TheInternationalProtectionRating,sometimesreferredtoasanIngressProtectionrating,isasetof
codesusedtodefinespecificlevelsofprotection.ThesecodesconsistoftheprefixIP,followedbytwodigits
(numbers),andanoptionalletter.IPratingcodesareclassificationsusedtomeasurelevelsofprotection,such
aspreventingtheintrusionofsolidobjectsandliquidsfromenteringanenclosureormotor.Solidobjects
includebodypartssuchashandsandfingers,aswellasdustanddebris.Liquidsmayinvolveoils,moisture
and/orcondensation.Typically,IPratingsareusedasprotectionmeasuresformotors,electricaldevicesand
controlpanels.Thesestandardsweredesignedtoprovidedesignerswithdetailedinformationregarding
protection.Itisnotadequatetostatesplashproof,waterproof,orwatertight,asinjurytohumansand
equipmentismorelikelytooccurwhenvaguedefinitionsareused.

WhencallingAnaheimAutomationtoreplaceamotor,informationfromthenameplateorlabelofthemotorin
questionishelpful,startingwiththeframenumber.Whatdoesthisframenumbermean?Whenreplacinga
motor,importantmountinginformationisassociatedwiththisnumber.Motorsofthesameframenumber,
regardlessofthemanufacturer,willreplaceanothermotorwiththesameframenumber,aslongasitisthe
sametechnology(i.e.stepper,servo,BLDC,brush,acmotortypes)andthespecificationsmatch.Itisjustoneof
thestandardsoftheNationalElectricalManufacturersAssociation(NEMA).

MotorTemperatureConsiderations

ExternallyVentilatedMotors
Amotorusinganexternalcoolingsystem.Thisisrequiredinapplicationswherethemotor'sownfanwillnot
providesufficientcooling.Thesecoolingsystemsareusedincertaindutycycleapplications,withslowspeed
motors,orinenvironmentswithextremedirt.Oftenaductwithanexternalblowerisusedtobringcleanair
intothemotor'sairintake.

MotorTemperatureSeespecifications,asitwillvarydependingonthemodel
Temperaturehasadirecteffectonamotorsoveralllifeexpectancy.Thesefollowingfactorsshouldbetaken
intoconsiderations,astheywillaffectamotor'soperatingtemperature.Failuretoaddresstheseaspectsofa

permissibletothemotor'sinsulationsystem,reducesitslifeexpectancybyhalf.Bearingorgearlubricant
lifeisreducedbyhalfforevery25degreesF(approximately14degreesC)increaseintemperature.Heat
eventuallycausesdeteriorationofmostlubricantsandsealsleadingtoleakageandincreasedfriction.
MotorInsulationClass
Therearevariousambienttemperatureconditionsamotormightencounteranddifferenttemperatureranges
withinwhichamotorwillrun.Therefore,motorinsulationisalsosensitivetotemperatureandclassifiedbythe
