onthespecificTsukaima.Theyareallcapableofspeech,althoughtheyaretypicallyeitherinvisibleto
normalpeople(withtheexceptionofpotentialMagicalGirls),orappearcompletelynormaltothem.
Youma
Themainantagonistsofthegame,darkmonstersthatpreyuponordinarypeople.Theycomeinall
sizesandshapes,afewoftheconstantsbeingthattheyarehostiletohumanity,andthattheyareutterly
immunetoanythingnonmagical(atraitothermagicuserstendtoshare),andinmostcases,completely

thiselement,usingittotheirbiddingtostrikedownyoumaanddefendthemselves.
ThenextthingyoullneedtochooseaboutyourMagicalGirlishermagicalpower.Thisis
somethinguniquethegirlcandowithmagic.Thesepowersdonotprovidecombatbonuses,andbarring
unusualcircumstancesshouldnotbeusefulinafight.Powerscanrangefromtheusefultothemundane.
FlightandConjuringfoodarebothexamplesofvalidpowers.Thisshouldbedistinctfromyourelement,
youcanalreadymanipulateyourelementwithoutaspecificpower.

Archetypes
EveryMagicalGirlbelongstooneofthreearchetypes.Thisdefineswhatareaofcombatandmagic
thegirlisbestat,providingbonusesinherareaofspecialization.TherearethreearchetypesthatMagical
Girlscanchoosefrom:Striker,GuardianandTactician.StrikersspecializeinbringingYoumadowninthe
mostdirectmethodpossible,wieldingpowerfulmagicalattacks.Guardiansarereliable,resilientfighters,
skilledinprotectingallies,asthenamewouldsuggest.Tacticiansareflexiblefighters,skilledinsupporting

NormalAttributes
Normalattributesrepresentyourmagicalgirlsabilitieswhenitcomestodealingwithnonmagical
matters.Therearefourofthese:Physical,Finesse,Social,andFortitude.Physicalisyourphysical
strengthandspeed,Finesseisyourabilitywithfinemotorskillsandnoticingthings,Socialisyourabilityto
socializeanddealwithpeople,andFortituderepresentsyourgeneralresilienceandstrengthofmindto
endurepainoradversity.
Todetermineyournormalattributes,distribute21pointsbetweenthem.Nonormalattributemaybe
below3orabove7.Keepinmindthateverynormalattributehasusesbothinandoutsideofcombat
situations.
MagicalAttributes
MagicalGirlspowersaregovernedbythreeattributes:Magic,Heart,andFury.Magicisyourpure
magicalpowerandfinesse,Heartisyourcapacityforlove,affection,camaraderieandotherpositive
emotions,andFuryisyourabilitytosummonupangerandviolence.
Togenerateyourmagicalattributes,divideatotalof18pointsamongthethreeattributes.Youmay
nothaveanymagicalattributesbelow3orabove8.Keepinmindthatsomeabilitiesandsituationscan
forceyoutorollagainstattributesyoudidntexpecttouse.
Overcharge
AsyourMagicalGirlusesmagicandfightsyouma,shewillgainOvercharge.Overcharge
accumulatesseparatelyforeachMagicalAttribute(soyouhaveseparatepoolsofMagic,Heart,andFury
overcharge).
BaseResolve
MagicalGirlsstartwithaBaseResolveof18.ThisisyourMagicalGirlscapacityforwithstanding
damageinmagicalbattles.Aftertheendofeverycombatscene,yourresolvereturnstoitsmaximum.Note
thatlosingresolveisnotsupposedtorepresentinjuriesoutsideofbattle(SeetheLingeringWoundand
DebilitatingWoundfalloutforthat),simplyhowcloseanygivenentityistodefeatwithinacombat.Upon
revertingtonormalform,MagicalGirlstypicallyfindthemselvesunharmed.
FinishingAttack
Eachmagicalgirlalsostartswithonespecialmagicalattackthatisparticularlypowerful.Tocreate
yourfinishingattack,selectoneoftheattacktypesbelow,andfinallygiveitanameandassociatedfluff.
