Lincoln Hall 5M = 1,001
Races f or Joe Handel man
By Katy D. Qiiinn
His tee-shirt says "Run For Life," and that's
certainly tting, because TELRC's Joe Handelman has
surpassed the 1,000 race mark. Undaunted by a torrential
downpour, Joe ran his favorite race distance at Lincoln
Hall and chalked up his 1,001st nish. (The editor
apologizes for reporting last issue that the Sybil 50K was
his 94th race. It should have read 294th!)
As someone who has had the pleasure of running
with Joe, I know that running is important to him, but
certainly not his only interest. Joe nds the camaraderie
of TRRC exceptional, and since he also belongs to four
other road runners' clubs, we're attered! Joe is a fre
quent participant of Saturday morning runs from the
pump house and it is there that I have the good fortune to
talk with him as we jog. I am impressed by his life-long
dedication as a runner, but equally amazed by his rich
and varied interests.
A frequent trophy winner in the 60+ age group
these days, Joe is also excelling in other areas of his life.
A graduate of Princeton University, he hopes to retire in
the not too distant iture from the successful business he
and his family operate. His family has kept him busy
over the years, but his recent move to Katonah is offering
him the oppportunity to relax and enjoy the musical
offerings at Caramoor. (Joe also plays no less than nine
musical instruments.)
I look forward to many more runs with Joe, and
wish him many more great races. You're an inspiration
to all of us!

What Di d I See?!
Saturday morning, May 21, 1994, at 8:30
A.M., I was on my way to Rocky's Deli to rendevous
with three of my running buddies for a trip to Central
Park. Lost in my thoughts, as usual, I found myself
passing the parking place on Route #129 near "The
Pump House." Since it was Saturday morning, my
curiositiy was sitrred, so it was only appropriate that
1 cast a glance toward the parking spot the club uses
to see if there were any cars. And low, what did I
see? None other than 8 cars. Now, I thought
everybody would be in Purchase for "The Human
Race"; and that several cranks were running the
"You Gotta Have Park 5K" in NYC. Obviously not!
I drove on toward Route #100 and then it dawned on
me. What a bunch of di ehards! Taconi c Road
Runners never cease to amaze me. I was impressed.

Summertime, and a young man's thoughts turn
to...Marathon Training (this "Young Man" should be
all encompassing as in MANKIND to include older
young men and, of course, women of all ages), and
the older we get, M or F, we seem to require more
inner questions answered as to why we do this,
especiily in July and August!! Having said that, the
Dutchess Marathon is September 18th, and even the
"1/2" will hurt you a whole bunch should you decide
to start "going-long" on September 1.
So, what's been happening...Teatown's 7K
Rumbl e was i n f or t he f ew wi t h T. C. ' s own brand of
XC/trail mix; it rained on Mother's Day, which was
good for the owers and wet and wild for the
Mudders! North County News - your mug's in the
mail, but worth waiting for - great job Doug/Nick ~
race directing is not for the meek 'n humble of heart!
Thanks for the Prez Cup! Humans gathered and raced
at the 2nd annual 5K at the beautiful world
headquarters of PEPSICO. Special thanks to
MHRRC's Irv Miller, who literally sweat all over the
keyboard for the cause (or was that Coors?!) Joanna
and Rich Nash built an ark for the Lincoln Hall loop
and 125 of us jumped in and chased this bearded guy
with a tall black hat and red polka dot shorts for 5 wet
ones; super singlet debut job. Hey, race directing is
not for ie M 'n H of H. M-P relay will have run
bye, by press time - thanks Myles "one last time."
Rumor has it Coach will R.D. for '95, onward and
upward. The Father Mooney - Mahopac - Putnam
Classic has had more name changes than Liz Taylor,
but unlike Ms. T can still be found at the same time 'n
date for the past 22 years (8 A.M. July 4th) and
distance, the original crazy 8s are back. The Putnam
Savings Bank as our major sponsor is back with C-Tec
TV and, of course, the boys from Sparkles' T-shirts
and all is well - Happy Birthday America! Is this a
great country^ or what!
Up 'N Coming: Depending on when you're
reading this, Lui's own 1st annual Jan Peek 5K is at
8:30 A.M. Sunday, July 10th (the original lOK is
now held on September 4th). The NYRRC Club
Team Championships on July 24th in Central Park
promises to be a "hot one." You can keep cool with
the breezes off Lake Mahopac for the lOK on July
30th. If running around a lake is not cool enough for
you, the Run-Dip Biathlon on August 7th should wet
your whistle. And, because we need to ll in our
schedule in August, on Sunday, the 14th, TRRC (for
the rst time) presents the Phelps Memorial
Hospital 5K. Then, we nish off the month on the
28th with the Somers 10K...and now we can get back
to Marathon Training...I think!!

