LETTER FROM THE TE
magazine
Summertime and the living is (supposed to be) easy
When we think of summer, its the scent of freshly mowed grass, the crack of
bat hitting baseball and the feeling of sand in between our toes that come to
mind not stress. But the warmer months can be chockfull of demands on
our time. If youre feeling a bit burnt out between shuttling the kids to swimming lessons, mowing the lawn, and making desserts for the local community
or church celebration, consider taking a moment to yourself to de-stress. These
methods can help:
BREATHE DEEPLY. Taking slow, mindful breaths slows your heart rate and
lowers blood pressure. Set aside a few undisturbed minutes to just breathe.
If youve never done breathing exercises before, start by sitting or standing up
straight. Close your eyes, if it feels natural to you. Inhale slowly through your nose,
focusing on filling your abdomen. You want your belly not the upper part of
your chest to expand the most. Slowly exhale through your mouth.
Want to build up this particular relaxation skill? Consider taking a meditation or
deep breathing class. Akanishta Kadampa Buddhist Center explains how to create
a sacred space for such pursuits in Refresh your meditation practice.
reason; certain scents can sooth. Lavender and chamomile are perhaps the best
known relaxation oils, but also consider diffusing ylang ylang, frankincense, bergamot, or other essential oils in your living and working spaces.
GET ACTIVE. A quick walk on your lunch break or a few good stretches can boost
endorphins the feel-good hormones your body produces thereby reducing
stress. Stuck in the office? Read up becoming a better computer athlete in part 2
of Jade Bunks Thriving in the modern world.
EAT RIGHT. Did you know that vitamin C can work as a stress buster? According
to WebMD, Studies suggest this vitamin can curb levels of stress hormones while
strengthening the immune system. Time to load up on those oranges!
Looking for other simple ways to incorporate wellness into your life? This
months issue of Natures Pathways has plenty healthy inspiration to share. Debbie
Armstrong offers Surprising alternatives for treating headaches, while Nikki
Cohen-Wichner helps guide us through Adventures in self-awareness.

muscles. Its hard on arthritic or overweight pets to stand for long periods of
time. Yet, when they only come in a couple
of times a year, theres no way around it.
Wanting six months worth of brushing,
dematting and bathing done in one afternoon is a lot to ask of your pet and your
groomer. More frequent visits will shorten
the amount of time required to complete
their groom. Why not bring them in more
often and reduce the stress and strain of
those bi-annual grooms?
Dont be surprised if there are financial
benefits as well. More frequent grooms
also can help you avoid additional charges
for things like dematting. Many people
bathe their pets at home as a cost-saving
measure and theres nothing wrong with
that. In fact, it would be unreasonable
to suggest that every time your pet gets
dirty you should rush to the groomer.
However, where people get into trouble is
when they wash and dry their pet without
ever combing them out. Ever notice when
your hair is wet that it appears a little
longer than it actually is and when it dries,
it shrinks back up a little? Each time you
wash your pet without combing them out
first, any tangles or mats they have will
become a little tighter. Before you know

Springs gems!
By Debi Morton
Here are a few spring edibles to easily find and prepare. Dont be
held back from doing this because of identification concerns, use
the Internet or some of the books recommended below. Be sure to
know where you are picking. If you use chemicals on your lawn,
do not search for or eat edibles from that source or any other place
that could have been pesticided or herbicided.
PURSLANE (PORTULACA OLERACEA): Pictured. Often
found in driveways or grass. Can be eaten raw or cooked. Good
in salads, soups and stews. Gives an okra-like consistency to the
dish and can be pickled. (Caution: contains oxalic acid such as in
rhubarb. Avoid if you are sensitive.)
DANDELION: Best picked before the bloom. The classic dish is a
salad with a sweet vinaigrette to balance the bitterness. Add crisped
bacon and use the drippings to wilt the greens. Tip: cover your early
selected dandelions with a clay pot to grow yellow leaves and a lighter
flavor. Commonly available in your local organic farm market, too.
LAMBS QUARTERS (CHENOPODIUM ALBUM): Found
near disturbed earth like roadsides, agricultural fields, open sunny
yards, gardens and meadows. Use like spinach. The tender leaves
can be added to salad, while the older stalks are steamed, boiled
and added to soups and stews. Garlic, mirin and sesame oil go well
with the nuttiness of the leaves. Or, replace spinach with this in the
Japanese ohitashi dish. It is really delicious.
GARLIC MUSTARD (ALLIARIA PETIOLATA): European
native and brought to the U.S. in the mid-19th century for culinary
use. It is a very invasive plant and not wanted in the woodlands so
you are encouraged to pull it as it inhibits healthy woodland soils.
So pull and eat! (See the following reference for an informative site

