intonation.

Read aloud the dialog below. Be sure to read the sentences with the proper
intonation.

One fine Sunday morning, Vinces family decided to spend their time
together. Everyone agreed to go on a fishing trip instead of the mall.

Vince: How long will it take us to catch a fish, Father?
Father: Soon my son. You must keep your rod steady.
Vince: I am trying, Father.
Mother: Youre doing great, Vince. Young boys should be patient.
Vincent: Young boys should be patient? But mother weve been sitting
here for hours.
Father: We intend to sit here all day until we catch a fish. (laughing)
Vince: You are laughing again! I wouldnt give up!
Mother: He is about to give up. (Mother winks at Father)
Father: Is he about to give up?
Vince: Never! Im sure to have my first catch today. I shall not stop
until I catch a fish.
Father: Thats our boy. Oh look! Vince, theres a beautiful bird over
There.

4

Vince looked to the direction opposite his Mothers. Just then Father
signaled mother. Mother quickly released five big and alive fish into the man-
made pond at the back of their old ancestral home.
After a while, Vinces rod heavy and moved.
Vince: Father, Mother I think I caught a fish!
Father: Pull the rod, Vince. Pull it! Sure indeed! It was a fish!
Vince: I did it!
Vince was overwhelmed. He was so proud of it.

Mother and Father smiled at each other knowingly. That day, they have taught
their son to be patient and persevering.

Read the questions to a classmate and give the answers orally.
Who went on a fishing trip?
What lesson did Mother and Father wish to teach their son?
Do you also spend quality time with your family?
What other things can you do together with your family?

Read the dialog aloud with the proper intonation. Take note of the underlined
sentences.
Mother: Youre doing great, Vince. Young boys should be patient.
Vince: Young boys should be patient? But Mother, weve been
sitting here for hours.

Focus your attention on these two sentences. At first, they may appear to
be the same but they actually convey different meanings.

Mother: Young boys should be patient.
Vine: Young boys should be patient?

What intonation should you use to deliver Mothers statement?
The period after Mothers dialog denotes that she was simply making a
statement. You have learned previously that statements are delivered with a
falling intonation.

Say Mothers statement again. Use the falling intonation in doing so.

5

What intonation should you use to deliver Vinces line in the dialog?

Note that there is a question mark after the sentence although no
interrogative ( a word used for asking questions such as what, when, where, etc.)
is present. Vinces line in the dialog means that hes asking for confirmation.

A rising intonation is used for statements asking for confirmation or
statements expressing doubt and sometimes sarcasm.

Deliver Vinces dialog again with a rising intonation.

Always bear in mind that

Intonation distinguishes changes in meaning of statements. A
falling intonation is used for plain statements while a statement said
with as rising intonation asks for confirmation, expresses doubt and
sometimes even a sarcasm.

6

A. Read the sentences aloud. Identify whether it is said as a plain
statement or it is doubtful or expressing confirmation. Draw an arrow
pointing upward ( ) for rising intonation and an arrow pointing
downward ( ) for falling intonation. Do this in your notebook.