YoumayuseeachFinishingAttackyouknowonceperbattleasanormalaction,bytaking1point
ofOverchargeonAttack.However,ifyouhavealreadyusedoneFinishingAttackthisfightandareusing
yoursecondone,youmusttake2pointsofOverchargeonAttack,asyoustrainyourmagicalpowerstothe
breakingpoint.
GrandBarrage:Yourattackactsasaspecial,unclashableMultipleTargetAttack,withnoneofthe
penaltiesnormallyapplied.Alternately,youmayfocusyourfireononetarget,resultinginanattackthatis
verydifficulttodefendagainstwithanythingbutrawpower.Makeasingleunclashableattackwitha+4
bonustodamage.YourtargetmaynotuseReactionsontheDefensechallengeagainstthisattack,though
theymayuseReactionsaftertheattackhassucceededanddealtdamage(orfailed.)
ArcanePrison:Yourattackholdsyourtargetinplace,imprisoningitinamanifestationofyourelement.Ifit
hits,thetargetmustremaininoneplaceandcannotattackuntilitcanspendaturntomakeaTN15

DisruptingAssault:Yourattackdisruptstheenemysmagicalpowers,makingthemtemporarilyweaker.If
ithits,thetargetrollsonefewerdiceonitsnextMagicalChallengewitheachattribute.
SunderingBlow:Yourattackislikeanunstoppableforce,eventhestrongestdefensecanonlyreduceitto
aglancinghit.Ifyourattackhits,itdealsanadditional1d6damage,butifitmissesorissuccessfully
Clashed,itstilldealshalfofthedamageaNormalAttackwouldhavedealt(roundeddown).
FinalImpact:Yourattackisespeciallypotent,andinflictsanadditional1d6+3damage.
MasterStrike:Yourattackisveryaccurate,allowingittohitenemiesthatmightnormallybeabletoevade

WilloftheProtector:Whilenotexactlyafinishingattack,thisotherwisefunctionslikeone,exceptit
usestheSupportattributeinsteadoftheAttackattribute.WilloftheProtectorallowsyoutouseReviveon
anothermagicalgirlsbehalf,withtheexceptionthatyouaretheonemakingtherollsandtakingthe
overchargefromtheSupportchallenge,andthattheyrevivewith3moreResolvethantheywouldnormally.
Alternately,youmaycastyourprotectiveenergyoverallofyouralliesandyourself,whichrestores3
Resolvetoeachofthem,aswellasgrantsthema+2bonusontheirnextDefensechallenge.
Riposte:ThisfinishingattackmaybeactivatedasaReaction,aftertakingdamagefromanenemys
successfulmagicalattack.Insteadofmakinganattackasnormal,rollanAttackchallengewiththeTN
beingequaltotheenemysresultonthesuccessfulattack.Onasuccess,halvethefinaldamagethatthe
attackdealstoyou,anddeal2damagetotheattacker.Eachraise(uptoamaximumof3)reducesthe
attacksdamageby1(afterhalving),anddealsanadditionalpointofdamagetotheattacker.
Relationships
Relationshipsareyouremotionalandsocialbondstopeoplearoundyou.Foramagicalgirl
maintainingrelationshipswithnormalpeoplecanbedifficult,butit'snecessaryinordertomaintainsome
semblanceofhumanityandsanity.
Youget7pointstodistributebetweenhowevermanyrelationshipsyouwish,thoughitis
recommendedthatyouhaveatleastoneortworelationshipsaboveonepoint.Relationshipsrangefrom
zeropoints(someoneyoudonothavearelationshipwith),tofourpoints(someonewhoisincredibly
importanttoyou).Youmaynotput4pointsinarelationshiporotherwiseincreasearelationshipto4points
withoutpriorGMapproval.
Foreachrelationship,selectoneofthethreeattributes(Magic,Heart,orFury)torepresentthe
natureofyourconnection.Heartrelationshipscomefromproperhumanfeelings,Magicrelationshipscome
fromcommoninvolvementintheworldofthemagical,andFuryrelationshipsrepresentrivalriesor
camaraderiethatarisefrombattle.Youshouldalsowriteabriefnoteaboutthenatureofyourrelationship,
whetheryouarelovers,rivals,friends,relatives,classmates,etc.