The Last
Tomorrow
By D.S. Neviaser
This month, Ive decided to print a poem that I hope gets you to think
about what gifts life and you really are.
What would you do differently today if you knew you were going
to die tomorrow?
Would you make sure your family and friends knew you loved
them?
Would you forgive and forget a past transgression that time has
made insignificant?
Would you call an old friend you havent seen or talked to for far
too long?
Would you spend some quality time with your children, or parents,
and share without
Judgment the true essence of your hearts?
Would you laugh more and revel in the joy of feeling happy?
Would you allow yourself to see life without the qualifiers of stress
and worry?
Would you give yourself permission and enough freedom to play
with the heart of a child?
Would you take a walk and find comfort and inspiration in the
natural world that tugs at your soul?
Would you make it a point to see the sunset so you may admire the
canvas of God one last time?
It is easy to perceive time as an endless resource, but a last tomorrow for each of us
Is inevitable and impending.
The only variable is time; it is just a matter of when.
It may not be an immediate tomorrow, but as surely as today will
fast become yesterday,
You will find yourself at the door of your last tomorrow soon
enough.
So, whatever promises you have made to yourself,
Whatever intentions your heart feels are important,
Whatever hugs that lie unfulfilled in your arms,
Whatever words that need to be shared,

Children and pet loss

phrases like, I know how you feel, and instead ask, How do you
feel? Helping children talk about the loss will help them heal.
Let them know missing their pet may make them sad, and it is OK
to cry when you are sad. It is also OK to laugh and be happy when
they remember the funny things their pet did, and the happy times.
Simply talking about their pet what they liked, the funny things
they did and sharing memories is part of the healing process.
Let children have choices whenever possible. They can choose
how to say goodbye to their pet: would they like to draw a picture,
or write a note to go with their pet when it is cremated or buried?
Would they like to hold a memorial service? Do they want a
photograph of their pet, a lock of fur or a clay paw-print impression? Giving them choices about how to say goodbye can make
them feel included and valued.
Young children may experience grief bursts, intense emotion
that will last a few minutes, then they will stop crying and go play.
While this may seem strange to adults, it is their way of coping
with the grief and not letting it overwhelm them.
Just like every adult has their own grief journey to walk, every
child does too. There is no one right way or time frame to grieve
the loss of a pet. Children may need to talk to their parents or
to caring professionals through a pet-loss support group to work
through the loss and to heal.

to help you identify it and understand why we need to be aggressive about removing it.) That being said, enjoy the mild garlic
flavor in salads or soups and feel good about eradicating it.
RAMPS OR WILD LEEK (ALLIUM TICOCCUM): Found in
woodlands, north-facing slopes and wet areas. Easy to identify.
They are slow growing and are becoming endangered, so buy
farmed ramps or plant your own. A delicacy with garlic and onion
flavors, use as you would any onion or leek raw, sauted, in soups
and stews. Also in many fine restaurants and in organic markets.

their spaces. Some of these artists were monks and nuns, but
others were not, and ongoing conversations between patrons,
artists and monasteries produced lively partnerships between the
larger society and cloistered communities. Famous works of art
Leonardo da Vincis Last Supper, for instance were originally
commissioned for monastic settings.
To this day, all monasteries pay great attention to an aesthetic
sense that honors beauty, balance and harmony as attributes of
God. For untold years, music and art have been a means of focusing the mind and body, facilitating meditation and prayer across
time, language and culture. One can look to the use of shared
songs, chants, singing bowls or iconography as diverse forms of
music and art that draw people into a state of alert devotional stillness in many sacred traditions.
Perhaps most importantly, however, the creative arts and prayer
together can unite us with other living beings and with the planet
at large. Art is a means of perceiving and appreciating the sacred,
and of bringing people into the presence of wonder. The monastic tradition, through its ongoing commitment to spiritual growth
and the common good, continues to provide vibrant spaces for the
flourishing and advancement of creative arts.

