Dear Members.

May, what a beautiful

time of year it is. I hope
you are enjoying this
wonderful spring weather.

We will have our spring
tea on Sunday, May 19, at
1:30 PM. Please note
the change in location.
The First Baptist Church
is not available so we will
meet at the NCR Country
Club on Dogwood Trail.
There will be light snacks
and there is a charge, but
the Chapter is going to
cover the cost so that it
will be free for attendees.
I would greatly appreciate
an accurate count howev-
er, so please notify Trish
Hughes, 252-8112 or
ma.hughes@hotmail.com,
by May 10 if you plan to
be there.

At this meeting we will
award our Grant-in-Aid
scholarships to high
school seniors and recog-
nize members for any
outstanding accomplish-
ments. If you, or you
know of a member who
received any special
recognitions this year,
please let me know so
that I can share this good
news with the Chapter.

We lost two of our long
time members in April.
Jennifer McConnell died
April 2 and Erma Maloon
passed on April 22. Both
will be remembered in
our January necrology
service.

My thanks to Linda Har-
rison for representing me
at the Alpha Delta State
Convention. Pi Chapter
earned a Gold Key Honor
this year for satisfying 15
requirements designated
by the state organization.
Be sure to save the date
for our August meeting
at Aullwood on Thurs-
day, Aug. 8. Please invite
a guest. With the dinner, a
great setting, and always a
great program it is one of
our most popular meet-
ings. Potential members
or just friends are always
welcome.

As always, thank you for
your continued support of
Pi Chapter.

75th Anniversary Convention
Judy Gebhart and Linda Harrison attended the 75
th
Anniversary-
Convention for Alpha Delta State on April 12-14, 2013. Pi Chap-
ter had collected 210 books (6 boxes) which they took to the
convention. Here are the numbers in each category:
Infant---K 70
Grades 1-3 45
Grades 4-6 45
YA (7-12) 50

The total number of books donated by members was 6,000
books. The committee had hoped for 1,000. Six childrens hos-
pitals (Akron, Cincinnati, Cleveland, Columbus, Dayton, and To-
ledo) received 1,000 books. A representative from Columbus
Childrens spoke to us and said that their hospital gave 135,000
books to patients last year. She was very happy to receive this
donation.

This was Judys last convention as State Parliamentarian. She
has served 6 years. Linda Harrison served on the States Strate-
gic Plan Committee and she helped the committee chairs, Jane
Meese and Beth Archer, to give a presentation.

There were 400 DKG members at the convention. It was a won-
derful celebration of 75 years. This event fosters fellowship and
camaraderie among the states teachers. It is good for rejuve-
nating the soul and feel that you are not alone in the changing
world of education.

This year Pi Chapter awarded two $500 Ellen Jane Porter Classroom Enhancements grants; one to Suzanne
Mitolo the other to Kate Brookshire. The purpose of these grants is to support Pi Chapter members, and to
serve as a recruitment incentive for future members. The program was developed to honor the memory of
benefactor, Ellen Jane Lorenz Porter, who led a wonderfully productive and varied life with creativity, self-
improvement and commitment to her passions.

Ellen Jane attended Wellesley College and majored in music. Her music teaching career began in Akron,
Ohio. Next she went to Paris to study musical composition under the famed teacher, Nadia Boulanger. In
1932 Ellen Jane joined the Lorenz Music Publishing Company, founded by her grandfather E. S. Lorenz, as a
cub editor where she wrote many original musical compositions. She became Editor in Chief in 1940, a po-
sition she held until her retirement from Lorenz in 1963. After retiring she went back to college and earned
her Masters Degree from Wittenberg University. Then at age 71, she earned her Ph. D in Sacred Music
from Union Graduate School and was awarded an honorary Doctor of Music from the University of Dayton.
Ellen Jane continued to compose music until her death in December of 1996 and is remembered as a re-
spected authority on hand bells, which she helped bring to prominence in the United States. Ellen Jane was
a devoted and generous member of Pi Chapter. Below you will find a brief description of both projects.

Operation i.P.a.d. (I Produce art digitally) - Kate Brookshire
The goal of this project is to broaden the understanding, exposure and awareness of the arts with art stu-
dents ranging from 5
th
through 8
th
grade. The project will accomplish the integration of visual arts with the
latest technology by involving a wide range of students of all academic abilities, and others will be exposed
to their artistic contributions. Another goal is to provide students with the opportunity to utilize a variety of
electronic tools to pursue digital artistic endeavors by accessing the latest innovations in technology via a
class iPad. They will also apply and extend their artistic and technological knowledge and skills as they are
involved in the hands-on creation of their products. The art program was reduced this year for all students.
The ability for students to gain hands-on exposure to electronic art techniques will help compensate for
missed art instruction due to recent budget cuts. Grant funds will be used to purchase an iPad with Wi-Fi
capabilities.
PVS Sensory GardenSuzanne Mitolo
The goal of the PVS Sensory Garden is to promote sensory integration specifically for our pre-K through 1
st

grade special needs population, which is approximately 12% of our school. While this project will make a
huge impact on these students it will also benefit the rest of students in our building as they explore the
five senses. Improving sensory skills will enhance writing, communication, observation, critical thinking,
creativity, and appreciation for the natural environment. This project will be dedicated to four special
needs students who have passed away since we have been in this building. We would like to honor them
with experiences they enjoyed when they were with us. Funds from this grant will be used to purchase ma-
terials to build the raised planting table, plants, sensory objects including a large chime, and mulch.
