In my previous posts on values and ethics in business, Ive shared some great suggestions
from Giving Voice to Values: How to Speak Your Mind When You Know Whats Right
(Yale University Press, 2010), by management expert Mary C. Gentile, PhD. She asserts
that most of us fail to take appropriate values-based actions when we see questionable prac-
tices.
The author suggests we consider the following when seeking alternative solutions to
questionable decisions:
Long- and short-term thinking/goals
Your organizations broader purpose (not just the immediate conflict)
The assumed definition of competitive advantage
How you can be an agent of continuous improvement and actionable alternatives vs. the
complaint department/morality police.
Slippery slopes that can become future ethical cliffs
How the game metaphor affects business culture and decision-making (Its just how the
game is played)
The costs to each affected party (and how to mitigate them to make your argument more
appealing)
Whether your target audience is pragmatic (vs. idealistic or opportunistic) and how you
can help them find ways to do the right thing
As you assess the personal risks youll take when going against a leader or the group con-
sensus, be sure to weigh the costs of not speaking up:
What could happen if you fail to raise objections?
Preserve Rationality
When a situation impinges on our deepest values, we often leap to a place of righteousness
and passion. While its tempting to appeal to morality and ethics, youll likely be more
persuasive and constructive if your appeal is simpler and less emotional.
Develop alternative actions, and present your case calmly and rationally. Dont remain
silent when you care about an issue. Embrace the courage that comes from having a
strategy grounded in reality and reason.
We have a choice to speak up when faced with questionable actions one that becomes
more easily accessible when we practice giving voice to our values.

or didnt take. Imagine some alternatives.
Prepare yourself by discussing the issues with a trusted peer, mentor or professional coach.

If you are a first-time home buyer, friends and family members may be quick to give advice
about the home-purchasing process. As a result, there could be several home buying myths
that may have found refuge in the back of your mind. Unfortunately, that friendly advice
can help perpetuate some of the most common home-buying myths especially when it
comes to credit.
Home-buying credit myths
Myth #1: You need perfect credit to purchase a home.
Fact: It is true that an individuals credit score has an impact on the mortgage loan approval
process and ultimately the resulting interest rate. However, perfect credit is not needed to
secure approval for a mortgage loan. While credit scores can range widely, the higher your
credit score, the more options you will have to find a mortgage with favorable interest rates.
Myth #2: Lenders have free rein in sharing your personal credit information.
Fact: Not so. For a lender to share your information with an affiliate (any entity that is
involved in making, holding or investing in bank loans or credit extensions), generally you
must first give your permission. State and federal privacy laws are in place to help protect
your personal information.
Myth #3: Lenders only use one scoring model that determines creditworthiness.
Fact: There are a number of credit-scoring models used to determine credit risk in todays
marketplace. For example, many lenders use the VantageScore as one model for deter-
mining credit worthiness. While scoring models vary, many of the same factors influence
your credit score, including your payment history and your level of debt.
Get Pre-approved
Before you start hunting for a house, determine what you can comfortably afford to pay
each month. Even if you are pre-approved for a mortgage, you may want to consider if the
mortgage is affordable. Preapproval allows you to determine how much home you can shop
for and afford. It may also give you an advantage when it comes time to negotiate your
home mortgage. Understanding the factors that are important to a mortgage lender can
improve your chances of finding your dream home. In the end there are more and more
lenders coming into the industry and more non-traditional lenders doing portfolio loans. We
