Abstract
This paper presents a case study known as the proof-of-concept of an integrated, user-friendly surface transportation weather
system for northern California. The goal of this system is to streamline and integrate currently available road weather data into
one single source that is easily accessible by incident responders and potential traveling public. The data were mainly obtained
from Caltrans RWIS, California Data Exchange Center, National Weather Service. There is great potential in the use of such data
for purposes ranging from maintenance and traveler safety to emergency medical response and homeland security. There is great
potential in the use of such data for purposes ranging from maintenance and traveler safety to emergency medical response and
homeland security. This work demonstrates an innovative approach to develop a regional pilot weather information system, in
which a system engineering approach was used to incorporate stakeholder input and feedback throughout the iterative
development process.
