The British Comparative Literature Association and the British Centre for Literary
Translation !niversity of East Anglia" are pleased to announce their continued #oint
sponsorship of a translation competition for $%%&' (ri)es *ill +e a*arded for the +est
unpu+lished literary translations from any lan&ua&e into English' Literary translation
includes poetry, prose, or drama, from any period' First pri)e- ./0%1 second pri)e- .$%%1
third pri)e- .2%%1 other entries may receive commendations'
The entry fee is five pounds sterling per entry' (ri)e3*inners *ill +e announced in July
$%%& on the BCLA *e+site, and pri)es *ill +e presented later in the year' 4inning
entries *ill +e pu+lished in full on the *e+site, and e5tracts from *inning entries are
eligi+le for pu+lication in the BCLA6s #ournal Comparative Critical Studies'
If you #oin the BCLA +et*een 2 August $%%/ and /2 January $%%&, you may su+mit one
entry free of charge' 7ote this on your entry form'

2' Entries must +e translations of e5tracts from" literary 'or,s, e'g' novel, short
story, essay, drama, poetry, prose' Translations from any period of the literature in
?uestion are eligi+le' The e5istence of copyright in any *or; places no restriction
on its translation +ut only, in some cases, on pu+lication of a translation'
Copyright clearance for *inning entries may +e effected after *inners are
announced'"
$' Entries must +e the original *or; of the translator and must not, as a *hole or in
part, have +een previously pu+lished, accepted for pu+lication, +roadcast, or
entered for any other competition' Entries may +e the collective *or; of any
num+er of translators'
/' Entries must +e su+mitted anonymously and each on a separate entry form' Each
entry must consist of a" one photocopy of the source te5t1 +" one photocopy of the
translated te5t1 c" the correctly completed entry form1 d" the correct entry fee'
&' The source te-t must carry the name of its author and the title, and must +e page3
num+ered' There must +e nothing on it *hich might identify the translator'
0' @our translation must +e dou+le3spaced and on A& sheets or near e?uivalent"' It
must not e5ceed $0 pages' An e5cerpt or e5cerpts from longer *or;s may +e
su+mitted +ut must not e5ceed this limit' The translation must +e page3num+ered
and carry a title and there must +e nothing on it *hich might identify the
translator'
A' The source te5t and the translation must each +e stapled or fi5ed *ith treasury
tags or similar' >o not send loose sheets' Te5ts must not +e stapled to one another
or to che?ues, +an;notes or entry forms'
B' The entry fee of .0 sterling per entry should +e sent either 2" in the form of a
che?ue dra*n on a British +an; paya+le to British Comparative Literature
Association, or $" an International 8oney Crder, or /" a postal order, or &" a
sterling +an;note' This last, though discouraged +y postal authorities, may +e
used in countries *here other forms of payment are difficult to arrange' Do not
send payments in any other currency or in any other form than the four
&iven'
D' Translations from different languages or from different genres should +e treated
as separate entries' A ma5imum of three entries may +e su+mitted per entrant'
E' There are no limitations on entrants *ith respect to age, nationality, place of
residence, or professional status' 7o organiser, or #udge, or their relatives, may
enter'
2%' If you *ish your entry to +e ac;no*ledged, please enclose a stamped, addressed,
self.seal envelope mar;ed Fac;F, and if you *ish to +e notified of results in July,
one mar;ed FresultsF' International response coupons are accepta+le'
22' 7o entries *ill +e returned, and correspondence cannot +e entered into once
entries have +een received as they are anonymised"'
2$' The decision of the Judges is final' 4e regret that no feed+ac; on entries can +e
provided'
2/' Any entries received after the closing date *ill, if eligi+le, +e entered into ne5t
year6s competition'
2&' Entry into the competition signifies acceptance of all the Rules'