infused, connected; plus Ha, breath or the
activity of breathing, aliveness. A blessing
in the declaration of being.
This may take a while to absorb, so read
his definition again and breathe it into your
body and spirit. It is profound.
The state of Hawaii also weighs in on
this subject by stating the following in the
Aloha Spirit law:
Aloha Spirit is the coordination of mind
and heart within each person. It brings each
person to the self. Each person must think and
emote good feelings to others. In the contemplation and presence of the life force, Aloha...
is more than a word of greeting or farewell
or a salutation. Aloha means mutual regard
and affection and extends warmth in caring
with no obligation in return. Aloha is the
essence of relationships in which each person
is important to every other person for collective existence. Aloha means to hear what is
not said, to see what cannot be seen and to
know the unknowable.
Having a state define a word in a law
truly proves how potent and dynamic the
aloha spirit can be to life and society.
Now, simply say the word a-lo-ha aloud
three times, emphasizing each syllable. Do
you notice any changes in your body? Is
there a shift in your breath? How does your
heart feel after the third aloha?

Thriving in
the modern
world: Part 2
Becoming a better
computer athlete
By Jade Bunk, SFG
ets get one thing straight from the beginning: You are an
athlete. No matter what other titles you give yourself, you
are an athlete; it doesnt matter if youre a mom athlete, a
weekend hiker athlete, a professional athlete or, like most of us, a
semi-pro computer athlete.
Outside the normal functions of being a human animal (feeding,
sleeping and going to the bathroom), whatever you spend the most
time doing is your sport. Now, a lot of people say, Oh, well, I run,
or I lift weights, or I do boot camp. But how much time do they
really spend doing these activities compared to the amount of time
they spend staring at a screen and using a keyboard?
Many people have to be on the computer for eight hours or more
a day, and others use the computer recreationally for just as long.
Whats really important about changing your life and starting to
feel better is changing your perspective on how you see the habitual
activities you participate in. Your body is always adapting to whatever youre doing 24/7. If youre on the computer for more than two
hours a week, its time to consider yourself a computer athlete.
You can get an amazing workout in 30 minutes or you can take
great strides in sabotaging the results that you want from your
exercise program in the same amount of time. Creating stiffness
and dysfunction throughout your entire body is easy, its called
being an amateur computer athlete. What separates amateurs
from professionals in any sport is preparation and the ability to
counteract the negative effects of their sport. Runners knee, tennis
elbow, jumpers calves or the most common, typers wrists, are all
examples of amateur athletics gone bad.
As I sit in front of my computer and write this article, Im spending possibly three times as long in a sitting position than it would
take me to get a great workout. If your time spent in poor posture
or dysfunctional movement is greater than your time spent in
good quality movement, you are effectively sabotaging your gains.
So what does that mean? It means you need to have a plan for
how to deal with the attrition that builds up by sitting and staring at
a computer screen. It means you have to do the sort of movement
26
next person you meet. How did it make you feel? How did they
respond?
To those who live their lives spreading the spirit of aloha,
it means sharing and caring, unconditional love, spreading
sunshine, never being selfish or judgmental, having faith in others,
and making every person you meet feel special.
The intent to live, breathe and spread the spirit of aloha has
powerful effects on healing the wounds of our world, others and
our life. Aloha especially targets the heart, opening and softening
it so we can both receive and give freely.
What makes lomi lomi massage unique is the intention to give
aloha through loving touch, talk, prayer and listening with sincerity of warm emotions from the heart. The aloha spirit is essential
and flows freely from the massage therapist to you from the beginning to the end of a lomi lomi massage.
Simply try each day to meet or leave one person with an aloha.
You may be surprised by how living the spirit of aloha can change
a persons world.

How to
make pizza
healthier
izza may have had humble beginnings, but today it is one of the most
popular foods worldwide. More
than five billion pizzas are sold across the
globe each year, and pizza accounts for 10
percent of all food-service sales.
Although pizza has many positive attributes, few consider pizza a healthy meal.
Laden with cheese and high-calorie meats,
pizza is often referred to as a guilty pleasure.
However, there are a variety of ways to make
the pizza you love better for your body.
DOWNPLAY THE CHEESE. Pizza
originated in Naples, Italy, and it has been
said the first pizzas were comprised of just
dough and sauce and no cheese. Restaurants
that favor more authentic pizzas of the past
will not rely heavily on cheese when preparing their pizzas. Instead of ordering a pizza
with extra cheese, opt for minimal cheese to
add just a subtle component of flavor to the
pizza. Such an alteration to the recipe can
reduce the saturated fat and cholesterol in
pizza by a considerable amount.
SAVOR THE TOMATOES. Tomatoes
provide a bevy of health benefits. The carotenoids, specifically lycopene, found in tomatoes have a number of beneficial properties,
including preventing the oxidation of LDL
cholesterol. According to a report from
researchers at Athens Medical School that
was published in Nutrition Research, a daily
70-gram portion of tomato paste containing
roughly 33 milligrams of lycopene was associated with an improvement in flow-mediated dilation, a measure of a blood vessels

