Dealing Down
Introduction: My partner Stephanie and I, played a game called Dealing Down! We
dealt "our card# "rom our card dec$ and we u#ed tho#e % num&er# to "ind the lowe#t #core
we could po##i&ly get' We can u#e any $ind o" operation and num&er# e(cept negati)e
num&er# or "raction# a# e(ponent#' *ere are the #ome o" the "ollowing re#ult#/an#wer#
we "ound while playing the game''''
Some rule# "or adding integer# i# a po#iti)e adding another po#iti)e will alway#
gi)e you a po#iti)e an#wer' I" you add a negati)e with another negati)e, you will alway#
get another negati)e' I" you add a negati)e with a po#iti)e, depending on which num&er
i# &igger you will get a po#iti)e, +ero or negati)e ,"or e(ample:-% . / 0 .11 2hi# i#
&ecau#e the num&er / i# &igger in general' 3ou are &a#ically #u&tracting &oth o" the
num&er# ,the po#iti)e #u&tract the negati)e num&er1' Some #u&tracting rule# are a
negati)e #u&tract a po#iti)e will alway# gi)e you a negati)e and a po#iti)e #u&tract a
negati)e i# alway# a po#iti)e &ecau#e two negati)e# together ma$e a po#iti)e' ,e(: 4 - ,-/1
0 1%1 5inally, a negati)e #u&tract another negati)e will either gi)e you a po#iti)e,
negati)e or +ero &ecau#e you u#e the #ign o" the larger num&er and you #u&tract' 5or
e(ample: -%--%00' I" you u#e the #ame num&er in the e6uation it will &e a +ero' 7hange
dou&le negati)e# to a po#iti)e' Some rule# "or multiplying integer# i# a po#iti)e num&er
multiplied &y a po#iti)e will get you a po#iti)e and a negati)e multiplied &y a negati)e i#
a po#iti)e' 8l#o, a negati)e multiplied &y a po#iti)e will gi)e you a negati)e product'
Some rule# "or di)iding num&er# i# a po#iti)e di)ided &y a po#iti)e will alway# gi)e you
a po#iti)e and a negati)e di)ided &y a negati)e will alway# gi)e you a po#iti)e'
5urthermore, a negati)e di)iding a po#iti)e will alway# gi)e you a negati)e and a po#iti)e
di)ided &y a negati)e will alway# gi)e you a negati)e'
2he rea#on why 9rder o" 9peration# e(i#t i# &ecau#e the whole world would ha)e
di""erent an#wer# "or the #ame e(pre##ion! 5or e(ample: 14-4 ( 2 - ,1 ( 21 I" you didn:t
do order o" operation#, you would ha)e di""erent an#wer#' I" you did order o" operation#
you #hould ha)e gotten -1 &ecau#e you do parenthe#e# "ir#t, e(ponent, multiplication or
di)i#ion depending on which come# "ir#t "rom le"t to right' 2hen you do addition or
#u&traction whiche)er come# "ir#t a# well' So "or the pro&lem you do whate)er i# in the
parenthe#e# "ir#t, which i# 1 ( 2' 9ne time# two i# two #o now the e6uation #hould &e 14 -
4 ( 2 - 2' 2hen we do multiplication which i# 4 ( 2 and that e6ual# 1;' 8"ter that the
e6uation #hould &e 14 - 1; - 2' 2hen you do the #u&traction "rom whate)er order it i# in'
14 - 1; i# "ir#t and that e6ual# 1! 5inally, 1-2 i#''''-1! So our an#wer #hould &e -1'
*owe)er, i" you didn:t do the order o" operation, you could ha)e gotten ;! Without 9rder
o" 9peration# the whole world wouldn:t $now who wa# right and they would:)e gotten
many di""erent an#wer#' <uc$ily, we ha)e the 9rder o" 9peration# and they help u#
decide who i# right or wrong!
7ommunicati)e =roperty o" 8ddition and Multiplication i# a property o" whole
num&er# that can &e #witched around to ma$e a di""erent e6uation, &ut #till ha)e the #ame
an#wer' ,5or e(ample: ; ( 2 0 2 ( ;1 It #till gi)e# you the #ame an#wer which i# 1> in the
e(ample pro)ided' 2hi# i# u#e"ul "or adding and multiplying integer# &ecau#e you can add
the addend# o" an addition pro&lem or multiply "actor# o" a multiplication pro&lem
without worrying a&out a di""erent an#wer' 3ou can u#e them in any order ,&ut you ha)e
the #ame product or #um'
Di#tri&uti)e property o" multiplication o)er addition and #u&traction i# when you
are multiplying a num&er in a parenthe#e# or when you are di#tri&uting a num&er 6to one
#ide' 5or e(ample: 2 ,2 ( %1 I would do 2 ( 2 "ir#t which i# % and then 2 ( % would &e ;'
2hen you add ; . % together which would gi)e you 12' It help# u# &ecau#e it gi)e# u#
another way o" doing the#e e6uation#'8n e(panded "orm o" thi# would &e 2 ( 2 . 2 ( %

What I learned "rom playing the game i# that you can actually ma$e many
#olution# with ?u#t "our num&er#! 2hat:# )ery impre##i)e and I didn:t $now with u#ing
many di""erent operation# and negati)e or po#iti)e integer# you can ma$e a )ery low
num&er you didn:t e)en e(pect! It i# )ery #urpri#ing and I en?oyed playing Dealing Down'
It helped me learn that num&er# are ama+ing and you can get great num&er# and low
num&er# with only "our num&er#' What I learned "rom writing the report i# that we can
e(plain our#el)e# clearly in#tead o" u#ing num&er# only' I al#o learned that there are
many di""erent way# o" #ol)ing one pro&lem' 3ou can u#e Di#tri&uti)e =roperty
7ommunicati)e =roperty and many more! Math doe#n:t ha)e ?u#t one way, &ut many
way#' 9)erall, I en?oyed doing thi# pro?ect, it wa# a great way o" u# learning how
num&er# really wor$ and it# #olution#'
