Online Arabic Self-diagnostic Test
Dear test takers,
Welcome to the Arabic Program at The Monterey Institute of International Studies
(MIIS). This test aims at assessing your levels of proficiency in Arabic. The test
includes three sections: Reading, Grammar, and Vocabulary. To ensure your
understanding of the test questions, all the instructions have been provided in
English, with some other notes in English throughout the test. Please read the
instructions carefully at the beginning of each question. The test should take
approximately 110 minutes.
Following the test is a key with all the test answers and an evaluation system to
assess your language level. However, please be ware that this placement is not final
and is pending MIIS placement test and oral proficiency interview.
Good luck!

Section I: Reading (40 Points) Each question has two points.

Read the texts below and answer the questions that follow by circling the letter of
the correct option !, ", #, or $. The first question after each text asks about the
general idea of the passage. The rest of the questions ask about information that are
directly stated in the passage of inferred from it.

Section II: Grammar (25 points) In questions I and II, each item (space) has
point and in question III, each item has 1 point.
I. Circle the word/phrase that accurately completes the following sentences. The
dotted line shows you where the word/phrase goes in the sentence. A lot of the
sentences are in the form of conversations between ! and ". Therefore, it will help
you to read the whole conversation in an item first to be able to determine the
answer correctly. An example has been provided for you in the beginning.

III. Each of the following sentences has four underlined words/phrases, each of
which is assigned a letter. You need to circle the letter of the underlined
word/phrase which needs to be changed to make the sentence grammatically correct.
The mistake could be in the choice of the word, the word form, or the word voweling.
After you circle the incorrect word/phrase, write the correct form in the space