econnective Healing tends to be a life-changing experience. Now, for the first time, you may access a new, more
comprehensive spectrum of healing than has been attainable at any point prior to now, one that not only includes but
expands beyond any and all forms of energy healing.
The Reconnective Healing spectrum is comprised of the full
healing and evolutionary continuum of energy, light and information. Your interactions with these highly palpable energies is initiated during your session, and they continue to work with you long
after youve left your Reconnective Healing practitioners office.
Following your sessions, you will be attuned to a more comprehensive and evolutionary healing frequency than ever before.
If youre lucky, your healing will come in the form you anticipate. If
youre really lucky, your healing will come in a form youve not even
dreamed of one that the Universe specifically has in mind for you.

In some cases, decreased pain and improved mobility are immediate. Typically, it may take a few treatment sessions for a lasting
positive effect since we are trying to cause mechanical, biochemical and neurological changes. We are looking for a cumulative
response to deactivate trigger points, disrupt pain and restore
optimal muscle function.
The AlterG uses precise unweighting technology to reduce gravitys impact by selecting any weight between 20 percent and 100
percent of your bodyweight using 1 percent increments. This
allows patients to rehabilitate lower extremity injuries with less
pain and less impact. It also allows patients who may otherwise not be able to walk secondary to pain to improve mobility,
strength and train with reduced stress on joints and muscles.

B12 injections deliver far more B12 into the system than the pill
forms. This is a quicker and a more effective way to deliver vitamin
B into the body, driving it into the muscle vs. going up against the
digestive process, which usually weakens the absorption. B12 is
virtually nontoxic and nearly painless.
Even though they are very small, your two adrenal glands, which
sit above each of your kidneys, play a very important role. Your
adrenal glands secrete the three major stress-handling hormones
in the body (cortisol, DHEA, and adrenaline). Your adrenal
hormones are released in a cycle called circadian rhythm. An
abnormal adrenal rhythm influences many functions of the body,
like energy production, muscle and joint function, bone health,
immune health, sleep quality, skin regeneration, thyroid function,
and stress response.
So how do you know if your adrenal glands are functioning
optimally? A test called an adrenal stress index test, or ASI, is a
noninvasive test that uses saliva. The collection is done in your
own home and the test kit is easy to use. Saliva test results have
increased accuracy and give more in-depth information than
serum or urine tests.

When a person with a professional credential does make information available online or in a magazine, it is important to take into
consideration whether or not they are doing so out of personal
conviction, attempt to sell a product or both. For example, www.
mercola.com was compiled by Dr. Mercola, a medical professional
who advocates a holistic approach to caring for your personal
health. I found a vast array of articles and statements about how
to target the natural needs of our bodies and work with them to
stay as healthy as possible. Cool, I thought. Then I realized at the
bottom of the page he was actually advertising a skincare regimen.
Are the pieces of health advice nullified because this guy is trying
to sell a product? I dont think so. Some of the issues and information he presents on the site addressed experiences Ive already had
with my own health struggles, and although I wasnt persuaded to
order his products, I would suggest to others that its worth checking out to explore personal health solutions.

Redecorate your home with
what you already own!
By Jeanine Hanson
ver the years, we collect the art and accessories that interest and delight us, and these are the very things we want
to showcase in our homes. However, as new treasures
and gifts continue to find their way to us, we often find our homes
overwhelmed with all that we have amassed.
If you are feeling like your home is in need of a makeover, dont
toss out what you have and start from scratch. You dont need to
spend good money to purchase new art and accessories hoping to
get a fresh new look. Transform your home using what you already
own just by following a few interior designer secrets.
Here are a few simple ways to rearrange your art and accessories to make a real impact. See what a difference you can make,
without any new investment!

