Four years ago, Cherokee High
School student Nick Musulin had
a goal of getting involved in com-
munity service in his school. In
his time, he forged a relationship
with St. Jude Childrens Research
Hospital, established partner-
ships with area businesses and
raised more than $20,000 for the
charity.
On Wednesday night, the dis-
trict gave back to Musulin for his
years of hard work.
Musulin was named the Chero-
kee winner of the Student Volun-
teer Award, an annual recogni-
tion given to one student at each
Lenape district high school who
went above and beyond perform-
ing service in the community. The
other three award winners were
Lenape High School's Craig Cas-
sidy, Shawnee High School's
Abbey Wiker and Seneca High
School's Shawn Tuman.

Mt. Laurel resident Phil Huber
is very familiar with floods.
Living in the Ramblewood sec-
tion of the town, Huber's home
sits on a floodplain. His basement
sees water come in during bad
rain storms, such as the one that
pounded the area on April 29 and
caused flooding in multiple loca-
tions.
However, Huber thinks the
township can do something to
help reduce the excess water.
At last weeks council meeting,
Huber requested the township
clean mud from three culverts at
Penny Bridge near the Ramble-
wood development.
According to Huber, the cul-
verts were void of mud for about
four years. Now, the culverts are
about half-clogged. Huber pre-
sented pictures of the clogged cul-
verts to council, saying the mud
has caused the water to rise
quickly in the area during
storms.
Essentially, Ramblewood is
being used as a retention base,
Huber said.
During the April 29 storm,
Huber said he spent much of the
night pumping water out of his
basement. While he did not suffer
damage during the latest storm,
the past hasn't been too kind to
him. Last year, he lost his car
when a flash flood hit the area; he
was unable to move his vehicle
before it was taken by the water.
Fixing the problem with the
culverts is a little more involved
than what Huber presented.
While township officials said they
have no issue removing the mud
from under Penny Bridge, they
explained they cannot clean out
other clogs in the area that might
also be causing issues.
We cannot clean the creek on
the golf course, said Council-
man Jim Keenan, referring to the
neighboring Ramblewood Coun-
try Club.
Township Manager Maureen
Mitchell said the township can
send a notice to the golf course
owners to clean out their area of
the creek.
Mitchell also plans to ask the
New Jersey Turnpike Authority
to clean out the culvert it main-
tains within Mt. Laurel.
Despite this, Keenan added
there is only so much the town-
ship can do about the flooding. He
noted Huber's home is in an area
prone to flooding.
He also said clogs outside Mt.
Laurel's borders may be con-
tributing to additional flooding,
and there is little the township
can do to help fix that.
For now, Huber said he hopes
the township follows through
with his request to clean out the
mud before the next storm rolls
through the area.

W
elcome to the beach! Were
so glad you came. I see you
have six people in your
party this afternoon. Will that be
smoking or non-smoking?
Remember that question smoking
or non-smoking? Seems like ages ago
that, every time you went out to eat,
the hostess at your favorite restaurant
would ask you that question.
Would you like to negatively im-
pact your health and those around
you, or would you like to breathe un-
sullied air? Maybe that would have
been a better question.
Now, it seems like that question
might be back again, but at a different
place than you might think outside
of all places, at the beach.
Last week, a state Senate committee
approved a bill that would ban smok-
ing at beaches and public parks
throughout the state. The committee
amended the bill, which the state As-
sembly passed in March, to add a sec-
tion to allow towns to set aside up to 20
percent of a beach or park as a smok-
ing area.
Yep. A smoking area. Outside.
Seems funny, doesnt it?
New Jersey, like the country as a
whole, is taking a major step to control
smoking, even though it isnt a con-
trolled substance. And good for New
Jersey.
Studies continue to show or,
rather, they show even more so how
harmful second-hand smoke is, and as
such, it is right and proper for govern-
ment entities to further control when
and where smoking can occur.
Smoking is still legal in the state, of
course, so basically, New Jersey is tak-
ing the stance that it doesnt care if
you harm yourself as long as you
dont harm others.
Good for New Jersey, and good for
every other place that is passing simi-
lar bills.
People who travel to the beach, a
playground or a park do so to enjoy the
outdoors in all its glory. Nearby smok-
ing, to non-smokers, can ruin that ex-
perience and affect their health. It is
only right and fair, then, that our gov-
ernment protects non-smokers from
that which is harmful to them and in
which they are choosing not to partici-
pate.
Now if only tobacco wasnt such a
big business and didnt bring us so
much tax revenue, we could outlaw it
all together.
Smoking or non-smoking?
Thats a question that you could be asked once again

expansion of smoking bans? Share your
thoughts on this, and other topics, in a let-
ter to the editor.
Registration low, changes coming to summer camp
By MIKE MONOSTRA
The Sun
Changes to Mt. Laurel's summer camp
may be coming for next year as the recre-
ation department is reporting a drastic
drop in registration for 2014.
Township Clerk Meredith Tomczyk said
only 30 children are registered for the 2014
camp, down from 90 who attended last year
and 150 the year prior.
Township officials say the biggest issue
is the camp hours.
The township's camp is from 8 a.m. to 3
p.m., while the school district runs a sepa-
rate camp from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. The town-
ship's camp doesn't have the time flexibili-
ty of the school district's.
It's hard for parents who are working,
Tomczyk said. They can't pick up their
kids at three.
The township cannot extend the hours
because of its arrangement with
Springville Elementary School, where the
camp is held. The school does not permit
the campers to remain there past 3 p.m.
Another issue is the fee for the summer
camp. There is not currently a reduced fee
for families with multiple children, while
the school district offers a discount.
To make the camp more attractive to
kids, Tomczyk recommended a discount
for families with multiple children, which
she said wouldn't have a drastic effect on
the camp's finances. Registration for the
camp goes into a trust fund, which is used
to pay for the expenditures. The camp does
not have any direct impact on the taxpay-
ers.
We'd still be able to pay for the camp
with the trust fund, Tomczyk said.
There was some concern among mem-
bers of council about the camp not being
able to cover costs with the reduced atten-
dance. However, Tomczyk assured every-
one the camp would break even with the
current number of children registered. In
addition, the recreation department is hop-
ing for an influx of late registrations in the
next few weeks. The camp opens on June
30.