Racing In New York City
By Scott Abercrombie
The NYRRC Grand Prix Series for '94 is half
over, and they still have not released any individual
race results. NYRRC has only published team point
totals through February. Last year. West Side Y was
very tough to beat, but this year it's Millrose.
TRRC has entered a Men's 40's, Men's 50's,
and Women's Masters team in the Grand Prix, and
Millrose is in rst or second in each of these categories.
Millrose always enters teams in our Manhattan to
Peckskill Relay, and you see a lot of their runners at the
Jan Peek and other Taconic races.
However, our really big concern this year is
scheduling, not the competition. Seven out of the 13
NYRRC races conict with Taconic races, and the
majority of these conicts are with races that are also
part of the Taconic Grand Prix. Not good! This has
caused us to deliberately enter some NYRRC races
with only the minimum number of runners required to
s c o r e .
Anyway, the real purpose of this article is to
encourage everyone to race the 5 mile Club Team
Championship in Central Park on July 24. This one
does not conict with any of our races, and we will be
elding teams in the male and female open, masters and
50*s categories. This has become a bit of an annual
ritual, so we will have out club banner, a keg or two,
and food for after the race. This race is part of the
NYRRC Grand Prix, but it is worth 2-3 times as many
points as the other races in the series. Don't be deterred
by natural ability. Participation matters most, espe
cially if we're going to have a good time in Central
Park. If you are not a NYRRC member, and you enter
on race day, they will kill you with an unacceptably
outrageous entry fee. So, if you need a race applica
tion, call me at 245-7813, and I will send you one.

Mother's Day 5K - A Fun Celebration!
By Joanne Bertram
Many thanks to out to Melanie and Linda for yet another great job on
the Mother's Day race. They arranged perfect weather - not too hot, not too
cold, just enough sun - which brought out lots of moms and a few daughters.
The best part of this race is being able to ask, "Who won?" and get the
answer without have to say, "No, I mean the rst woman."
The only disappointment was that the
weight of all this past winter's snow and ice didn't
atten out the hills.
For any of you mothers or daughters
who haven't tried it, it's a perfect way to begin
this special day, so keep it in mind for next year.

A thought about the joy of running:
But if the dance of the run isn't fun
then discover another dance
because without fun
the good of the run

and a suffering runner
always quits

The partnership of Doug Miller and Nick Caswell worked for the second time. Despite a few setbacks,
the sponsorship and support of The North County News, and the special network of friends and volimteers
made the day successful.
The one setback - and the only issue that needs to be addressed - was the delay in receiving the awards.
The delay was purely administrative and bureaucratic. In fact, the awards were in Yorktown on the day of the
race. Little did anyone realize, the boxes containing the awards were locked away in the UPS depot on Front
Street, a mere 300 yards away from the runners on Hanover Street. Anyway, over half of the awards have now
been given out. The rest will be handed out at either club meetings, at the club races in June/July, or by special
arrangement with me (e.g. collect at Louis' store. Running Plus, in Peekskill.) So, call me (914) 736-0414, and
we'll make arrangements! Congratulations to all the winners, and thank you for your patience!

