the topography, San
Jos de Ocoa is an
extremely interesting
province for vacation.

San Jos de Ocoa is a province of the
Dominican Republic, and also the name
of the provinces capital city. It was split
from Peravia on January 1, 2000.
The province has three municipalities
and three municipal districts:
Rancho Arriba
Sabana Larga
San Jos de Ocoa
El Pinar (M.D)
La Cinaga (M.D)
Nizao-Las Auyamas (M.D)
The province has an area of 855.40
square kilometers and is 475 meters
above sea level.
The people from the province is called
Ocoeo.

San Jos de Ocoa Province
History
San Jos de Ocoa is
a Dominican province
located on the southern
side of the Cordillera
Central. Its capital city is
called San Jos de Ocoa
too.
Though San Jos de
Ocoa is a new province,
its origins begin with
the colonial age and
its Taino name was El
Maniel. Its a high place
in the mountains and for
that reason the runaway
slaves chose it to hide
because of the hiking
difficulty of it. The city
was founded by these
slaves.
Then we can say that it
place means: freedom,
work, solidarity, and
worker people.
San Jos de Ocoa
means Beauty in the
Mountains.

relationship because their parents didnt
accept it. Some families followed the
couple, though for economic reasons,
not for love. Around 1810 the place had
almost 10 villages.
San Jos de Ocoa has an interesting
love history. Andrs Pimentel and
Luca Tejeda was a young couple from
Ban. They escaped to the beautiful El

Geological evolution
There are two periods in the geological
evolution of the province: The
Cretaceous and the Eocene.
Life zone
The life zone of the province is
subtropical rainforest and low mountain
rain forest.
Fertility
Almost all the soils are for forestry,
some few portions are able to be used
for grass, other portions are used for
agriculture.
Relief
San Jos de Ocoa is the only province in
Dominican Republic that is completely
placed in a mountain system, The
Cordillera Central. All its territory is
over 400 meters high and its highest
mount is La Formacin with 2,340
meters high. Its capital is over 700
meters high.
Weather
The weather of the province is
temperate because of its height above
sea level. Its annual temperature is 23.5
degrees Celsius and its average rainfall
per year is 1,074 mm.
Hydrography
Ocoa is the name of the river that
crosses the province; it is a Tano
word that means a place with many
mountains. There are a many rivers
and streams, such as Nizao, Ocoa and
Banilejo.
Language
Its official language is Spanish, in some
areas it has the particular accent from
the southern region.

Population
The province isnt crowded, its density
is 120 people per square kilometer
meter and its population is 59,544.
Education
There are many schools, but school
attendance is very low and 91% of
students have repeated a year.
Tourism
The topography of the province is
mountainous so the weather is pretty
cool almost all the time, with an average
temperature of 23.5 degrees Celsius.
The visitants can find a lot of thing such
as horses, bicycles, ATVs, hiking, and
more. The principal attractions of Ocoa
are Rancho Arriba, Rancho Francisco,
El Salto de los Pinos, El Salto de Parra,
El Parque Central, La Chorrera and
Quemado Rancho Arriba. The festivities
of Ocoa attract tourists and dominicans,
these start on January 21, ending a
week later with a big party.
Culture
The food is extremely healthy, being an
agricultural community, with several
restaurants and entertainment centers.
Its traditional music is el merengue. Its
typical meal is stew, it is made of green
beans and rice.

Luis Quinn
Personality
Jose Luis Quinn Cassidy was born in
Newcastle, England, on January 12,
1928, and died in Fort Lauderdale,
Florida on October 11, 2007. He was
called the protector of the poor.
He was ordained a
priest by Cardinal
McGuigan in
December 1952 ,
and assigned as a
missionary priest
in the Dominican
Republic in 1953.
Between 1953
and 1965 he
was assigned as
pastor in several
Dominican towns and returned for a time
to Canada. In 1965 he became director
of the parish San Jos , San Jos de
Ocoa, He stayed in Ocoa for the next 42
years, until his death. During that time
he lived in the Casa Parroquial , a
wooden house next to the parish, which
was found to reach the village in 1965
, the doors were always open , and in
which the father Luis received , without
exception, to the countless people who
came to visit him: from the presidents of
the Dominican Republic to the humblest
peasant.
Father Luis Quinn was responsible for
the construction and paving of 600
kilometers of roads; the installation
of 60 kilometers of irrigation systems;
2000 housing construction; planting
12 million trees for reforestation;
69 the construction of schools; the
construction of 11 clinics; build 13
community centers; the design and
construction of latrines; the construction
of a hydroelectric dam; and conclude
countless educational projects.