of photos, pottery pieces together, or wood items with wood.
4. Now look over the room and identify where these special
items are best displayed. Hang the art first. For a collection
of many photos, consider a photo gallery wall or one surface
on which to arrange them all; this is much more effective than
displaying them on multiple surfaces. When filling a cabinet,
keep like things together: glass items on one shelf and china
on another will bring a cohesive look to the overall display.
Consider using a few pieces of your collection at any one time

threats to our health as a first line of defense, and saunas have been
used for detoxification purposes through ayurveda in India for
thousands of years. Sauna use can definitely aid in that immune
defense and also help the body sweat out toxins and inflammation
that reside deeper in the tissues. Chronic inflammation is indeed
a pervasive problem and is responsible for a host of current health
problems, including acne, asthma, allergies, food sensitivities and
other digestive problems, and various autoimmune disorders. The
longer we keep our bodies in this state, the more likely we are to
see evidence in our other systems.
Many of us have grown accustomed to living in our inflammatory state and need to break the cycle to achieve good health.
Regular massage, cupping therapy or other bodywork, and sauna
use can go a long way in resetting ourselves to help our bodies
detox, reduce inflammation and then achieve healing. Could you
use a little extra detoxification from heat therapy today?

Why or how does this happen? Many people have way too many
irons in the fire, suffer from too many preconceived notions or
are on overload from their attachment to technology in any form.
They are still going round and round by trying to figure things out,
not realizing this is exactly what the ego wants! It wants individuals to get away from Source (or whatever you might call it) by overloading their schedules to the point of absurdity and exhaustion!
Many of them, (maybe you too), fill their lives with innumerable distractions for many reasons: They are afraid theyll miss out
on something or be left out, they worry that sitting still too long
might lead to isolation, they avoid truly connecting with others
and fail to make any commitment to anything. Abject fatigue often
ensues.
None of us ever begin our journey with that intention; I firmly
believe this. We all want to be happy and peaceful, yet life gets in
the way. One huge billboard of life after another sucks us in and
we take the most tantalizing exit off the main road to Source. We
did it again, succumbed to temptation.
How can I help? I recommend you take time to assess your life.
What prevents you from connecting with Source? Is your schedule
so full that you make excuses? Have you bitten off more than you
can chew? Have you said yes too many times? Have you made
decisions because you dont have enough money? Are you afraid
to be alone? Have you isolated yourself because youre afraid of
being judged? Answer as honestly as you can.
Next step: Have you joined some form of spiritual or study
group? If so, does delving deeply into your own fears scare you?
Do you attend strictly for its social aspects? Has your attitude or
positive thinking changed since you participated? How is your life
working for you?
We forget that what we believe is reflected in everything we say
and do. All of us can pretty readily discern when others are insincere or afraid of intimacy or commitment, right? It works both
ways!
In A Course in Miracles, it says, The distractions of the ego
may seem to interfere with your learning, but the ego has no
power to distract you unless you give it the power to do so.

Emotional
health and you
By Ron Urban
e all have ups and downs in our lives and in our relationships. There are seasons of excitement, stress and
transition, and also times of great struggle. Human
emotion is the core of our beings. What we feel can often paralyze
our life situations and affect our relationships that are most dear
to us. Our rational mind and thinking need to sync with our own
emotions for us to know true happiness and push us forward when
we become stuck in our lives or dissatisfied in our relationships.
One without the other can be catastrophic and hold us captive in
places we are not meant to be.
Case in point: If you were to be honest and put a value on those
things near and dear to your heart, what would they be? For many,
family, a significant other and career would be common themes.
Most of these involve people in some sort of dynamic. By design,
we as humans recognize the need for connections to live, to work
and also to know pleasure. How do we measure our satisfaction
with others? That depends on the nature of the relationship or
dynamic. However, one thing is sure: we all need to feel connected,
understood, appreciated and respected. In our more intimate relationships we crave more emotional intimacy: oneness, honesty,
loyalty and even romantic expression.
When the torrents, storms or personal struggles come, where
do you take cover? Most likely it is in your most close or intimate
relationships. For various reasons, we cleave to the people who
know us best: our partners, significant others, spouses or companions. Even though this is natural and healthy, we all need to assure
that we keep in check our own emotional health when we ride
the storms, get caught in the torrents or are swimming amongst
sharks. Emotional instability can affect the quality of our lives and
can make or break our closest relationships.
What are the warning signs of emotional instability?
Signs of depression
An imbalance of giving and receiving
Lack of sexual intimacy
Compromised or one-sided communication
Ongoing pessimism or anger
Blaming or shaming those closest to you for your struggles
Challenging times are inevitable. The strongest relationships are
ones that can weather the storms. Ideally, when one person is
down the other has the strength to hold him or her up. The danger
is when the warning signs linger longer than a season; in that case,
the beauty and intimacy in the relationship can change, resulting
in apathy, indifference or pity. The well-being of a relationship is
directly tied to your own emotional well-being. Depression and
anxiety can disrupt the rhythmic flow of our most valuable possessions, our intimate relationships.
Love is the foundation of healthy and passionate relationships.
Stress and outside pressures create ripples that draw us near to
those we are most intimate with. To sustain health and well-being
in our relationships, we need to live interdependently as individuals striving to live our best lives in pursuit of happiness. Individual
well-being begets emotional intimacy in our relationships, where
love is a two-way street.

