GENERAL

1.1

SCOPE
This document represents the FEA Analysis for Hull MEG Storage Tank of Malikai EPC
TLP Project. The force induced due to sloshing impact from CFD analysis will be used in
the FEA Analysis in order to evaluate strength integrity of tank and structure.

METHODOLOGY

1.3.1

FINITE ELEMENT MODEL

The analysis is based on a three dimensional (3D) model generated by ANSYS. The tank
modelling is refer to drawing M2-237a/T-5601A&B/01/G.A.
The geometry and element type to be using for the modelling is solid type. The plate is
model using 3-D-solid elements with minimum volume with 8 nodes.

1.3.2

MATERIAL
Material strength properties used in this report are obtained from ASME Part IID, Table 1A,
and are suitable for Tank component.
The type of material use are Isotropic material.

1.3.3

MESHING
In general, design analysis tools are demanding with respect to the geometric integrity.
During the 3D modelling process these integrity requirements may not be met and may
even go unnoticed. Example of integrity error include small gaps, overlaps or overhangs
which can easily be overlooked from 3D modelling point of view. However, they can very
troublesome for mesh. So before meshing the geometry clean-up is done, parts that have
very small features with respect to the overall model dimensions and do not play a
substantial role in the simulation results can be avoided or supressed.
Following are the details mesh to be setup for the model of tank
1

Type of Meshing Automatic Method Physically preferences Mechanical with

Relevance 0 (-ve (-100) for faster solution and +ve (100) for increased accuracy)

Sizing with relevance centre Medium with Minimum Edge Length 11.0mm (Defaults)

Inflation Option is Smooth Transition (Transition Ratio 0.272 and maximum layer 5)

Shape checking follow standard mechanical by program.

Second order element (10 nodes) shall be used for the tetrahedral mesh

Structural Weight
The self-weights of all the simulated Hull MEG Storage Tank steel members were
generated using the ANSYS program with the corresponding load cards input in
basic load case Hull MEG Storage Tank. Gravity of 9806mm/s2 is applied to capture
the weight of the structure

Liquid Weight
Mass of the liquid shall be apply at the liquid area. This mass shall be captured by
ANSYS as weight when the Gravity and Acceleration are applied to the analysis.

Liquid Static Head and Vent Height

Liquid static head and vent height will be added in the analysis as hydrostatic
pressure.

Nozzle Load
The nozzle is modelled as a part with the storage. The reaction loads are applied at
the top of the nozzle. The reaction loads of the nozzle should be considered during,
operating condition, survival condition and extreme condition

Vessel Acceleration
Acceleration is applied in the ANSYS to the analysis in order to simulate the
movement of the vessel to the tank. This acceleration is automatically applied at the
COG of the system by ANSYS. The acceleration should be considered during,
operating condition, survival condition and extreme condition.

Displacement
The TOC of oval neck will experience displacement in horizontal and vertical
direction due to relative deflection between TOC and Deck 3.

Reaction Force at TOC of Oval Nozzle

There will be force in vertical and horizontal direction and also bending moment
applied at the oval neck.

Sloshing Impact
Force induced due to sloshing impact will be included in the analysis. The force is
generated based on CFD report.

1.3.5 BOUNDARY CONDITION

The support of the tank is fixed at the bottom. The reaction loads of the analysis can be
extracted at the fixed area when the analysis is converged. The reaction force will also
verified by manual calculation for each case.
1.3.6 POST PROCESSING
After the finite element model is solved, the maximum deflection, force reaction and moment
and Von-Mises stress will be recorded. The result will be further review to ensure it is within
allowable limits.
