Well, if youve been paying attention to the international news recently, youve probably noticed that the environment has become a global concern. There are no easy solutions to what has become an increasingly complex, intertwined, and ambiguous set of social and scientic issues. The world needs people who have united a sense of purpose with a rst-class education and are prepared to tackle modern environmental issues. Whether assessing the threat of pollutants to an ecosystem, or the treatment needed to ensure a safe water supply, environmental engineers are playing crucial roles. And thats where Cornells College of Engineering comes in. Well provide you with an education that will allow you to be a voice of reason and take a leading role as the next generation of environmental issues emerges and is ultimately resolved. Environmental engineers seek ways to mitigate impact on the environment and to protect public health. They analyze land-, water-, and air-pollution; design pollution- and hazardous- wastecontrol facilities; and oversee the construction and operation of these facilities. They play important roles in city planning, developing water-resource systems, and designing and operating other systems fundamental to preserving our quality of life and the quality of the environment. They are also involved in the development and management of renewable energy sources. Environmental engineers design systems that can turn waste into electricity. Environmental engineers design solutions to problems associated with land, water, and air quality with long- term sustainability and global change in mind. At Cornell your education will revolve around current problems, so youll have the opportunity to act on issues that professional engineers face every day. Youll work closely with faculty membersestablished leaders in the eldwho are addressing cutting-edge issues in their research and consulting. In addition to studying chemistry and physics, as an environmental engineering student youll study microbiology. Youll learn to synthesize biological, chemical, and engineering principles to model the effects of human activities on water quality, or to help you design water- and wastewater-treatment systems. In laboratories youll examine current environmental problems, many of them the focus of faculty research; youll also take a course in environmental systems. The Environmental Engineering major is jointly offered by faculty members in Biological and Environmental Engineering (BEE) and in Civil and Environmental Engineering (CEE). Students wishing to pursue an M.Eng. in Environmental Engineeering can solve problems that are closely related to either Civil Engineering or Biological Engineering. On the Civil Engineer- ing sideclean air and water, efcient transportation systems, urban renewal, rural developmentcivil and environ- mental engineers strive for harmony and balance between the constructed human environment and the natural world. Every aspectincluding design, development, creation, operation, and renewalis directed at optimization of the human expe- rience while preserving the health of the natural environment. On the Biological Engineering side, the rapidly growing eld is where engineering practice meets quantitative biology, where engineers work toward practical, sustainable solutions to a wide variety of human health and environmental challenges. Whether you study biofuels develop- ment, environmental agriculture, soil and water systems, or applied molecular bioengineering, as an M.Eng. graduate, youll be highly sought after by employers, in both the public and private sectors. Students can apply either through the Department of Biological and Environmental Engineering or the School of Civil and Environmental Engineering. Check out www.engineering.cornell.edu/meng