When most people hear the word bacteria, they tend to think
of germs, foodborne illness and infections. While bacteria can
certainly produce these undesirable consequences, its important
to know that they are also extremely essential to good health.
What most people dont know is that our intestinal bacteria affect
if we gain or lose weight.
Only 1 in 10 cells in our body are actually our own. The other
nine are bacteria. You have about 100 trillion bacteria on and in
your body, with much of these being found in your digestive tract.
In fact, the human digestive tract is considered to be the densest
microbial ecosystem on the planet. And these bacteria arent just
sitting around doing nothing. They are 100 times more metabolically active than our liver.
Our gut bacteria are involved in preventing illness, hormonal
balance, vitamin production, digestion of food and, you guessed
it, your weight. When you think about the fact that 70 percent
of immune cells lie within the digestive tract, it makes sense that
gut health is linked to immune health. But not many people are
aware that all those bacteria affect weight. In fact, studies show
that the gut bacteria of obese people are notably different than that
of lean people. The flora are not only much less diverse, but they
also behave differently. When mice are introduced to the bacteria
of lean people, they tend to stay lean. When mice are introduced
to the bacteria of obese people, they gain weight quickly. And this
is with both groups of mice eating the exact same amount and
type of food.
What this research implies is that our weight isnt just a simple
matter of how many calories we consume; there seems to be much
more to the equation. Luckily, what you eat can literally change the
composition of your intestinal flora.
So how exactly do these microorganisms affect your weight?

self, at-home treatments are not quite enough to deal with the
aches and pains we may face, and additional support may help.
Each of these alternative and complementary modalities of
medicine has a slightly different focus and may be better suited
for your unique health complaints. A naturopathic doctor is
highly qualified to give nutritional, botanical and homeopathic
support, as well as to perform soft tissue manipulations that
may help to relieve pain. Chiropractic doctors perform spinal
adjustments and other soft tissue manipulations; by doing so,
they improve function and reduce pain. Acupuncturists most
often use needles at specific points in the body for the purpose
of stimulating and moving internal energy to correct imbalances and facilitate healing. Many different types of massage
exist, each offering some variation of soft tissue manipulation
to move fluid, stimulate tissue and help the body heal.
There are many healing options, and you are not limited to
only one! So get out there, enjoy the sun, move your body and

ave you ever wondered what all the wording on the labels
of the products you are purchasing means? Nowadays,
you see so many different claims in ads or on goods that
it gets confusing as to what they all mean and what is safe or not
for you and your family. Some of the phrases I have seen lately
can be so confusing, like: 100 percent natural, chemical-free or
organic. I decided to look up some of the phrases that I have been
seeing to find out what the actual definition of each is.
100 PERCENT NATURAL: The U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) states, From a food science perspective, it is difficult to define a food product that is natural because the food has
probably been processed and is no longer the product of the earth.
That said, FDA has not developed a definition for use of the term
natural or its derivatives. However, the agency has not objected
to the use of the term if the food does not contain added color,
artificial flavors, or synthetic substances. So, for chicken that is
labeled natural, this means that it could still contain antibiotics
or growth hormones.
CHEMICAL-FREE: First, lets define the word chemical.
According to the Merriam-Webster dictionary, a chemical is defined
as, a substance (such as an element or compound) that is made by
a chemical process. The key words to take out of that definition are
element or compound. Water is a compound, while oxygen is an
element. When you look at chemicals in this view, you now understand that it can be pretty much impossible for something to be
labeled chemical-free. Some companies are not clear on what specific
chemicals they are free of (toxic chemicals, poisonous gases, sulfates,
etc.), so it may seem like some type of marketing ploy to make you
think their product is healthier, when in reality, everything that is in
it is creating a chemical reaction. From what I have reviewed, this
type of labeling is meaningless and can be somewhat misleading. We
cant even breathe without creating a chemical reaction!

