JACA APPS BUSINESS REPORT
INTRODUCTION
Do you find yourself staring at your smartphone too much? Well, you are not alone. People
Spend too much time on their smartphones and the worst part is that they are not aware of
it! Jaca Apps has come up with an innovative smartphone app that alerts users to the time
they are spending on their smartphones. Users can disable notifications and phone access
during events scheduled on their calendar and request ideas for things to do based on their
location. We hope to make people AWARE of the TIME they spend on their smartphones,
REDUCE the TIME they spend on their smartphones and give them MORE TIME to do the
things that matter.
3. BUSINESS SECTION
3.1 Vision
Create an innovative app to ensure every human being is living in the present moment.
3.2 Industry Analysis: Time-Tracking Smartphone App Industry
Industry: Time-Tracking Smartphone App Industry
Force: High/Low: Justification:
Buyer power: High Multiple products at a range of prices gives
buyers lots of power in this industry to pick and
choose. Eg: My Minutes app-No cost (Srl, 2012)
Toggl-$5 a month (Toggl, 2014)
Supplier power: Low There are numerous suppliers of app
development for this industry which gives this
type of supplier low power as they have little

3

3
control over prices .
Threat of new entrants: Low $50,000 to $150,000 (Stetler,2013) to develop a
complex app and up to 3 months (Formotus,
2013)needed to plan, develop and implement
one makes entrance barriers into the industry
quite high, hence a low threat of new entrants.
Threat of substitutes: High There are many alternative products that
customers can purchase to alert them of or to
help them manage the time spent on their
smartphones. These include day planners
(Whitcoulls, 2014) , phone timers (Apple,2014)
and online time management sites (Rescue Time)
Rivalry among existing
competitors:
High According to Henry, 2011,There is no shortage of
time-tracking apps and with over 1.4 billion
smartphone users around the world (Loveridge,
2013) rivalry is high is this industy among existing
competitors.
Overall attractiveness of the industry: With 3 out of the five forces being strong, entering
into this industry would pose a risk to JACA Apps. Success and profitablitiy in the industry
would be difficult and based on competitive pricing. Therefore the overal attractiveness of
the Time-Tracking Smartphone App Industry is relatively low.
3.3 Customers and Thei r Needs
The target group of customers for JACA App are smartphone users who are concerned
about how much time they spend on their smartphones. According to Frost and Sullivan
(2013) 64% of New Zealanders aged between 15 and 65 currently own a smartphone. We
aim to target those in this group who find themselves distracted from daily activites such as

4

4
study and work, or commitments to family and friends and who feel they are unable to
excape from the clutches of, or rather, from clutching their smartphones.
This group of customers need something to make them aware of the time they spend on
their smartphone, and also something to prevent them from thinking its necessary to pick it
up in the first place. Well over 75% of 145 people said they pull their smartphone out when
bored waiting & check their phone first thing when they wake up (Park, Kevin. 2013). The
target group of JACA Apps needs a product that will free them from their smartphone so
they are present, instead of staring at a screen, in those moments that matter.
3.4 The Product and Service
The JACA App satisfies the needs of our target customer group by notifying users of how
long they have been on their phone while they are using it. Eg: You have been on facebook
for 2 hours, do you want to continue? Yes? No?. Often people dont realise how long they
have been on their smartphone until AFTER they stop using it.
Another feature of the App is that you can disable notifications and phone access during
events scheduled on your phones calendar. If a users phone notifications are turned off
during eg: dinner with the family, they will be less likely to reach for their phone as it wont
buzz or beep , distracting them from the commitment at hand. If access is attmepted
during this time, a notification will remind them of the scheduled event. These features will
help prevent users from picking up their smartphone during important occasions so that
instead, they are fully present.
The App also give users ideas of things to do based on their location if they have spare time
on their hands. This will prevent people from resorting to their smart phone just for
something to do when waiting.

3.6 Strategy: Focused Low Cost Strategy
The Cost Strategy that JACA Apps follows is a Low Cost Strategy as we are providing a very
inexpensive product to our customers.
In addition to a Low Cost Strategy, the Competitive Scope that we are following is a Narrow

3.7 Value Chain Activity: Technology Development (and R&D)
The most important value chain activity for this business is Technology Development (and
R&D). We strive to use innovation to ensure people live in the present so need to be
spending lots of time researching and developing the best way to see this vision through. As
we are offering a low cost product targeted at a narrow market, ensuring our creations suit
the needs for these specific customers is a priority.
3.8 Business Processes
3.8.1. APP RESEARCH AND DESI GN PROCESS Involves researching the target customer
group, evaluating their needs and designing a product that satisfies these needs accordingly.

3.10. 1. VERSION CONTROLL SYSTEM- Tracking the multiple versions of the product designs
ensures that all changes and new ideas are documented and retained; so that we can follow
progress and refer between versions to achieve the most innovative product possible.
3.10. 2. PROTOTYPE TESTI NG SYSTEM Testing functionality and quality of the final prototype
to assess whether the product fulfils its description and satisfies customer needs. Quality
