Coffers

By definition coffers are the space in the soffit between the modillions, often containing round or square pateras
(a round ornament in bas relief). Coffers are generally used in the five classical orders with the exception of
Tuscan. The term is also used for deeply recessed panels that are often ornamented as can been seen below.
