ASSIGNMENT NO.1
Review Questions:
1. Information technology (IT) it is the combination of hardware, software, and services
that people use to manage, communicate, and share information. IT is a very important
part of business because business success depends on information technology and it is
the one that drives a new digital economy, where advances in hardware, software, and
connectivity can provide enormous benefits to businesses and individuals. Information
technology also becomes a bridge for businesses to promote and enhance their
products and to make their business known around the globe.
2. > Business Profile an overview of a companys mission, functions, organization,
products, services, customers, suppliers, competitors, constraints, and future direction.
> Business Process - specific set of transactions, events, and results that can be
described and documented.
> Business Process Model (BPM) graphically displays one or more business
processes.
3. 5 Main Components of Information Technology:
A. Hardware everything in the physical layer of the information system such as
servers, workstations, networks, scanners and other devices.
B. Software these are the programs that control the hardware and produce the
desired information or results. Software consist of system software and application
software.
C. Data the raw material that an information system transforms into useful
information.
D. Processes these are the one that describe the tasks and business functions
that users, mangers, and IT staff members perform to achieve specific results. It is the
building blocks of an information system because they represent actual day-to-day
business operations.
E. People they are the persons who are interested in an information system
which are called stakeholders.

Systems Stakeholder they have interest in information system. Stakeholders include
the management group responsible for the system, the users also called end users
inside and outside the company who will interact with the system, and IT staff members,
such as systems analysts, programmers, and network administrators who develop and
support the system.

APPLY YOUR KNOWLEDGE
1. 1) YES, because TX Industries is our largest customer and we should keep track
of their purchases and their new purchasing system enable us to connect to them and
we will be able to receive their purchase orders electronically which means that we can
immediately response to their orders. We should develop a system that will enable Low-
Voltage Components to connect to TX industries purchasing system to immediately
perform an action to their orders and because our current accounting system is not
capable of handling EDI.
2) The concepts that describe the proposed computer-to-computer relationship
between Low-voltage and TX Industries is Business-to-Business (B2B) because it is a
electronic commerce between two companies used a data sharing arrangement.
3) YES, because Transaction processing systems is a process data generated
by day-to-day business operations. TX Industries is Low-Voltages largest customers
and because of that the proposed new system is a TP system because it involves
customer order processing.
4) NO, because Low-Voltage Component is medium-sized firm that is why they
dont need to use ERP systems. ERP system is suitable for large company for their
cost-effect support and for cost reduction.

2. 1) Systems analysts figure out how to use computers to get things done. They
tell businesses and other organizations which computers and software to buy, and they
decide how to get those tools to work together. Their work start by asking people what
they need their computers to do. Then, they plan a computer system that can do those
tasks well. A System Analyst must be big-picture oriented and have a clear
understanding of how the components within a computer systemhardware, software,
and networks work together. They're charged with analyzing that interaction and making
recommendations that will ultimately help a company or organization operate more
efficiently.
2) The Labor Department reports that system analysts made a median salary of
$78,770 in 2011. The highest-paid in the profession earned $120,060, while the lowest-
paid earned $49,370.
Salary Range

75th Percentile $98,490
Median $78,770
25th Percentile $62,260

3. 1) The four organizational levels in a typical company as follows:
I. Top managers develop long-range plans, called strategic plans, which
define the companys overall mission and goals.

II. Middle Managers and Knowledge Workers. Middle Managers are the
one that provide direction, necessary resources, and performance
feedback to supervisors and team leaders while Knowledge workers provide
support for the organizations basic functions.

III. Supervisors, often called team leaders, oversee operational employees
and carry out day-to-day functions. They coordinate operational tasks
and people, make necessary decisions, and ensure that the right tools,
materials, and training are available.

IV. Operational employees include users who rely on TP systems to
enter and receive data they need to perform their jobs.
2) Companies will fall into either product based or sales based. Product based
are companies that make and sell their goods to the market. Services based are
businesses that sell their services to their customers like laundry services.
3) Empowerment gives employees more responsibility and accountability. Many
companies find that empowerment improves employee motivation and increases
customer satisfaction. It is way to improve the performance of a company.
Empowerment is commonly executed to operational employees to give them motivation
and to increase customer satisfaction.
4) The types of information system a large company might use are enterprise
computing systems, transaction processing systems, business support systems,
knowledge management systems, and user productivity systems.

4. 1) Structured Analysis uses a series of phases, called the systems development
life cycle (SDLC), to plan, analyze, design, implement, and support an information
system and treats processes and data as separate components while Object-Oriented
analysis combines data and the processes that act on the data into things called objects
and Agile Method use a spiral model, which represents a series of iterations, or revisions,
based on user feedback.
2) CASE tools stand for Computer-aided systems engineering or also
called computer-aided software engineering, provide an overall framework for
systems development and support a wide variety of design methodologies, including
structured analysis and object-oriented analysis. It makes easier to build an
information system, they boost IT productivity and improve the quality of the finished
product.
3) Business process model (BPM) graphically displays one or more business
processes, such as handling an airline reservation, filling a product order, or updating a
customer account. It is done by using computer-based modelling tools that use a standard
language called business process modelling notation (BPMN) which includes various
shapes and symbols to represent events, processes, and workflows,
4) Prototyping tests system concepts and provides an opportunity to examine
input, output, and user interfaces before final decisions are made. It is important because it
serve as an initial model that is used as a benchmark to evaluate the finished system, or
the prototype itself can develop into the final version of the system and it can also speeds
up the development process significantly.
