ay $e and
%ow to Make &ove to a $ingle 'oman. There is an impressions series for grades one to
si> which promote the New !ge and the occult$ a controversial drug education program
called Juest, which tells students that the. alone can decide whether or not it=s :K to use
drugs$ as well as te>ts that direct students to fantasiLe about suicide, attack religion and
undermine famil. authorit.. 6ollowing is an email I received that represents the hostilit.
of secular schools.
:ur daughter had ac3uired an atheist=s heart since leaving home and attending college. It
seems that the books in college breed atheists, because the. are full of the philosoph. of
anti-God thinking. 1he has been in college for four .ears now, and one of the last times
we had a chance to talk to her, she said that she doesn=t think about sin, or heaven, or hell
an.more because, according to her, the. do not e>ist. 1he said that when she was .oung
and asked the /ord to come into her heart, she did not know what she was doing because
children do what the. are told.
The fact is that 'hristianit. is under attack in the world and we need to fight the good
fight of the faith without shrinking back. 8e need apologetics to give rational,
intelligent, and relevant e>planations of 'hristian viabilit. to the critics and the
pre4udiced who would seek to undermine the teachings of our /ord 5esus.
If there was ever a time that apologetics is needed, it is now.
rayer in Apologetics
:ne of the dangers of the apologist is falling into the trap of rel.ing on his own
intellectual abilities to tr. and wrestle someone into the kingdom of God. I am sad to sa.
that I have been guilt. of this.
+ride hides itself in the heart so it cannot be seen. 8hen we find ourselves rel.ing on our
knowledge instead of God=s word, merc., and grace, then we have fallen into that trap. It
is not reason that converts, but God=s 1pirit. It is not logic that draws us to God but 5esus
05ohn #")"2. It is not evidence that convicts a person of his sins, but the 9ol. 1pirit
05ohn #&C2. That is wh. we need to rel. on God and trust that 9e will use our defense of
the truth for 9is glor. and their benefit.
To ignore pra.er in apologetics is to be prideful. It is the same as sa.ing we don=t need
God. -ut we do. 8e need to pra. for those who are lost, pra. for their minds to be
opened, pra. that God=s word will ring true to them, pra. that our witness will be strong,
and pra. that the evil one will not have a foot-hold with them or with us. 8e are fighting
a spiritual battle and need spiritual tools. +ra.er is perhaps the most important of them
all.
It is the /ord who opens the heart and mind, not .ou 0!cts #&#,2. !sk God for guidance
05ohn #,#,2. !sk for blessing in .our understanding 05ames #%2 and .our speech 0'ol.
,&2. !sk the /ord to also open their understanding to God=s word 0/uke ",,%2. This is
what 9e does.
+ra.er brings humilit. to the one pra.ing. It admits dependence on God. If we are
humble and depend on God, we are more likel. to hear 9is voice. +ra.er means that .ou
are seeking divine intervention. It works power to .our words. It changes .our heart. It
moves .ou closer to God.
-eing a great apologist is not a badge of honor to be worn b. the 'hristian as a
demonstration of his intellectual abilities. Dather, it is a response to the calling of God
upon all 'hristians 0# +et. )#%2 that is be undertaken with love and humilit. love of
people and humilit. before God.
Never let .our stud. and practice of apologetics replace the power, received b. faith, in
pra.er before the 9ol. 'reator. !sk God to empower .our words and open the hearts of
those with whom .ou speak.... and then stud. and witness to the best of .our abilities.

!erses to "e"ori#e
6ollowing is a list of verses I use in apologetics. I don=t have all of them memoriLed.
I suggest that .ou first remember the location of the verse, i.e., Gen. ##, then either
memoriLe the entire verse or what it is basicall. about.
