    MSC Nastran and MD Nastran were originally separate finite element analysis programs that merged over time. MSC Nastran was initially only capable of running solutions 101-200, while MD Nastran could run 101-200 as well as more advanced 400, 600, and 700 series solutions. In 2006, MSC Nastran was renamed to MD Nastran, and a new MSC Nastran was created that only ran 101-200 solutions. By 2012, the programs had fully merged under the single name MSC Nastran, which could now perform all solution types. The key difference was the range of analysis techniques each program was capable of over time, with MD Nastran offering more advanced options before the full integration of the codebases

    Answer 2: For SOL 101-200 jobs, MSC Nastran and MD Nastran are the same.
    Any version of MSC Nastran or MD Nastran is capable of running a .bdf file where
    the solution sequence is any of the following:
    SOL 101
    SOL 103
    SOL 105
    SOL 106
    SOL 107
    SOL 108
    SOL 109
    SOL 110
    SOL 111
    SOL 112
    SOL 129
    SOL 144
    SOL 145
    SOL 146
    SOL 153
    SOL 159
    SOL 187
    SOL 200
    To a really good extent, any tutorials or manuals labeled either MSC or MD Nastran
    are pretty much the same. If you are using SOL 400, 600 or 700 continue reading
    further down.
    If you are using any of the following solution sequences, you must be careful:
    SOL 400
    SOL 600
    SOL 700
    To make explaining as simple as possible, I present a timeline of MSC Nastran and
    MD Nastran below. I'm still smiling realizing this was a mitosis

    2006-2011: In these years, 2 nastrans emerge. MSC Nastran is renamed to MD
    Nastran. MD Nastran can run SOL 101-200 and SOL 400, 600 and 700 jobs. A new
    nastran dubbed MSC Nastran is created and can run SOL 101-200 jobs.

    2012-2013: In these years, the 2 nastran are merged. MD Nastran is renamed MSC
    Nastran. This newly merged MSC Nastran can run SOL 101-200 and SOL 400, 600

    Much of this relates to the 1999 acquisition of Marc by MSC, which added a
    number of advanced solution sequences. My understanding is that the biggest
    success story of this acquisition is the adoption of SOL 600 (implicit nonlinear)
    to replace the rather finicky SOL 106.
