What Kind of Worship Style Does
Bethesda Have?

Have you ever thought about that queston? Have you
ever invited someone to church and didnt know what to
say when they asked you what kind of music the church
has? I thought I would take a minute this month to share
my vision for musical style at Bethesda and also try to an-
swer that queston for you.

Describing a churchs worship style can be a very confus-
ing mater. Ofen, when churches talk about music minis-
try, they use two diferent terms: traditonal and contem-
porary. Unfortunately these words are defned in so
many diferent ways that labeling worship as one or the
other ends up creatng confusion. We all imagine difer-
ent things when we hear these words. When some hear
the word traditonal they picture hymns and older songs.
Others picture an organ and regal music. Contemporary is
ofen used to describe music that has come out in the last
30 years. For someone in their 60s, a song that came out
30 years ago is stll a new contemporary song. For some-
one in their 20s, a 30 year old song is old, or traditonal.

To make things even more complicated, in an efort to
make everyone happy traditonal and contemporary
are put together into a blended style. Unfortunately,
people have diferent ideas of the perfect rato that is best
for such a blend. A congregaton can call their worship
blended because they sing a contemporary song two or
three tmes a month, but when someone else visits they
would describe that service as traditonal. And thus a
never ending cycle of not-so-descriptve words begins.

So, in describing what kind of worship Bethesda has I try
to avoid using all three of those words. When asked how I
try to select songs I ofen will say that I just try to pick
good music. I try to keep an open mind, listen to a wide
variety of musical styles, and pick music that comple-
ments the Word that is preached. There is no magic num-
ber of hymns I try to sing every week, and is no weekly
quota of new songs. Like I said, I just want to sing good
music, and more importantly, music that is centered and
focused on the Word of God.

Marriage Matters/Family Matters
The above sermon series ttle is intended
to be provocatve: Is it a simple statement
of fact or is it a bold exclamaton?
Actually it is both. We need to under-
stand the maters of marriage and family from Gods per-
spectve. Why? Because, especially in todays dangerous
climate, the maters of marriage and family really do
mater!

Rather than get entangled in the many well-meaning and
helpful sociological arguments for traditonal marriage
and family, our primary focus will be the biblical defense.
And our primary scripture text will be from our current
Sunday morning study in Ephesians. For the months of
June, July, and August (with a couple of breaks along the
way), I plan to slow down the pace as we journey through
this marvelous leter from the Apostle Paul as we enter
his secton addressing marriage and family.

In more of a big-picture way (with strong awareness of
the context of Pauls message), we will spend the frst few
weeks covering: The Patern of Marriage, The Power of
Marriage, The Pledge of Marriage, The Purpose of
Marriage, The Progression of Marriage, and The Partners
in Marriage. From that last-mentoned topic, we will then
examine more closely The Spirit-Filled Wife and The
Spirit-Filled Husbandaddressing biblical roles and re-
sponsibilites. Finally, we will move into the parent-child
secton: Kingdom Kids and Parentng 101.

I realize that with vacaton opportunites this summer
(including our own plans), it may be difcult to atend
each Sunday. But make every efort to atend when in
town, and if away do secure a CD or DVD. As a pastor who
loves his fock and wants the very best for our families, I
just cant emphasize enough how important this series
will beespecially in a culture that is leveling its strong-
est artllery to destroy the sanctty of the homeGods
frst line of defense in a fallen world, and therefore Sa-
tans frst line of ofense and atack. Even if you are single,
living alone, a senior adult, or have a terrifc marriage and
family, we all need to be together, supportng one anoth-
er in this study together. Also, important principles on
inter-personal relatonships that apply to all of us will be
gleaned in the course of this study.

With Vacaton Bible School and many other opportunites
coming, lets, by His grace, make this indeed a B.I.G. sum-
mer for His glory!

Excited to announce
Bethesda's Awana program
is expanding to include 6th - 8th grade! Please
begin praying for the families we will be ministering
to in the coming year, especially those God has
placed on your heart to invite. I could never say
enough about the overwhelming support of the
congregaton here, or the level of excitement and
commitment of our leaders. Serving alongside so
many wonderful people has been such a blessing as
we strive to build another generaton of families
who will Know, Love, and Serve the Lord!

Word of mouth is always the best advertse-

Sunday school and children church
literature- Please place your old Sunday
school and children church literature in the
marked box in the workroom. This recy-
cled literature is used to help pastors and
laypeople teach and disciple fellow
believers. Studies show that 80 percent of
Christan believers outside of the U.S. have
no Christan literature available to them.
YOUTH BASKET AUCTION
June 29, 2014

To help raise money to send
our students to summer camp
(Centrifuge at Ridgecrest,
NC), the youth are hosting
Bethesda's fifth annual basket auction.
We would like for each Sunday School
class, or other group, to prepare one or
more special baskets and place them in the
foyer. This year, we ask that the value of
each basket not exceed $50. (You may
want to have several baskets of lesser
value). The more baskets we have, the
better. We suggest you be very creative,
keeping within this price range.
Next, we ask you to shop around and find
the baskets on which you want to bid.
When you find the basket or baskets you
want, place what you feel is an appropriate
starting bid on the list attached to the
basket. (Baskets can be dropped off in the
church foyer beginning June 15th). The
auction will end on Sunday, June 29th with
a good, old-fashioned, hamburger and hot
dog cook-out for lunch. So join in the fun
and help send our youth to camp.