HEART RATE MONI TORI NG
by Greg Di amond
Heart Rate monitoring as a training aid has recently become more common among non-elite athletes
with the avaiiability of relatively inexpensive and very accurate heart rate monitors (HRM) along with
literature and research to allow knowledgable usage. Your heart rate can be helpful for both training and
racing intelligently.
The best monitors available now (starting under $100) include a transmitter that straps around your
chest and a receiver you wear on your wrist. The strap, if made just tight enough, is comfortable and does
not interfere with running. The receiver is the piece that causes variation in price: minimally it displays just
the pulse; others include a watch and timer; higher models can memorize heart rates and interval times
at variable intervals for playback later. These monitors are actually reading your heart rate not your pulse,
the latter being slightly less accurate.
What to do with these HRMs once you get one is the big question and the answer can be very
detailed, so I will start with the basics and hope to continue in further issues.
The rst two measurements you need are your resting heart rate (RHR) and your maximal heart rate
(MHR). The RHR is measured rst thing in the morning before any activity while you are still in bed. This
can be done using your nger on your wrist or neck (the old fashioned way). After several morning
measurements you should have an idea of your RHR. Upward deviations from this number on future days
would indicate overtraining or sickness and should help you to adjust your running accordingly - such as
taking a day off. Downward trends indicate improved tness.
Next, your need the MHR. This can be estimated with the formula 220 minus your age, (i.e.:such as
180 for a 40 year old.) But this is such a variable number and the necessity for an accurate measurement
is such that the following methods should be tried: Run easily for 1 to 2 miles; run 1/2 mile hard; rest for
30 seconds to 1 minute; run as hard as you can for 1/2 mile. Your pulse at the end is close to your MHR.
Or run a mile race. Or run hard on the roads, nd a long steep hill and run as hard as you can up the hill,
each time noting your pulse immediatedly as you nish the run.
Once you have the MHR and RHR, you can calculate any of a number of heart rate ranges you will
use for various workouts and races. For instance, the optimal heart rate range for long, slow runs is 60-75
percent of your MHR. If you have a MHR of 180 and a RHR of 40, you subtract 40 from 180 (=140), take
60% of that (=84) and add back your RHR for a 60% value of 124. Similarly, 75% is 140x.75-l-40=145.
There are charts available to do this calculation for you. So the range for a long, slow run would be 124-
1 4 5 .
This is one of the most important ranges since most people run their long, slow runs too fast, leaving
them overtrained and unwittingiy undertrained: the long, slow runs are meant to develop certain muscular
attributes (more mitochondria) and a faster tempo doesn't foster these developments. (It also takes several
weeks for the benet of these runs to be reaiized so a iong run 1 week before a marathon is only bad
(tears you down), never good-don't forget this on October 31.)
Ed McLaughlin just ran the Vermont Marathon in even splits (rst half=second half) achieving a 10
minute PR using his HRM to pace himself. Instead of concentrating on a certain mile per minute average
he kept himself in a certain pulse range (85% of MHR) that is known to be best for running a good
marathon. I used one at the Vassar Brother Hospital's 20K race and used a higher percentage of my MRH
because it was a shorter race. Rather than keeping to a minute per mile pace, there were times when I
backed off (even though I felt capable of a faster pace) to keep my pulse in the range I wanted. At times,
while backing off, I allowed myself to lose contact with people running arounj me -a psychological barrier
I had to overcome to run my best race. In the end, I had improved my mid-race position by eight places,
running my best race in a while and still nishing strong and comfortable. Both Ed and I had gured out
the necessary pulse ranges by using the HRM in training. More later...

What Running Means To Me
By Rebecca Gusmano, 1994
TRRC Scholarship Finalist
Runners take your mark. Get set. Bang! I hear the
wind rushing past me as I sprint 800 meters to the nish line.
I think of the runners around me. A voice inside my head
says, "Push yourself harder!" Amazingly, my arms pump
faster and my legs follow through as I cross the fmish line,
achieving my best time and rst place. All the practice has
paid off, and I leave the track with a smile. I run for the
excitement of the race, and for the natural high achieved
when competing with others.
As a freshman, I only thought of running as a means
to stay in shape. Initially, it was difcult to run more than
two miles at a stretch, but as time evolved, running became
an important part of my daily routine.
Running is the perfect sport. There is always a new
goal in sight, and a new race to be run. The competitor is
myself and the race is against the clock.
Running keeps me physically and mentally t. It
relieves the stress of a rigorous academic and work schedule.
When I run, I nd it easier to put things in perspective, and in
doing so, solve many of my problems. Flowers, trees, and
animals scurrying to hide, all enhance the exhilarating feeling
I receive when running on a clear, sunny day. I let my
thoughts wander, feel wonderful, and am glad to be alive.
Running has become the way I dream of the future,
appreciate the present, and review the past. Whenever you
hear the words "Runners, take your mark. . .", try to detect
the inherent joy in that moment, for each runner is about to
challenge themselves and each other.

