1. Candace Pauchnick, CUE 2009 conference presentation in Palm Springs, CA


“San Diego, China and Others Collaborate through Email, Blogs, and Web
Conferences” Candace shares highlights of her seven years of experience pairing her
students in San Diego with students in China and other places. This features both
video of Candace and her PowerPoint slides. She provides a lot of practical
suggestions for using blogs and pen pals with students in a high school language arts
classroom. She also shares sources of free online books. The first 29 minutes are one
presentation, and the time after that is a second presentation, both about how she uses
ePals. Tim DiScipio appears in a portion of the video.

3. The Power of Global Thinking. Kevin Honeycutt interviews Adina Popa, a


technology resource teacher from Loudoun County Public Schools in Virginia, we
discuss ways that teachers integrate ePals in classrooms and digital literacy as well as
global understanding. We also discuss the intrinsic motivation that comes along for
the ride when we allow them to connect. She brings great enthusiasm to the idea of
empowering kids with global connections.

6. Why use technology? New Literacies researchers Ian O’Byrne and Greg McVerry
from the University of Connecticut share ideas for 21st century learning, problem-
based learning, and reading comprehension from the ePals conference 2008. They
recommend empowering students to help increase learning in a three-phase approach,
based on their research. Dr. Kari Stubbs from ePals also contributes ideas about
teacher professional development.