of documentary films to encour-
age community discussion of
Americas civil rights history.
The NEH has partnered with the
Gilder Lehrman Institute of
American History to develop pro-
grammatic and support materials
for the sites. Mt. Laurel Library is
one of 473 institutions across the
country awarded a set of four
films chronicling the history of
the Civil Rights Movement. The
powerful documentaries, The
Abolitionists, Slavery by An-
other Name, The Loving Story
and Freedom Riders, include
dramatic scenes of incidents in
the 150-year effort to achieve
equal rights for all. Freedom
Riders received an Emmy in
2012, and The Loving Story and
The Abolitionists have been
nominated for Emmys in 2013.
Each of the films was produced
with NEH support, and each tells
remarkable stories of individuals
who challenged the social and
legal status quo of deeply rooted
institutions, from slavery to seg-
regation.

Adath Emanu-El
to rededicate Torah
At the June 3 Erev Shavout
Service, Adath Emanu-El is
rededicating its recently restored,
300-year old Torah.
Shavuot is the Hebrew word for
"weeks" and refers to the Jewish
festival marking the giving of the
Torah at Mount Sinai, which oc-
curs seven weeks after Passover.
In modern times, it is a celebra-
tion of Torah, education and ac-
tively choosing to participate in
Jewish life. This is an appropriate
holiday to rededicate the 300-year
old repaired Torah scroll.
This scroll survived the Holo-
caust by being hidden in a
Czechoslovakian basement. Re-
cently, Rabbi Moshe Druin, a
Torah sofer or scribe, painstak-
ingly restored this Torah.
This is an evening to celebrate
Torah and also to celebrate the re-
turn of this historical scroll.
For more information on the
event or Torah, call the Adath
Emanu-El synagogue office at
(856) 608-1200.

Applications being
accepted for Girlblazers
The Alice Paul Institute is ac-
cepting applications for Girlblaz-
ers Summer Camp. The camp,
which is open to girls entering
fifth or sixth grade in September,
takes place from Thursday, June
26, through Wednesday, July 2,
from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., at Paulsdale,
the Mt. Laurel birthplace and
childhood home of Alice Paul,
New Jerseys most famous suffra-
gist.
The camp begins with a tour of
historic Paulsdale to teach the
girls about the life and legacy of
Alice Paul, then a yoga class, and
a healthy eating and cooking
workshop.
Other activities include self-
portraiture in the style of Frido
Kahlo, a wood craft to learn about
construction and engineering,
and a trip to Lake Atsion in Sha-
mong.
The registration fee is $175 per
girl, with a $25 discount for regis-
trations received before June 1.
To register, or for more informa-
tion about Girlblazers, contact
Claire Schmieder, program asso-
ciate at the Alice Paul Institute at
(856) 231-1885 or claires@ali-
cepaul.org.

Wiker totally shocked by award
of hard work and determination.
He let rejection after rejection for
his school fundraising event blow
right by and eventually started a
head-shaving fundraiser event,
with proceeds going toward St.
Jude's. The event debuted in 2012
and has now become a fixture on
the Cherokee calendar.
We were able to partner with
the Philadelphia Flyers,
Musulin said. We were able to
get businesses and celebrities in-
volved.
Each of the district's four hon-
orees received their award for dif-
ferent accomplishments, but they
each had something in common.
District director of programs and
planning Chris Heilig said all
four recipients accumulated
more than 300 hours of service
each. All four were not only in-
volved in clubs in their school
community, but also reached out
and served within their respec-
tive towns.
Wiker provided a good example
of performing service outside
school grounds. The Shawnee stu-
dent led an effort to construct a
rain garden at the Vaughan Com-
munity House in Medford Lakes.
A video during the ceremony
filmed her and other Shawnee
students performing the work.
I was totally shocked, Wiker
said upon learning she won the
award. I was speechless. I didn't
think I was going to win it.
Tuman was honored by the
award, but left the audience with
words of encouragement. He
noted how one doesn't just need to
work at or attend one of the high
schools to get involved.
I think its amazing that,
where we live, you can serve, he
said.
The Lenape district also hon-
ored parent volunteers who
served the school district through
parent organizations. From
school bands to sports and robot-
ics teams, parents from all four
high schools were recognized
with certificates for their service.
As parents, youre our stu-
dents first teacher, Superintend-
ent Carol Birnbohm said. You
show what community service
looks like in action.
The recognition of the parents
is something the student award
winners recognized as well. Each
thanked their parents for their
guidance.
All four award recipients will
be graduating and heading to col-
lege in the fall. Musulin said he
wants to continue his involve-
ment in community service as he
heads to Indiana University.
Still, Wednesday night's cere-
mony is one he will never forget.
It's incredible, Musulin said.
It's amazing to be around some
of these other people who have
served their school.