"Joi ns The Human Race"
May 21
ByKatyD. Quinn
"Family, Fun & Fitness" were the theme of the
day as 8,000 people gathered at PepsiCo Headquarters
in Purehase, NY for a 5K road race and a 5K walk
known as "The Human Race." TRRC clocked in 463
nishers and set to work (with the able assistance of Irv
Miller of MHRRC) scoring the race with a new (to us)
scoring program. Joanna Nash, Annette Einhom Reed
and Fred Loehfelm were also "key" in the computer
scoring. Special thanks also go to Larry Lenahan who
instructed rookies at the water stops; Richie Adamski,
Nancy Young, Carol Hansen, and Kathleen Ford who
kept up with a challenging registration, Steve Quinn, Ed
McLaughlin, Rudi Einhom, and Bob Davis who man
aged the nish line, and Tony Galfano and Rich Nash
for other behind the scenes help. Also, praise to Frank
LoCastro and Mike Moreau of PepsiCo & Pepsi for a
fantastic job of hosting this mamoth event!!!
TRRC saw the coffers of our scholarship fund
replenished with many pledges (specic amount was not
available at press time), and The Volunteer Center of the
United Way, coordinators of the event, report that
around $200,000 was raised for approximately 200 not-
for-prot agencies. Thanks to all who ran, helped and
contributed to a terric affair.
Oh, and P.S.; No surprise - TRRC cleaned up
in the Team Challenge. Great running gang!

Lincoln Hall Classic - June 12, 1994
By Joanna & Rich Nash
Noah Told Me We Should Build An Ark.
.or should we say, "then they ran the Lincoln Hall
Classic?!" The weather forecast for the day was "intermit
tent showers," but after awakening to booming thunder
storms, I had my doubts. Well, as the moming pro
gressed, they were correct to an extent: there were inter
mittent showers. . .between the torrential downpours!
The waters parted momentarily around 9 A.M.,
and the race was off. At the rst mile, the lead pack had
split into two groups. It was somewhere between the
second and third mile that the heavens re-opened, trying to
make up lost time for the beautiful weather of the previous
week. At this time, those of us ducks back at the nish
line were beginning to envision inventing goggles with
built in windshield wipers to get everyone to the nish line,
but our rst runner, the ever-swift Dave Mitzi, was across
the nish line in 26:28, trying to outrun lightening and
Noah's oods. Tom Church was clocked in at 27:52, and
poured the equivalent of one pint of water from each
sneaker. Steve Calidonna came in a short 10 seconds
af t er Tom.
On the w^omen's side, Alessandra Lynch, who
also won the Mother's Day Race and the women's division
of the North County News, made it across the nish line in a
swift 30:51, with Alyssa Lifrieri coming in at 32:10 and
Kathleen Ford, third for the women at 33:24.
Between thunderous rolls and ominous lightening bolts, the other courageous 117 runners came across the nish line,
not needing a shower for the next week or two. When it was over, we looked back and labeled it a success in spite of the
weather. What could we do but laugh so hard we cried?!
The course start and nish were slightly different this year, ending in front of the visitors' center, to the enjoyment and
comfort of many.
There was a special award given to Kevin Lenahan for Outstanding Contributions in Artwork for the Taconic Road
Runners Club. He has been very helpful the in design and necessary artwork for the T-shirts used in many of TRRC's races
(including this one.) There was also a special trophy presented to Tom Kieman, Recreation Director at Lincoln Hall, for the
boys at Lincoln Hall who participated in the race.
We would like to express our thanks to The Daily Bagel for their major sponsorship of this race, and also Grand
Central Deli, Dynacast, and the Sports Attic for their additional sponsorships. Most of all, we would like to thank the many
volunteers that gave their time in the rain and awful weather to make this race possible. We couldn't have done it without you

