GROUP IT
Due to todays competitive job market students have no other option but to attempt to gain higher
qualifications. In 2008, 28 percent of the population aged 25 to 39 held a bachelors degree or higher.
1
This
high demand is meaning time is now hard to come by as students have to spend more time on their school
work. Groups Its vision is to enable students in the 21
st
centuary to effectively use their time by streamlinging
their educational resources through the use of technology and information systems. We plan on doing this by
creating a mobile app that will organise all activities into an effective diary style plan. This helping students
prioritise work and ultimately become more organised.
3. BUSINESS SECTION
3.1 Vision
To make a contribution to the world by organising all aspects of a university students life in a way that makes
their lives more constructive and easy to manage, so that they have the time to attain the results they wish.
3.2 Industry Analysis: Student Help Industry
Industry: The Student Help industry exists in order to give students any help or guidence they need during
their studying lives. For a business to prosper in any industry it must be able to gain competitive inteligence
before they enter. To gain a competitive advantage managers often use the Porters Five Force Model.
Force: High/Low: Justification:
Buyer power: High
In this industry buyer power is high as buyers have many choices of whom
to buy from. Examples of companies that provide help for students
include; Study link, Studyit (NCEA help) and all New Zealand universitys
have help desks, councillers and medical help.
Supplier power: Low
In this industry supplier power is low because there are many suppliers
that therefore have limited control over the industry. This is a positive for
businesses within that industry as they can not charge higher prices or
shift costs to industry participants.
Threat of new entrants: High
Threat of new entrants is high in this industry as barriers to entry are low.
This is because it is very easy to help students, a example of this would be
a creation of an app. Appery is an example of a platform with visual
development tools and integrated backend services
2
that can be used to
help students.

Threat of substitutes: High
This is because there are many options for student help. This include a
general calander that come with every phone and websites such as get
organised now, Where Youll get a Treasure Chest of free organizing
resources to help you clear the clutter
3

Rivalry among existing
competitors:
Low
Competition within the industry is relatively low comparitive to other
industries due to the fact that there all working towards the greater good
of the student.
Overall attractiveness of the industry: This industry is mildly attractive but not attractive enough to
enter. Start up and production costs will be low due to weak barriers to entry and low supplier power,
however, competition and buyer power is high, so market share will be small and split between business
which is not desirable. I would not enter the industry as I predict that our business would not be profitable.
3.3 Customers and Thei r Needs
Our target customer are students that hold a smart phone. With 4623605 students attending high school in
2013
4
and 421,764
5
students enrolled in tertiary education in 2013 , there is a large client base available. The
way in which kiwis are accessing the internet is also changing. Over the past three years, the number of
households using more than one device to connect has doubled, from 21 percent to 40 percent. In 2009, the
most popular combination was overwhelmingly a desktop and a laptop. In 2012, this has shifted to a laptop
and a mobile phone.
6
As the trend continues, we predict that the demand for phone based apps is only likely
to increase. Our personal use of mobile Internet has doubled in the last three years, this proving that half of
those who use the Internet are using their mobile
7
. Students are our target market because after researching
we conclude that they are the age demographic struggerling the most with organization. I sent out a survey to
adults aged 50+ that had received all levels of education and had also worked in the job force. Of the
participants surveyed 82% agreed that the time in their lives that they struggled with organization the most
was during high school and university. Our customers need guidence on when and what to study, as well as a
guide on when to sleep and how to exercise so they can work to the best of their ability.
3.4 The Product and Service
Our app will aim to satisfy the needs of our customers. Our customers need an app that will help them
organise their lives. The customer will link our app to the Universtiy of Auckland Cecil page. This causing data
such as class times and assingments to sink onto the app. This information will them be transformed into a
daily timetable. Customers will also be able to insert eating and exercise times so this can be worked into their
scedual as well. This app creates a constructive way to help students become more organized.

When a company is entering the market, it must formulate a strategy for entering. The competitive scope our
company is choosing is a focused market. By focusing only only a segement of the population we can
accurately determine the needs of our clients and met them to a high standard. The cost strategy we are
choosing is low cost due to the presumptions that students are often only wanting to spend money on
necessities. Keeping the price of our good to a minimum will hopefully attract a larger client base. Our overall
strategy is therefore: focused low cost.
3.7 Value Chain Activity: Technology development
The most important value chain activity for this business is: Technology development. Our key value chain
activity is technology delelopment. Technology development applies management information systems (MIS)
to processes to add value. MIS connect people, technologies and procedures, which esentially our app aims to
achieve. The way in which our app plans to organize all aspects of a univesity students life is through
technology development. Without the compination of technology and Information Systems our app and vision
would not be completed