TheGMcouldintroducenonplayermagicalgirlcharactersatthisstage,butdoesnthavetoreveal
themassuch.Also,youcannotformarelationshipwithatsukaimatheysimplydon'thavetheemotional
capacity.
MagicalGirlsmayhaverelationshipswithotherMagicalGirls,buttheyaretreatedasentirely
separateentitiesforallpurposes,anddonotneedtobemutual.
Ifyouwanttoinvolveafairlyhomogenousandcohesivegroupofpeople(say,thetennisclubora
gangofkidsfromtheneighborhood),youcanrepresentthemasasinglecharacterforthe
purposesofrelationships,althoughthisrequiresGMPermission.
Allrelationships(asthingsyouwritedownonyourcharactersheet)areultimatelypositiveonsome
level,somethingyourmagicalgirlwouldmissifitwasgone.Furyrelationshipsarealittletricky,but
ifyouhavearelationshipwithsomeoneitmeansyougetsomethingpositiveoutofit.Ifyouwant
yourmagicalgirltobeanoutrightenemywithsomeone,donthavearelationshipwiththem.
Youmaynothavemultiplerelationshipswiththesameperson.
GeneralMechanics
Transforming
MagicalGirlshavetwoforms:normalandmagicalgirl.Intheirnormalformtheyaremoreorless
normalgirls,theonlyunusualthingbeingthattheyhaveaspecialpendantthatcanneverbestolen,lost,or
evendiscarded.Whenamagicalgirltransformsshemayexperienceanelaboratetransformationsequence
ofhercostumeformingaroundherbody,buttotheoutsideworldthetransformationisvirtually
instantaneous.If,forexample,ayoumalaunchesanattackatamagicalgirlinhernormalform,shecan
transformintimetoreacttoeventhefastestofattacks.Transformingisnecessarybecauseamagicalgirl
cannotaccessanyofhermagicalabilitiesotherwise.
Ifyouareat0Resolveyouloseaccesstoyourmagicalgirlformandallyourmagicalpowersuntil
youusetheReviveactionorthecurrentsceneends.
NormalChallenges
Foramundanechallenge,theplayerrolls2d6andaddsittoanappropriateNormalAttribute,
comparingtheresultwiththeTNofwhatevertheyretryingtoaccomplish.
MagicalChallenges
Foramagicalchallenge,youuseoneofthethreeMagicalAttributes:Roll2d6andaddtherollto
yourattributetogettheresult.Inaddition,youhavetheoptionofvoluntarilytakingOverchargetogetextra
dice.AddapointofOverchargetotheattributeyouareusingforthechallenge,androllanadditional1d6,
addingittothetotal.Youcandothisbeforeorafteryourroll,thoughifyourefacingamagicalopponent
theycandothesameyoucanbothtaketurnsaddingOverchargetoyourrolltotrytobeattheothers
result.Nomatterwhat,youmaynotgainmorethanthreeadditionaldiceonanyMagicalChallengedueto
voluntarilytakingOverchargeorusingrelatedabilities(EnergyStorage,FinalStrike,etc).Abilitiesthat
modifyachallengeinsomewaybutdonotdirectlyaddOverchargedicedonotaffectthislimit.
Unlikewithnormalchallenges,ifadiecomesupa6(oneitheroneoftheoriginal2d6orona
voluntaryoverchargedie),youtakeinvoluntaryoverchargedice,whichactsimilarlytovoluntaryovercharge
dice,withtwoexceptions:theydonotcountagainstthelimitofthreevoluntaryoverchargediceper
challenge,andtheycannotexplodefurther(rollinga6onaninvoluntaryoverchargediehasnoadditional
effects.)
Ifthemagicalchallengeisanattack,youdealanadditionalpointofdamageforeachOvercharge

TargetNumbers&Raises
ATargetNumber(TN)isthenumberyoumustmeetorexceedtosucceedonaspecificchallenge.
Forexample,tosucceedonaCoverchallenge(TN14),youmustrollatleasta14,afterallmodifiershave
beenapplied.