laconics Cash In At The Hospital
The Vassar Brothers Hospital 20K/5K road races put out a call
to all the fast runners and nobody came on Jime 5. Nobody except
Mid-Hudson's Olympic Marathon hopeful, Mike Slinsky, who tempo-
ran to a 6 minute victory and $250 in 1:04:16. Not to be outdone,
Michelle Franklin won by over 7 minutes to take the same prize with a
1:15:33 on the women's side. Besides these excellent performances, it
seems that prize money isn't the draw they thought it would be.
But it did draw several Taconics to the 20K for a piece of the
$2300 prize money, and they withdrew plenty from the bank. Top
mast ers runners Ni ck Caswel l and Lee Saroken won t hei r di vi si ons and
$100 each. Nick ran 1:13:21, ninth place overall over the hilly 12.4
mi l e cour se. Lee was t he ni nt h woman over al l wi t h a 1: 36: 09. Er i ka
Abraham was two women back with second place masters time of
1:39:48 for $75. Greg Diamond was fth overall in a 1:12:14 and took
home $70. Finishing one place ahead of Lee was Charlie Sprauer and
just behind her Billy Drake in his customary age group winning
position. Art Baisley and Gerard DiMaggio also took on the 20K
c o u r s e .
The new format increased the old 10K/2M distances, but kept
the simultaneous start the same. For the rst 1/2 mile, including a
steep 0.1 hill, the two races ran side by side. After rolling for most of
the next 10 miles, the 20K course took a severe downhill turn for a
quick nish. The 5K had a similar downhill to their nish.
Ed McLaughlin took 19th overall with a 19:09 overall in the
5K, with John Nicolais in 20:48 and president Fred Loehfelm in 21:17
following close behind. There was no prize money offered for the 5K,
which drew 126 competitors, compared to 10 for the 20K
What Running Means To Me
By Jessica Mazzeo, 1994 TRRC Scholarship Finalist
Each day after my last class ends, I rush down the
stairs to my locker and nd them wailing for me. Like
puppies listening for their owner's footsteps, they anticipate
my arrival. I try not to be late, because I know how that
disappoints them. They want to be set free; they want to
escape the bondage of my tattered gym bag.
I change my clothes quickly and, with my bag
slung across my shoulder, head down to the track. I sit on
the ground and pull them out. They smell of rubber and
have adapted themselves, as a chameleon, to the red color
of my high school's track. I put them on my feet and lace
them tightly. They are so excited to be performing our
daily ritual.
After stretching for a while, 1 begin to run. They
help to ease me up and down with the gel-llings. The air
smells sweet, and the wind feels so good against my face.
All is peaceil and serene. There is no scape like this that
I know.
As I set and accomplish new goals, they accom
pany me. They challenge me to run longer and faster.
When I run in races, I feel them stiffen slightly, They are
just as nervous as I am, However, once the gun sounds,
there is no stopping us.
My sneakers are unaware of any problems that I
may have as each day passes. All they know is what I feel
when they're with me, running, and what I feel when I run

TRRC member Keith Panzer continued his
string (Disney, Las Vegas) of sub-3 how-
marathons, completing the Los Angeles
Marathon in 2:59:10. However, it came to
an end in Boston with a 3:06:02, followed
by Yonkers 6 days later in 3:12:39, followed
by Long Island one week later in 3:04:16.
At press time, we didn't have times for his
May 15 performance in the Revco-Cleve-
land Marathon or upcoming San Francisco
Marathon July 31.