Living
abundantly
By Teresa Martens
t is your divine right to be healthy, happy, successful and prosperous. If you are not living the life you dream of, then its time to
take inventory. What are you thinking about? Are you embroiled
in dialogue that keeps you stuck, not moving forward? By taking
inventory of the thoughts youre thinking and becoming aware of
them, you can begin to make changes in the way you live your life.
We, as children of the divine, are not meant to live in poverty.
And that doesnt just include our physical being. It also includes
our mental, emotional and spiritual beings. Where are you lacking
in your life? You could be one of the richest people in town with
all your gold and trinkets, but what does your spiritual life look
like? Are you paying lip service to your spiritual needs? Do you
feel lonely, out of touch and disconnected? These are all signs that
there is work to be done in your spiritual life.
There is a quote that says, What you think, you become. By
thinking negative or poverty thoughts, you are creating a life for
yourself that does not support what was intended for you. It goes
against the natural flow of an abundant universe. When you think
positive, prosperous thoughts, you open up the valve and start
bringing to you all that you desire. It is a constant process of being
in the moment, thinking positive thoughts, visualizing what you
want, feeling into your desires, being grateful and then believing
that it is already yours.
To create a life of abundance and prosperity, there needs to be a
balance between giving and receiving. What are you giving? This
could be something tangible or intangible. If you sit quietly and
ask, What do I have to give?, the answer will come to you. It
could be something as simple as picking flowers from your yard
and giving them to a friend to brighten their day. Or it could be
offering forgiveness to someone who has wronged you, freeing
you both and allowing the two of you to move forward. By giving,
you are opening a void in which to receive.
There is so much in this world to be appreciated and experienced. Why would you consciously close yourself off to all the
abundance and prosperity floating like gold dust in the air just
waiting for you? Perhaps you feel unworthy or undeserving, or
you are filled with shame or pride. Perhaps youre holding onto
grudges, bitterness or anger. Whatever it is, it is time to let it go. Do
not wallow in the past for it cannot be changed. Do not worry
about the future for it will take care of itself. The only thing
that you can do is be present right here and now. Start today by

Understanding
spine stability
By Jed Downs
pine stabilization is a term often bandied around by providers for management of lower back pain, but what does it
mean and why might it be important?
First of all, the spine is not a very stable structure if it is stripped
of its musculature. It will bend and topple at about 20 pounds of
load. It becomes stable when it is supported by the guy wires of
the musculature, the casing of the thoracolumbar fascia and the
pressurized cylinder of the abdominal cavity, which is defined by

muscle and fascia. Guy wires are only effective if they are tensioned
to the right level. If the mast of a sailboat has guy wires that are too
tight on one side and a bit loose on the other, it will not only bend,
but it will not be stable in the face of the wind loads placed upon
it. So, too, is the case of a spine that has muscles that are weak
on one aspect or are too strong relative to the rest of the muscles
that support the spine. One can theoretically focus on one set of
muscles (e.g. the six-pack) to the point of creating imbalances that
may put an individual at risk for developing back pain.
The spine is not a mast; it is far more complex. Its linked segments
need to be stable in multiple positions with multiple different load
demands. Neuromotor control is essential. Neuromotor control
requires input from the position sensing nerves in the joint capsules,
ligaments and muscle tendon units, accurate processing by the
spinal cord and brain and an intact nervous system to deliver coordinated directions to the muscles to achieve stiffness and stability.
Back pain can come in many forms, some of which can be difficult to distinguish. Hypomobility may come from a joint being
stuck, scar tissue or some other form of tissue tension. The converse
is back pain from hypermobility. Hypermobility, as seen in dancers
and gymnasts, is a risk factor for back pain, but in this instance I refer
to hypermobility from tissue damage to a ligament or joint capsule
that provides support for the spine. Asymmetric movement stretches
tissues containing pain fibers and leads to muscle splinting and spasm.
Hyper and hypomobility predispose the development of degenerative
arthritic changes. Bone spurs to create stability in the face of instability.
Hypomobility at a specific spine segment is typically responsive
to mobilization or manipulation. Hypermobility, when associated with other areas of hypomobility, may partially respond to
freeing up the hypomobile areas which decreases stress at the