Araiseisamechanicusedinchallengesandspecificactions,whereinyougainextrabenefitsfor
exceedingtheTN.Every3pointsyouexceedtheTNbyequalsoneraise.Forexample,someonewhogota
17onaCoverchallengewouldhaveoneraise,andsomeonewhogota20wouldhavetworaises.Raises
mayalsohappeninopposedchallenges,inwhichcaseyoumustbeattheenemysrollby3pointsasifit
weretheTN.
OpposedandUnopposedChallenges
Anopposedchallengeiswhentherulescallfortwocharacterstomakerollsagainsteachother.
Forexample,youmightmakeaPhysicalvs.Finessechallenge,meaningyoumakeaPhysicalchallenge
andtheotherpersonmakesaFinessechallenge,andwhoevergetsthehigherresultwins.Breaktiesfirst
bywhoeverhasthehigherbaseattribute,thenbyrollinganextradie.
Inanunopposedchallengeyourejustmakingachallengeandseeingifyougotahighenough
resulttobeattheTN.Actionsthatuseanunopposedchallengewilllistoffwhateffectyougetfromsuccess,
andanyadditionaleffectsfromraises.Typicallyfailuremeansnothinghappens.
Luck
EveryMagicalGirlstartswithonetotwopointsofLuck(asdeterminedbytheGM),whichisa
resourcethatmaybespenttoenhanceNormalChallengesitrepresentsthatparticulargirlsluck,destiny,
unwillingnesstogiveup,orwhateverelseisappropriate.ApointofLuckmaybespenttorerollaNormal
Challenge,orgaina+2bonustoaNormalChallenge(whichmaybeperformedbeforeorafterseeingthe
result,inthesamemannerasspendingoverchargetoenhancemagicalchallenges.)Luckrefreshesatthe
startofeachsession.
ANoteforGMs
Inmanyothergames,itisacommonpracticetorolldiceoutofsightoftheplayers,sotheycannot
seetheresult.Whilethismethoddoeshaveitsadvantages(anddisadvantages),itisnotrecommendedfor
MagicalBurst.Theplayersneedtoknowexactlywhatresulttheenemyhas,sotheycandecideifthey
wishtoriskspendingOvercharge(orLuck)tobeatit.
NonCombatActions
Thefollowingareactionsperformedoutsideofcombat,butwhichrequireexplicitrulesforone
reasonoranother.
Awareness
Occasionally,theGMwillcallforAwarenesschallengestonoticesomethinghappeninginthe
nearbyarea.ThisisaFinessechallenge,withaTNassetbytheGM.1214isrecommendedtonotice
mosthiddenthings,15+forthingsthataresupposedtobeverywellhiddenandunlikelytobefound.
Awarenesschallengesshouldbeusedsparingly,otherwiseFinessehasatendencytorapidlybecomefar
moreimportantthantheotherstats.
ReadaPerson
ThesocialversionofAwareness.Thisisusedtofigureoutthingsaboutotherpeopleinmuchthe
samewasasAwarenessisusedtodetectthingsinthenearbyarea.ThisisaSocialchallenge,withaTN
assetbytheGM(typicallyTN12,althoughhighermaybewarrantedforsmall,hardtonoticedetails).This
isnotmindreading,butallowsyourcharactertoreadthebodylanguage,toneofvoice,andotheractionsof
acharacter,andmakereasonabledeductionsbasedonit.Youmayalsousethisactionifyoususpect
someoneislyingtoyou,inwhichcaseitcomesdowntoasimpleopposedchallenge.Onasuccess,you
getafeelforhowtruthfultheyrebeing.Onafailure,yougainnofurtherinformation.
Bond
Ifyouhaveasignificantpositivesocialinteractionwithsomeone,makeaTN12Socialchallenge.On
asuccess,increaseyourrelationshipwiththembyonepoint.Onasuccesswithatleastoneraise,
increaseyourrelationshipwiththembytwopoints.Asalways,increasingarelationshipto4pointsrequires
GMpermission.Ifyousucceed,youcanchangetherelationshipsattribute,thoughyoudonthaveto.GMs
arehighlyencouragedtoregulateuseofthiscookingsomeoneamealisnotasufficientjustificationfora