standing & Waiting - Chapter 2
By Susan Solow
As you may recall from my last article
(I foolishly thought - my only article), 1 wrote about the plight of
the support squad at the New York City Marathon. Before I go
any further, let me just say, '"Tis better to stand and wait in
London and/ or Pari s t han t o st and and wai t i n New York! "
As you may have guessed, (assuming you are one of the
few people left whom neither Howie nor 1 told about our trip to
London and Paris) this article is about the recent London and
Par i s Mar at hons.
Our son, Andrew, spent his junior Spring semester
abroad. This means he goes to classes in London, gets to travel all
over Europe, and we get to go visit him. Not a bad deal for
anyone. It didn't really matter to us when we went, until we
r ecei ved a br ochur e f r om Mar at hon Tour s about t he London
Marathon package. They also said the Paris Marathon was the
following Sunday, and for the few, very few who have tried it, it
was hect i c but f un! ?!
Well, to cut a long story somewhat shorter, we decided to
go for it. Unfortunately, Howie's injuries made the certainty of his
running both events very up in the air. We had a 9 P.M. ight out
of JFK, which meant we were ying overnight. As Howie said on
our way to the airport Friday...
"Do you realize that the next time I wake up, I'm running a
Ma r a t h o n ? "
The marathon was Sunday morning. We arrived in
London on Saturday morning, and by the time we got our luggage,
exchanged money, found out how to get to our hotel and got there,
check in and met with Andrew, it was already afternoon. We did
a little sight-seeing, but Howie did NOT want to walk. At all! 1
was beginning to have my doubts about him successfully complet
ing both or even one marathon.
Marathon Tours had the race packets with someone who
was staying at our hotel. We just called his room and he delivered
them. There was a "kit bag" (as in "pack up your old kit bag") to
pack up your belongings to have for you at the nish. There was a
smaller version of your race number which you adhered to the kit
bag. These bags were collected at the start and were there in buses
at the nish, by numt)er. Very well organized. There was a bus
leaving our hotel to take Howie to the starting line. Howie said
they got there early, so the driver drove around, so they wouldn't
have to hang out waiting. The weather, by the way, was COLD.
1 stayed at the hotel, which was 1/2 block from
Buckingham Palace, which was also the nish. I saw the start on
TV. (Interesting note; In the U.S. we keep track of our running
in meters, but in London, which is on the metric system, they
kept announcing how the runners were doing by miles.)
Andrew and I went to the nish line (1 wasn't about to
mn or job around a strange city like 1 had in New York - even
though I'm in better shape now.) Fortunately for us, the weather
was cold, so Howie ran in his Sporthills. (Not that many runners
wore long black pants, so it made our search much easier.) We
worried, of course, about how Howie was managing. The crowds
were friendly, nicer than New Yorkers (NO, really?!). The
crowdcontrol was excellent, the surroundings (right outside
Buckingham Palace) beautiful. It was GREAT! We were
lucky to nd Howie after the race. (It pays to
have a tall son.) He had already picked up
the previously discussed kit bag, and was given his nisher's T-
shirt (available ONLY to nishers). Howie was thrilled by the
whole experience, and we enjoyed the rest of our time in London.
(I won't get into that here). Next, off to Paris.. .
Steve Quinn had told Colleen Law, who lives in Paris,
that we were coining and that Howie planned to run the Paris
marat hon. We cal l ed her f rom London and reached her on t he
evening of her rst run in a while. She had run a Euro Disney
lOK, I think. Anyway, we met her in Paris at the race center,
which was next to the Eiffel Tower, and picked up the number -
NO LINES! I! There were applications for the marathon in
McDonald's (just like New York - NOT!). I was asked if I wanted
to enter. I could have.. .except that I can't run 26 miles. Oh well,
it's good to know that if you ever decide at the last minute to run
Paris, you can.
We spent some lovely time with Colleen and Mark.
Howie was really psyched for this one. He felt condent, I think,
and seemed relaxed. (Okay, as relaxed as you can be after running
a marathon and non-stop sight-seeing and eating and drinking.) I
have never seen Howie this relaxed before a marathon. It was as if
there was no pressure. He and Colleen discussed where they were
meeting - a Metro ride for her, a quick walk from the hotel for
Howie and I - to the Arc d'Triomphe. I took pictures of the two of
them before the race, each dressed in their Taconic T-shirts. They
looked good!
Mark met Andrew and me at our hotel, and we walked
over the nish, which was right near the Arc d'Triomphe. I
certainly wasn't traveling around in a city where they don't speak
English!
We stood next to a fence in front of a booth that sold
f ood. We wat ched. The weat her her e was beaut i f ul and war m.
It rained slightly during the marathon, but Howie and Colleen
didn't mind. They ran together for half the race, sight-seeing all
the time. Howie enjoyed being cheered in French. Enthusiasm
and encouragement don't know language barriers. We had no
trouble nding them. We took more pictures, drank champagne
and had a great time.
The marathons were wonderful. The trip was great,
and I will stand and wait for my runner anywhere he chooses to
run. . . but London and Pari s ai n' t bad!

Rankings are by average score per race, using onLy runner's
top ve races. Race scores rounded due to space consideration.
Since eventual average score will divided by 5, average is now
computed by dividing by a minimum of two (only 3 races to go).