hypermobile site. Stabilization exercises seek to control hypermobility with strength and neuromotor control. Hypermobility
can be too severe or advanced; under those circumstances, prolotherapy or rare surgery might be indicated.
The presence of hypermobility and hypomobility disturb
neuromotor control. If spasm develops in a muscle, the opposing
muscle will be inhibited. To prepare for stabilization, regions of
tension often need to be stretched and relaxed to allow for activation of the weakened muscles.
There are two schools of thought about what type of exercise
is most appropriate for spine stabilization. One camp attempts to
isolate specific muscle groups that frequently become inhibited,
atrophy or lose neuromotor control of the transversus abdominis
and the multifidus muscles which have an impact on stabilization
at an individual spinal segment level, but which are important for
position sense. The other camp thinks that global stabilization
contracting muscles as functional units is more appropriate.
There is research data to support both to a degree, but I favor the
thought processes of McGill. All the muscles capable of supporting the spine are needed to support the spine in different positions.
Isolating important small muscles will not achieve the necessary
stiffness for stability. Moreover, muscles are interdependent and
dont act alone to achieve necessary function. That being said,
cuing is often necessary from a physical therapist or athletic trainer
to make sure all muscles can be recruited. Ultimately, exercise
training has to be taken from the floor into the vertical posture we
use for most of our daily functions as subtle changes in neuromotor control arise in relationship to gravitational forces.

donating
Shipping used garments
abroad can negatively impact
developing nations
By Lindsay Leno
help charities
while keeping
used goods out
of our landfills.
But people may
be unaware that
sometimes, donating
to charities that are large
and reach global status can
have a lasting, negative impact
on developing countries, as well as
on the resources that are used to ship
the goods long distances. To prevent any
negative impact, all it takes is just a little bit
of research to keep items local so that your donation plays a positive role in your community.
Sending garments and accessories to developing nations seems
like a good deed, at first glance. Despite the fact that these countries lag behind in many respects, it is a little-known fact that
developing nations actually depend upon their thriving textile
businesses to support their growing infrastructure. The textile
industry includes the farmers that provide the cotton, the weavers
that create fabrics, the dyers that individualize the fabrics, the
markets and merchants that sell the fabrics, as well as the patrons
who purchase and use the fabric.
Here in the States, we resell only 15-20 percent of used clothing in thrift stores. The remaining used garments are redistributed,
with 30 percent repurposed into industrial rags, 25 percent recycled for their fibers, and 45 percent shipped overseas as garments
for reuse, according to the article Ethical Style: Where Do My
Used Clothes Go? Sending and shipping thousands of pounds of
textile goods to developing nations directly impacts those countries textile industries as well as the individuals who rely on those
industries as their sole livelihood.

habit:
savoring
By Lysianne Unruh
Savor the moment: Start your day savoring. Head outside and
spend a moment or two barefoot, coffee cup in hand savoring the
warm, gentle air and the grass between your toes. This is not the
time to start making a list of all the yard work that needs to be
done, as tempting as it might be. Savoring is simply being able
to appreciate your yard in the state it is in, or the flowers in the
container garden on your deck.

Coconut oil
and its many
health benefits
By Nancy Bradley
oconut oil has long been associated with good health and
vitality throughout the world. People from the Philippines
have used it as a diet staple for thousands of years. Little
or no incidence of heart disease was found in native populations
until those populations began to switch to a diet containing more
grains and sugars.
In the 70s and 80s, some research was done on coconut oil that
caused it to fall out of favor with mainstream health organizations.
Coconut oil in its pure organic state has come back into favor with
many progressive and alternative health practitioners in recent
years. One main reason for this change in perspective is the fact
that early coconut oil research was done with coconut oil in an
altered, transfat state. Hydrogenated coconut oil is stripped of its
essential fatty acids and should be avoided no matter which nutritional philosophy one subscribes to. The coconut oil health professionals are talking about these days is organic, virgin, cold-pressed
coconut oil, and it can be found in most grocery and health food
stores.
Dr. Mary G. Enig Ph.D., FACN, is one of our countrys most
highly qualified lipid researchers. She is known for her early
knowledge of the dangers of transfats. She was one of the first in
the medical community to discover the horrible effects that transfats have on humans and animals. Now it is common knowledge
that transfats are one of the culprits of heart disease. Dr. Enig
continues to endorse coconut oil for various health reasons and
is currently conducting research on the benefits of coconut oil on
patients with HIV.
What makes organic, virgin coconut oil so impressive? Here are
just a few of its many benefits.
Coconut oil contains lauric acid, which is a substance found
in human breast milk. This is the substance that keeps infants
from getting infections.
72
means it gets used immediately for fuel and does not get stored
as unhealthy white fat in our systems.
Coconut oil is a delicious and natural fat that works well in
cooking, stir-frying and baking.
