LESSON PLAN TEMPLATE

Subject U.S. History: The Twenties: Prohibition Date: 11-13-2013



Lesson Goal: For this lesson, students will be examining the root causes of prohibition in the
United States. Students will be analyzing a brief video to construct an idea on the culture,
potency, as well as impacts of alcohol that lead to the eventual ban. Students will also be taking a
look at some issues that may be more relevant to them that deal with proposed regulations on
certain personal behavior.

Learning Objectives:
Analyze examples of government regulations on peoples behavior
Describe the deep-rooted tradition of alcohol in American culture and how this tradition
has costs and benefits

Ohio Academic Content Standards:
American History: Prosperity, Depression, and the New Deal (1919-1941): 19.
Movements such as the Harlem Renaissance, African-American migration, womens
suffrage and Prohibition all contributed to social change.

Anticipatory Set:
Discuss what role students think government should play in their lives
Discuss whether personal behavior should be regulated by the government

Materials:
Student Handout: Proposed Laws Regulating Personal Behavior
Student Handout: Roots of Prohibition Video Viewing Guide

Activities:
Activity One- Anticipatory Set: As a class, discuss what students believe should be the
role of government in their lives. Ask whether or not they believe the government should
be in the business of regulating personal behavior. (5-10 minutes)
Activity Two- Place students in groups and pass out the Student Handout: Proposed Laws
Regulating Personal Behavior. Have students complete this handout cooperatively.
Monitor group progress and answer any questions students may have. After all groups
have finished begin a class discussion about their results. (15-20 minutes)
Activity Three- After the class discussion, pass out the Student Handout: Roots of
Prohibition Video Viewing Guide and have students view the Nation of Drunkards
video. After the video, review the handout as a class and answer any questions students
may have missed. (15-20 minutes)

Accommodations for Special Learners:
Blended groups of students with different learner levels
Monitoring of groups to help out any students who may be having difficulty
