The 5-6 Assessment Components (Products)

News Flash/Warning!
The numbering of the Parts and the numbering of the assessment
components often creates confusion.
These assessments are listed in this fashion as experience with workshops has shown that
grasping a clear sense of what each candidate must produce, right from the introduction to the
program, gives teachers a sense of the scope of the demands and helps them to choose
appropriate texts for specific parts of the syllabus.

PRODUCT # 1 (May Exam Session/November Exam Session)*
SL Paper 1: Textual Analysis (1 hour 30
minutes) 25%
HL Paper 1: Comparative textual analysis (2
hours) 25%
The paper consists of two unseen texts.
Students write an analysis of one of these
texts (20 marks)

The paper consists of two pairs of unseen texts.
Students write a comparative analysis of one pair
of texts (20 marks).

*The Diploma Programme is studied over two years. Schools in the Northern Hemisphere generally
complete the examinations in May while those in the Southern hemisphere do so in November. Check
with your IB Coordinator about when your school does its final examinations.

Product #2 (May/November)
Paper 2: Essay (2 hours) 25% Paper 2 Essay (2 hours) 25%
In response to one of six questions students
write an essay based on both the literary
texts studied in Part 3. The questions set are
the same at HL but the assessment criteria
are different (25 marks).
In response to one of six questions students

are different (25 marks).

This task must be 800-1000 words in
length plus a rationale of 200-300
words.
Students produce at least four written tasks based on
material studied in the course.
Students submit two of these tasks for external
assessment (20 marks for each task).
